LONDON - The long-awaited UK launch of Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) games console has been marred by the cancellation of more than £10m worth of orders from retailers and consumers.

Retail industry sources claim the electronics giant has had as many as 20,000 pre-orders of the £425 console cancelled in the run-up to its delayed launch last Friday.

There have been none of the stock shortages typical of earlier console launches and the majority of the cancelled pre-orders are believed to have come from speculators hoping to sell the units on eBay for a profit.

Virgin Megastores claims to have ordered significantly more PS3 consoles than rival Nintendo Wiis or Xbox 360s, both of which sold out within 48 hours of hitting the shops before Christmas. However, it has sold only two-thirds of the several thousand PS3s available in its UK stores.

We're not as stupid as you think here in Europe. I got a PS3 on Friday, but I don't actually know anyone else who did

Well, I can understand why. 425 pounds is like $850, which is not really a good deal for a console with only a handful of good games.

Hey, geniuses.... IT'S STILL THE BIGGEST HOME CONSOLE LAUNCH IN UK HISTORY. I'm sure thousands of pre-orders got canceled for both the Wii and 360, too.

Somehow I doubt it, Wiis and 360s were picked up, at least where I come from.

No, it's IN ADDITION to the preorders. In other words, if these preorders hadn't been canceled, 185,000 instead of 165,000 would've been sold on launch day. And even if you're right and 20,000 preorders of those 165,000 sold at launch were canceled, that would still leave the PS3 with 145,000, and that's STILL the biggest home console launch in UK history, 40,000 more than the Wii at 105,000. SO put this in perspective.

but i understand your exuberance to jump on any good news (rumor or not) about the ps3... it needs all the hype it can get after getting it's teeth kicked in by the xbox360...;)

MCV reported the sales data, not Sony. 165,000 were sold to consumers, with some left over on store shelves.

As was the Gamecube when it launched. And the PSP was the fastest selling handheld. We all know they both killed their competition in sales- Oh wait...

I highly doubt that. People would just put the console on Ebay and double their money

Why don't you find me credible? Simply because I'm defending the PS3 for once in my entire tenure here at System Wars? Read ANY of my past posts, and you'll find that I'm nothing if not a shemming. But reality is reality, and the PS3 broke sales records in the UK. AFAIK it's the only place where they broke sales records set by the Wii, but other countries haven't reported their sales data yet. Fanboys.

You don't think I realize all that? That doesn't change the fact that the PS3 STILL had the biggest console launch in UK history. That is just plain, empirical fact that cannot be denied. How the PS3 will fare in the future, however, remains pure speculation.

Over one-hundred and fifty thousand British folks parted with a chunk of cash to make kissy face with the PS3. Actually, it was 165,00 but who's counting... Sony is! The PLAYSTATION 3 UK was apparently a smashing success, outselling the Wii and the PS3. Apparently, it could've been more, way more.

No, in this case, this is most DEFINITELY lemming damage control. The PS3 had a successful launch in the UK, despite Microsoft's FUD tactics over the past year. Get over it.

No, for a number of reasons. The most expensive console has NEVER won a gen, that's just one of the reasons.

SO put this in perspective.

sorry, but i hardly find you credible..

even tho, it still doesn't help the ps3 from sitting at a 10 million console deficit....

ps... i doubt the validity of the joystiq numbers... too soon to know for certain about the actual ps3 sales...

but i understand your exuberance to jump on any good news (rumor or not) about the ps3... it needs all the hype it can get after getting it's teeth kicked in by the xbox360...;)

10 million console deficit? You need to brush up on your reading comprehension before you start questioning other poster's credibility.

if it makes you feel better... how 9 million grab ya?

It doesn't make me "feel" one way or another. I happily own both consoles and would never be so childish as to attach emotion to a piece of machinery.

I have a friend in the UK who was thinking about pre-ordering a PS3 to resell it on eBay for a profit, but luckily I talked him out of it and it's paid off for him.  He would've lost money.

I think that kind of thing has something to do with this.

Yet further evidence, in my mind, that the PS3 sales will drop quickly in the UK. Did it sell well? Yes. But stuff like this makes me think that almost all, if not all, the short term demand has been satisfied. Which means sales go down. Just like in Japan. Just like in the US.

This is what Xbox fanboys do instead of playing games... they scour the internet looking for any bad news that has the word "Sony" or "Blu-Ray" in the topic.

Bad news fanboys...

PS3 breaks UK console records

Feel free to cry about it, but it still stands. :)

it's more pathetic you search the internet for ANY good news about the ps3, whether it's verifiable or not...

If by "search the internet", you mean "look on the front page of gamespot".

Sorry, HD... you've got the market on pathos cornered.

i'm sure you got on the internet to find gamespot, correct?

face it; the ps3 is failing in all areas you SWORE they'd succeed at...

it must hurt....

...wait, it gets worse....
