What are the 3 biggest tragedies in gaming to you?

mine would be:

1. When Sega decided to stop valuing unique gameplay and creativity above the impending focus on gimmicks and franchises.

2. When Nintendo decided to focus on the female, kids, casual gamers and older people market instead of delivering to their core fans, and as a result made more games that are gimmicky and shallow and made less games like SMG.

3. When Square Enix decided to start making tons of remakes and spin-offs.

These things have most likely directly reduced the amount of stellar games we could have gotten if they didn't make these deciscions.

What about you?

How is having three similar studios worse than one? :)

1 - Interplay shutting down

2 - Troika shutting down

3 - Iron Lore shutting down... although now they have a new company

PS3 not selling quite as well could actually turn out to be a good thing. It might make Sony a little less arrogant. If only MS could get some major repercussions for the faulty hardware...

Origin Systems Inc. and subsequently Looking Glass Studios closed down. Westwood Studios closed down. Bullfrog Studios closed down. Black Isle System closed down. Interplay closed down for the first time.

You're right. More competition and new franchises are always terrible for gaming.

I really think Sega is the biggest. I mean there are lots of great studios that closed and such, but Sega went from creating awesome consoles and 100% perfect, amazing games(Sonic, Shining Force, Streets of Rage, etc) to developing awful Sonic games and crappy minigames for the Wii...

1.The shuttering of Clover Studios, making it highly unlikely that we will ever see a sequel to Okami.

2.The fall of Sega

3.Gunpei Yokoi (hard to argue with a death.)

The secret is that there is no secret.

the serie's creator said various times that there is a secret. The monkey island series was supposed to be a trilogy, but the creator only worked on the first two

For those who said Nintendo going casual, who's fault is it for forcing them to go that route? Is it Nintendo after being abandoned by the core gamers or the core gamers themselves for abandoning Nintendo during the GC generation?

the closure of interplay. they were the instigators of the last golden age in gaming and their library and their devs would have made even nintendo quake in fear. their mear presence in the industry made other publishers step it up a few notches in terms of creativity and sheer ambition. though now closed (the old interplay)....their influence and their voice still echoes today. hopefully, one day, we will see another like them come in to kick some serious backside.

Where did the core gamers go when the PS1 took off? Where did they go when Halo was unveiled?

also, even if core gamers "abandoned" nintendo.... do you really think it was for no reason? PS1 had WAY WAY more games and it took away FF from nintendo.

is that the consumers fault?

and I'm not faulting nintendo for going after casuals myself, I'm faulting them for reducing thier support for hardcore gamers even though they are making much much much more money.

again, i ask what stopped them from opening more studios to make more games for the hardcore rather than less, compared to the GC era.

* EA purchasing Bioware and subsequently made Knights of the Old Republic into an MMO
* Nintendo, not so much as dropped the hardcore + mainstream support, but let it take a drastic slide
* Jeff Gerstmann being fired for giving an honest review.
* Itagaki falling out with Tecmo and losing the DOA franchise

Mine has to be when M$ entered the gaming business. majadamus
Fanboy. Seriously, what have they done with their games division that can be considered a tragedy? Millions and millions of people enjoy their games and systems, so I don't see what the tragedy there is, unless you just don't like shiny happy people.
