because everyone knows that the core was a horrible deal compared to the premium. And maybe sometime in the future the Hard Drive will become standard for developers so they can do what they need to do. (Since Rockstar was complaining about the lack of hard drive)
I've been thinking the exact same thing since they announced the 60Gb firesale. "Sony is getting bashed for discontinuing their low end model, but we all know Microsoft will be praised when they discontinue their low end model."

360 Core = Wired controller and no HDD
PS3 20+60 gig = everything the 80 GB has just cheaper and easier to buy hence the disappointment of it being discontinued.
Not my responce, If true discontinuing the core is a mistake, it would have hit the magic $199 price point pretty soon.Response: "SONY IS TEH STUPID!"

1. 20 Gig PS3 was a better deal at $499 for mainstream.
2. 60 Gig PS3 was a better deal with price drop for mainstream.
^^^ Sony Cancelled both.
3. Core was a bad deal at $299 with no hdd for mainstream.
Plus now the premium will be $349 (Look at Gamespot front page).
360 actually has a pricedrop and Sony had a fake price drop for a month/two. That should sum it all up.
There's a huge difference here. Getting rid of the 60 gig sku doesn't make sense, since the $499 price point is working better than the old $599 one did (and the 80 gig sku is going to be $599 again). I personally equate the 20 gig PS3 to the Core 360 (although functionally the PS3 is obviously much better), because no one wanted to buy either of them. So in that sense, it's good that they're both gone. However, I still don't think Sony should get rid of the 60 gig sku;I just ordered one at a discount off a Best Buy employee auctionspecifically because I'd rather have this 60 gig version at a discount than an 80 gig with a game I don't want, and inferior backwards compatibility for $100 more.SeanBond
And you think Sony won't drop the price of the 80gb? You just said it yourself, the 499$ pricepoint is selling more consoles - do you really think they won't drop it in price? Please.

What inferior backwards compatibility?
The 80 gig PS3 uses software emulation, like the European PS3.
American PS3s also started using software emulation since European launch (Update 1.40 disabled that emotion chip or whatever it's called and switched to emulation) ......

No one's saying they won't drop the price at some point, but they'll have to do it quickly for it to have the effect they want it to. Otherwise, getting rid of the 60 gig is still a bad idea.

They are gonna drop the price. Sony might do stupid things but after all the recent praise, why would they do something so stupid as to raise the price back up to $600 and keept it there?

chance is that the 80 gig by its self not the bundle will go down to 499.

Based off what anouncement? Sorry that won't happen if it were true they would waited to phase out the 60BG and then released the 80GB.I've been thinking the exact same thing since they announced the 60Gb firesale. Not-A-Stalker
The 60gb is still a worthwhile model, hardly low end, and in fact is in a way superior to all future PS3 in that it doesn't have crippled backwards compatibility (which was a big factor to me with a bag of 35 PS2 games sitting around since my PS2 broke). The 360 core model was crap from day one.

Lets see...
PS3
4 months after release, lets discontinued 20gb ps3 because we don't think anybody wants it. When in reality sony's main reason to discontinue it was because they lost more on the 20gb than the 60 gb.
8 months after release, lets discontinued 60gb because we want our consumers to have a better value in the 80gb. When in reality sony's main reason to discontinue it was to remove the Emotion Chip in order to cut cost and screw their future customer of a full backward compatibility. Isn't backward compatibility one of the main reasons why cows were willing to buy the ps3???
Xbox 360
21 months later, Microsoft stills continue to support the core but in reality the core isn't doing any good.
In conclusion, Sony just wants to cut lost on the ps3 and they don't care about their future consumers while MS has been fully supportive of the core since launch.
Go figure...

Over 80% of PS1/PS2 games work on the PS3 through emulation. Try worrying about the 360's BC instead.

Is it true that a software update on PS3 from a while back disabled the emotion chips and made it so that all PS3's used software emulation?
Completly diffrent situations,
The Core is a waste of money, and a pain in the ass of every developer
While The 20 and 60 gigs Ps3s were a good deal compared to the 80
The Core isnt going anywhere, it makes up for 20 % of sales.HeHateMe_basic
Wow. That made me laugh. If anyone buys a core, they then need to be shot.

For those of yoiu who wanted backward capability on the 80GB model, there is none. No reason for me to get one now.
Fortunately, I haven't ruled out getting a PS2mike7677

How long did 40GB last after the production stopped? The 60GB will not last over a month especially if sales are good. Plus they are not going to put the 80GB at $499 especially if they could of said that at E3 and had a bigger anouncement/hype.Please Log In to post.
