BSO's Picks for Awesome Sleeper Titles of 2009:

Stoked: Big Air Edition

Stoked: Big Air Edition Boxshot

Take the solid foundation of the original game and polish it off to near snowboarding perfection. If you're a fan of the Amped titles (specifically 1 & 2), then Stoked: Big Air Edition is a must have game. New physics. Racing events. 2 new and huge mountains including K2 (7 in total). New visual effects. Groomed trails. Park objects. And better carving. This is Stoked making a statement.

-

Call of Juarez: Bound In Blood

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood Boxshot

Call of Juarez: Bound In Blood is the sequel to the sleeper known as Call of Juarez. Bound In Blood, however, is a vastly superior game with polished gameplay and visual presentation. The story is also a lot stronger here, as are the characters.

-

Sacred 2: Fallen Angel on consoles

Sacred 2: Fallen Angel Boxshot

After playing Sacred 2 on PC in 2008, I expected the console port to be pretty poor, but the whole thing worked well and looked damn good to boot. This is a fun and addictive adventure, but be warned that you won't give a **** about the story or its characters.

-

Torchlight

Torchlight Boxshot

Torchlight is a Diablo clone. Let's just get the elephant out of the room. However, it's allowed to be, as Torchlight was developed by a bunch of ex-Diablo devs. It takes the addictive loot ***** collecting from the game's it inspires to be, and it does it all oh so beautifully. Give this cheap $20 game a download, you won't regret it.

-

Risen

Risen Boxshot

Risen is basically Gothic 3 in a new setting, but don't let that scare you away. Piranha Bytes did a much better job with Risen. Nothing is broken, most of it is at least polished to the extent that it functions properly, the gameplay is fun and challenging, the atmosphere is immersive and beautiful, and the story/characters are very solid. There's even some great work here by Andy Serkis and others.

-

I have a bunch more, but these are the ones I will mention for now.

Rune Factory Frontier (Wii)

So sleeper-ish, Gamespot didn't even review it (despite the fact it's one of the best Wii games this year). I'm sure everyone is at least somewhat familiar with Harvest Moon, well this game is the best Harvest Moon game in ages. And not enough deep, content filled games on the Wii? I'm 40 hours or so in and I'm only about half way through the first year.

I've not yet played it, but I'd say that Afrika looks like a quirky little niche title that might be interesting enough.

Gravity Crash- A PSN title released last week. It is in the esence an old school shooter where you are a ship navigating through different space and underwater levels. The campaign takes you through multiple solar sytems and planets. Also the icing on top of the cake is the map editor that the game comes with, allowing you to make your own maps, post them online, and allow others to download it, so it follows the play, create, and share trend of lbp. Its a great game, one of my favorite PSN titles to date, but next week pixel junk shooter comes out which is a similar title, but a bit more innovative, we'll see which is better.

Bionic Commando. Is it a superb game? no, but is it a fun romp? Hell Yes. Just bought a week ago, and I've had a complete blast playing through the story. Things especially ramp up toward the end. Easily a 7.5 game in my book.

I'm pretty sure that The Saboteus isn't exactly a sleeper game. I don't know how it will sell, but there's enough hype surrounding it that it's not quite a sleeper.

Shadow Complex ~ I wasn't expecting the successor to Super Metroid to come out at any point, let alone be just as awesome as Super Metroid... and improve on many things.

Agree with Sacred 2. I pumped about 300 hours total into the PS3 version, I just wish I'd discovered how much fun the Dryad was much earlier. The only thing that pissed me off were the connection issues and lag I had with it. I stopped playing after I got the platinum Trophy but talking about it now makes me want to play it again. I think I'll jump back in tomorrow.

Considering the massive hype and subsequent flop, I don't see how that was a "sleeper" game.

What hype? The unreal hype HERE? If we're talking here, then yes, its no sleeper hit. If we're talking the real world then it was indeed a sleeper. I know alot of DS gamer and very few even heard of Scribblenauts befor the commercials.

Batman Arkham Asylum or Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood. Or even 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand, it was a surprisingly decent game, if just mindless fun.

Absolutely agree on Bound in Blood. Its a vastly unappreciated game, and the PC visuals are suprisingly well done.

Edit: My sleeper hit of the year is Arma 2. Not many played it, and even fewer liked it, but for those of us into the genre, it was simply amazing. I've put far more time into it than any other game this year.

Definetly Batman: AA. I never even considered buying the game around the beginning of the year. Then i started hearing great things about it. And I just had to pick it up. And i loved it. Couldnt believe that a licensed game could be so amazing.

Aside from map layout and exploration? What else is there to resemble a side scrolling metroid game? Those are the two biggest staples of the series. You put Alucard and supernatural/paranormal enemies in place of the Orson Scott Card world and characters, you would have a Castlevania game. Not quite sure I understand where you are going. And Shadow Complex being better is certainly your opinion, but I have to disagree. Only thing i found it to be better at was its technical prowess (i would expect nothing less from a game that released over 15 years later)
