50 or so year ago TVs were in Black and White.

Now today we can't believe how people used to watch flims like that.

Now in about 50 years or less people will wonder how the people of today watched TVs in 2D.

2D is a thing of the past, just like black/white was.

I just hope it doesn't go as far as Virtual Gaming, because face it the amount of people dissatisfied with their life will all rely solely on that. And then we're basically living through Surrogates just this time no Bruce Willis lol.

Saying that 3d will make 2d a thing of the past is like saying that surround sound is superior to stereo.
"3D" is glorified parallax mapping and is still in a way, 2d.
Holograms will make 2d a thing of the past.

As long as I'm alive, I'll do my best to keep 2D the present. In my house-hold anyway. I watched a 3D movie in the 'IMAX Theatre' here in Sydney, Australia way back when I was 9 or 10. I didn't impress me then as an impressionable young kid, & it doesn't impress me now. Long live traditional controllers & 2D gaming.

You do know that was early 3D tech, right? Technology advances, smart one. Todays 3D is what the real goal for 3D was. Nintendo even admitted that Virtual Boy was released too early because the tech wasn't there.

Nvidia 3D, an example of 2010 3D Tech, since you if you didn't know technology advances.

Quotes: GameSpot

"Left 4 Dead played wonderfully in 3D. It is difficult to describe how much better the game looks without screenshots, but the extra depth gave an added sense of realism while we moved through the game, peering into subway trains and stumbling through forest environments. The first reactions from all of the GameSpot staffers that tried the system was generally something along the lines of, 'Whoa, this is cool!' followed shortly by 'How much does this cost?' We even caught one of our graphic designers pawing at the screen during his gameplay session."

Bjorn3D

"The NVIDIA 3D Vision system is the most revolutionary gaming equipment we've ever seen. Once you've tried it you'll have to have it. Once you have it you'll never give it up. Wives, Girlfriends, and family members will miss you." Tom's Hardware

Stereoscopic 3D was around waaaay before the virtual boy, the thing is that the virtual boy just plain sucked.

At the moment, the only good 3d tech is what's being implemented in the 3DS, but that's currently not being used in any large televisions these days.

Your black and white film comparison is quite an insult tbh, many films from that era have more substance, depth and character thanmost filmswe have today. You think being in colour instantly makes a film better?

In the same respect 3D in gaming is not going to make the games magically better. If anything it will make games worse. Much like CGI has for films.

The ability to use color in film has allowed for more creative use of light and shadow.
CGI has allowed there to be all sorts of insane imagery that isn't possible with other forms of animation.
Pixar films are completely CGI and are FANTASTIC.

It all depends on how the developers utilize the technology.

What are you talking about? No one with a brain wonders how they watched black & white movies. Hell, I watched 28 Days Later in black & white today and it was awesome.

This doesn't always equal better story, narrative, dialogue, emotion, substance or message.

Have you ever seen It's a wonderful life? The day the earth stood still? Citizen Kane? etc Being in colour and 3D would not make them better films, as they are masterpieces as it is.

If all of sudden the priority for games becomes 3D and fancy effects everything else will suffer, and in many games it already has.

But it can equal greater atmosphere, which certainly helps the story, and emotion.

2D will reduce but it will never truly die. Frankly I don't know why we don't see more 3D/2D hydrids. Also, 2D is way more accessible than 3D so I don't see it completel dying.

Seriously, I spent $2000 a long time ago to get LASIK when it was new just so I wouldn't have to wear glasses or contact lenses, and now I'm expected to wear glasses to watch TV and play video games? No way, man, no way.
