360 and PS3 Opinions for this situation

Trying to decide between PS3 and 360. Will use primarily for blu-ray or HD-dvd viewing as well as upconverting my SD dvds. Will also game a little;primarily sports games like madden, fifa, nba 2k, and an occasional shooter (rainbow six type).

It looks like blu-ray is beginning to win that battle, but a system that upconverts would be optimal so I don't have to waste money guessing on the format war. Obviously the PS3 means more $, but could pay off with the access to the winning blu-ray technology. The 360 would be economical and I've heard the new madden is much better on it. Cannot tell if there is an ad-on or something that will allow the 360 to upconvert SD dvds. Basically, I don't know what upconvert capabilities each system has.

I've been a playstation loyalist till now and frankly the brand does not concern me only the best value and fit for my needs.

I've calc'd the cost of each system (to make each high def dvd capable) to start out.

$500 PS3, $50 HDMI cable = $550

$350 360, $170 HD DVD, $50 HDMI cable = $570

I've done a fair amount of research (alot on this forum), but am struggling to find info pertinent to my situation. Any input, new info, advice is most welcome. Thanks in advance.

PS3 for movies. You won't have to worry about that awful powerbrick and add-on cluttering up your area and the ps3 is as quiet as a mouse. Superior HDMI as well. Now for the games you say that you want ........... ummmmm 360 I guess but the ps3 versions of those games should be fine.

Thanks for the opinions, I guess to clarify a couple things; I would like to join the next gen gaming wave as well as make a sensible choice for the next gen dvd viewing. I figure if I can do that with one machine then all the better (and less $).

Are there any future updates or price reductions hitting either console that would make one more attractive to a buyer like myself? I've heard there is a download for PS3 that allows it to perform as an upconvert player on regular dvds. Its things like this that I think will sway my vote.

Again, just trying to gather info from knowledgable people prior to spending that hard earned cash. Thanks.

The PS3 is a very good upconverting DVD player (Since you want it) since the 1.9 firmware update.

Anyway, PS3 is the way to go. One thing you may want to do is wait until X-mas. I predict that Sony will have a new, smaller HDD, unit that will run at $399. Some blu-ray, same upconvert.

All system updates are free and availble through your PS3 online or you can use you PC to get the update and transfer to your PS3. i recommend using the PS3's route.

I think this is an awful idea. If you could wait another year or two for either blu-ray or hd-dvd to become more established, the players will be down to 1-200 bucks, and all this 5-600 dollar silliness will seem like a waste. If I were in it for the movies, I'd definitely rather havea stand-alone player anyway.

If you're looking for movies the PS3 is your best option by far. For 360 HDDVD is an awkward unsightly add-on and in addition to that gigantic power brick you've got a pretty hideous jumble of stuff. PS3 has the (likely) winning format built in and is designed for movie watching. Just buy a remote, update your firmware (its easy, just get your PS3 online and go to network update bar) and you're good to go for watching Blu-ray, 1080p upscaled DVDs, and next-gen games.

And PS3 will still have all the multiplatform sports games you like, just right now a few of them run at lower framerates than the 360 version (which will not be true in the future). Probably wouldn't even notice except for a side by side anyways. And look into the downloadable games on PSN. LPB and Pain are going to be really good and there's a few good ones on there already like Super Stardust.

It's 60gb PS3 with 8 BR movies = $500 +$30 HDMI = $530 or 80gb PS3 with Motorstorm = $600 + $30 HDMI = $630 Online free

360 20gb = $350 + $150 HD DVD + $30 HDMI = $530 Online add $50/yr

any pointers on how/what to do to upgrade a cheap 20 gb ps3 to make it perform in the same capacity as the 60 gb?

blu-ray will not win any time soon. Imo, the next gen format war isnt going to be over for a long long time. Especially with paramount going to hd-dvd exclusive that means shrek 3, transformers are hd-dvd exclusive now, but the flip side is that blu-ray has pirates of Caribbean. cars blu-ray exclusive. Anyway you are going to miss out on quality titles either way. If you really really want a next gen player buy this standalone hd-dvd player instead. Nice cheap(well compared to the ps3).

If you really just want a 360, then just get it. But 360 is definitely less economical than a ps3. It may have more games right now but their console reliable is questionable. Definitely wait till that confirm a 65nm 360 before getting it.

Good point, in addition, I've been reviewing a lot of the available games for both systems and their reviews. I've noticed many games available on both consoles are criticized (from a PS3 standpoint) for operating with slower frame rates or other annoying bugs.

Are there signs that the designers are figuring the PS3 out and correcting these problems, or will the PS3 always be the less refined gaming system?
