360 Elite to cost $299 now with pic and its out Aug 30

Looks like we have an execution date for the Xbox 360 Pro model, with this shot from a Meijer catalogue due on August 30 indicating the 360 Elite is in line for a Pro-sized price cut.

You'll remember, of course, that the origins of this rumour - Ars Technica's ever-reliable Microsoft mole - are that the 360 Pro is being phased out, taken off the market entirely, and that the 360 Elite will have its price slashed to that of the Pro to compensate. This will leave only two 360 consoles to choose from: the cheap, hard drive-less Arcade and the 120GB HDD Elite.

'Lo and behold, according to this catalogue, that move looks like it'll take place a couple of weeks from now. So long, 360 Pro model. You lived, you red-ringed, you loved.

We've contacted Microsoft for comment, and will update if we hear back from them. If they don't confirm today there's a good change they'll announce next week during Gamescom.

I bet the Arcade gets a drop also to around $149

so strange they are keeping the arcade around, i guess they really want that $149.99 price point for advertising

i guess the whole economy of scale thing makes it cheaper to go out of production on the 60gig hdd

This is definitely good news. But it would be even better if they were replacing the Arcade model with the Pro one instead though.

xbox live is a great service and if ur willing to pay to play online then go for it u cant go wrong with the added content

u cant say that xbox360 is a better value (not saying ps3 is better value) but am tired of people saying xbox 360 is better value because of price

i already pay for online service with my internet provider i dont want to have more fees

but u do get what u pay for with psn (no content but great actual online gameplay)

only the people that bought ps3 when it came out have to worry about siaxis controllers

xbox 360 u still have to pay every year for online play, u have to buy batteris or charger, wi fi adapter (not everyone is luck enough to have modem/router in the same room as their xbox 360

how bout the people that bought the arcade version of xbox360 they wont be able to take advangate of all the great content on xbox live due to no hard drive to save content (dlc games, games on demand, movies,tv shows) u know the main reason to have xbox live

so the best value depends on what the user wants to get out of their console not the retail price that fools u into buying something u think is cheap until the add content adds up

Not to mention my TV. It cost $1,699. Then when I'm not playing games on it I'm watching cable, so we need to figure in that price of $480 annually. Don't forget to figure that into the console price.

I wonder how low the Arcade will be. Recent news stated that the Wii has the lowest user activity so I guess it was a smart choice to keep the Arcade for people who aren't really active gamers.

Thank goodness that I didn't buy a 360 all those times I had the opportunity to.That Elite will go good with my PS3.

if u add the 3 or 4 years for having xbox live then u end up paying the same for both systems if u bought them around 2005-2006

and i guess 99% of reviews here at gamespot must be magic becausethey should have better reviews like fallout 3 (ps3 8.5 xbox360 9.0) the only game with different reviews out of ALL mulitplats

so if its decent on the ps3 its the same on the xbox360

Guess what, a 300$ Xbox 360. Wowziez, mommy will buy this! He gets the thing, comes home all happy and stuff. He heard stuff bout Halo 3 multiplayer being very cool. He wants to play... Guess what. Gates needs 50 bucks for a new copy of Gears of War 2... Then he goes to his mate, who is happily browsing the net on his FREE online service on the PS3 on a ACUMULATOR wirless controller that can just be recharged and his daddy can play a brand new HD Blu Ray movie on a Blu Ray player thats in the thing out of the box... That he doesent have to pay 100 bucks for. Also the thing is connected to the net WIRELESSLY out of the box!

Gawd damn, the kiddie feals ripped off... He goes on the net and starts bashing on the PS3 and Wii owners ouf of his frustration trying to prove to himself that the 300$ were well spent.
