Shovel Knight is amazing and since Rayman Legends, i think is the only 2D platform ive played...still missing Tropical Freeze :-(
From Gen 8?
Rayman Legends is good, even great, but waaaay behind Origins.
Tearaway is phenomenal. Best of 2013.
Guacamelee is alright. It has some tough parts that are fun to overcome.
Spelunky is last gen, but on Vita it's a joy to play.
I don't enjoy 3D Land and World, but they exist.
Fez is another last gen one I loved on Vita.
Rogue Legacy bitches. I highly recommend it for the customization aspects of platforming alone.
Stealth Clone is basically Mario platforming with puzzles and is a fantastic game.
For current generation it's Donkey Kong Country Tropical freeze and it's not even close. I've never touched a platformer before with this level of quality craftsmanship and attention to detail. As a massive fan of the genre, I can say with confidence that DKCTF is the greatest platformer ever created. My opinion of course
Last generation it was Donkey Kong Country returns. Retro Studios apparently understands this genre better than anybody else right now.
However I must give a great deal of praise to Guacamelee, the New Rayman games, and Super Meat Boy.
Azure Striker Gunvolt... that's all I got. Gen 8 isn't a good era for this genre so far, but hopefully Mighty No. 9 delivers when it comes out.
Oh yeah, I forgot about the new Strider. It's alright, but it's still nowhere near as fun as Strider 2.
@FinalFighters: <------ this guy... Nailed it.
To be fair, Ducktales doesn't go as far with its ideas as the best modern day 2d sidescroller, but it was a nice walk through a proof positive example of a 25 year old game that still holds up... Awesome walk through memory lane.
Rogue Legacy
Gianna Sisters was such a nice treat... Beautifully polished and that fast paced "puzzlish" switch back gameplay was so fun. I also dug it's twisted art.
Rogue Legacy
Twisted... Which reminds me.... Dishwasher Vampire Smile. Really great. A little frantic at times and my fingers actually ached playing that game, but solid gameplay that's hard to walk away from.
Rogue Legacy
Oh... Muramasa Rebirth on vita. Hundreds of swords. Airtight gameplay... A fun way of unleashing special attacks and thus creating strategy and encouraging you to swicth between swords. Cool bosses for the genre and great pacing. Two campaigns with two characters... Best looking vita game on the handheld.
Rogue Legacy
So many nice memories playing the Rayman game with my kids... Gorgeous game. Super perfect platforming.
Rogue effing Legacy
Battleblock Theater had such godly music... Amazing coop platforming... So criminally underappreciated. A game you guys pay with a permanent smile on your face
Rogue Legacy... You will play it now.
Shadow Complex was another 2d metroidvania type game that impressed through and through....
Ya know I'm realizing this may be my favorite genre...
There no mention for shantae and the pirates curse in here? for shame
I thought guacamelee and rayman legends were incredible. Those are the only two i completed this gen. Shovel knight is great too, i need to finish it
Hmm, all I can remember playing off the top of my head is Shovel Knight, NSMBU and just a bit of DKCTF.
NSMBU is about as solid as you get, but ultimately soulless. I've just had my fill of these NSMB games. I tried starting up a new game on it a couple of weeks ago and got bored after a couple of levels. Those games just don't have the staying power of SMB3, SMW, SMW2, etc...
Haven't played DKCTF enough to give a good opinion.
Shovel Knight? Was instantly in love with that game from the title screen and it just got better and better all the way to the end. As a pure platformer it's nothing amazing by any means, but as a complete package it's one hell of an awesome game. Definitely my favorite for this gen so far.
Azure Striker Gunvolt... that's all I got. Gen 8 isn't a good era for this genre so far, but hopefully Mighty No. 9 delivers when it comes out.
Oh yeah, I forgot about the new Strider. It's alright, but it's still nowhere near as fun as Strider 2.
honestly strider is lame as hell, Why in the **** they thought this like side scrolling action game that was all about running around slicing dudes up where everyone gets killed quickly should have a metroidvania structure is beyond me. Stupidest part of that game, ruins the whole arcade action. Now Shovel Knight, that game is delightful. Need to get Azure Striker Gunvolt, I have the previous game. I'm iffy on Mighty No. 9, a lot of the gameplay footage for that game kind of sucks.
This thread is full of great games, but...I have to say it, Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze is the best of all of them.
Shovel Knight would easily be in the top three though!
Does that really count? I mean, it's a great game, but it was still a great game back when it was on the original Wii.
My favorites so far:
-Volgarr (brutal old-school difficulty, solid gameplay)
-Strider 2(great stylish game overall with great gameplay, fan of the original)
-Chariot(great puzzler alone or couch co-op)
-Unmechanical Extended(cool little puzzler with a robot drone whose only tool is a little tractor beam).
Honorable mentions:
-Giana Sisters Twisted Deams: Directors cut(puzzler, fantastic music, nice graphics and gameplay system)
-Never Alone(cool game that teaches you about another culture as you play...unique experience)
-Guacamelee(great overall 2D game with lots to do!!)
At the top of my current want list is Shovel Knight, but the only system I own this gen so far is the XOne, so I hope it eventually comes to it soon....day 1 purchase....also, on a side note, as a huge supporter of 2D games, I'm really happy to see the genre still kickin' today.
@Itzsfo0:
Just curious, how do you even go about finding a thread this old? Did you land here from a Google search string?
Not being shitty with you at all, genuinely curious about how these things happen lol.
