Peter Moore has been speaking of Microsoft's need to revamp its marketing strategies in a bid to widen the Xbox 360's target demographic. Leading analyst expects a price drop before Christmas.
Microsoft has made clear its intentions to widen its line-up of family friendly titles and redesign retail displays as a means of appealing to an audience not traditionally associated with Xbox.

In a move that has strong echoes of Nintendo's marketing strategies, Microsoft hopes to extend the reach of the Xbox 360 far beyond the 20 year old FPS fans that have propped up its games division since the release of the original Xbox and Halo 2. A price cut may also be in the works according to UBS AG analyst Heather Bellini, reports Bloomberg.

``If we don't make that move, make it early and expand our demographic, we will wind up in the same place as with Xbox 1, a solid business with 25 million people. What I need is a solid business with 90 million people,'' said Moore, corporate VP of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division.

Last month Moore talked up the value of Microsoft owned Rare, developer of Viva Pinata (pictured), in helping the company to appeal to a wider audience. Albert Penello, director of Xbox global platform marketing, also feels that Xbox needs to move away from its roots as a haven for hardcore gamers by offering more family friendly content. ``If you don't start building that content and reputation it never comes,'' he said. ``I don't want to be pigeonholed as a hard-core machine.''

Software analyst Bellini believes that if Microsoft's gaming division is to begin to turn a profit and emulate the success of Nintendo's Wii, the company will need to cut the price of the Xbox 360 in order to boost game sales. She says this could happen as early as September.

``If they really are going to have a good Christmas games lineup, then they just have to have the largest number of boxes out there so that they sell the largest number of games,'' said Bellini.

Although he declined to comment on the possibility of an Xbox 360 price cut, David Hufford, a director of Xbox product management, acknowledged that the console's price point, with the core 360 retailing for $300, could be more attractive.

``We are well aware that the sweet spot of the market is really 199 bucks,'' said Hufford. At $250 he labeled the Wii a ``strong value proposition, adding, "When mom walks into the store and sees she can get a console with a game for $250, she sees it as a $300 value. They've done a good job.''

Will we see a $199 360?

Not surprising, the 360 is due for a price drop and sales have dropped. Plus if they do drop the price by $100 in september with Halo 3, Blue Dragon, Lost Oddesey, Bioshock, the EA sports lineup, GTA 4, Mass Effect etc. It wouldn't be surprising if MS comes out 2007 with its lead largely intact.

My guess is that M$ drops the core to 249, premium to 349, and elite to 429 before Christmas.  That wouldn't be bad.

At 199 I'd buy it for sure. It's a great console just a little steep for what they are offering in comparison to the computer part prices in my country.

They really should get rid of the Core.

I think $350 for the Premium and $450 for the Elite, and I think the price drop will come like a day before Halo.

is microsoft dropping the price of games? if not, then people arent going to care. i guess they dont realize whats the real success of the wii yet. i heard there trying to go after the mother market/ female market, which is going to be a hard thing, especially with a controller like that.

drop price for games too, then we can talk about taking the market that nintendo is gaining right now.

MS sells the most software, look at the charts.

no need to drop game pricesits the hardware price that matters.  once you get that below $200 it attracts a whole nother market.  PS2 sold 80% of it's units when it droped below $200

A retail price of $300 for the premium is the only way for M$ to compete with Nintendo for now... If they wait they'll lose PERIOD!

i think they will wait til just after halo 3 because they know it will sell systems regardless. they will probably drop all 3 sku's by $100 just before gta 4.

that would be a ridiculous move, and something Sony would do, not MS.  Halo will sell 360s for months, the price drop will occur after Halo 3's sales start to calm.  Thats the right decision from a marketing point of view.

If there's a price drop AND Halo 3 and GTA4 all alongside each other this fall, it's hard to imagine any of the other consoles coming out on top this Christmas.

Depending on how the rest of this year goes, i may be tempted to get a 360 if it's in my budget and some good titles are released

Yes, the 360 is due for a price drop sometime soon, probably this holiday season. If they won't remove the Core, I think they should drop it down to a full $100. That would mean Nintendo is forced to make a move. The games are there for the 360, we just need the system to be a little cheaper. It's a great system with very good games, lots of them, I recommend it for anyone looking for any type of game.

Top 20 Overall Best-selling Games of April 2007

then again the wii doesnt have any seriously most wanted games at this point, as well as the ps3. it takes time for this chart to look vastly diffrent than it currently do. then again youre right about the pricing of the xbox360 games.

3 SKUs, in my opinion, is 1 too much. Nintendo got it right from the get go and it's good to see Sony following. It doesn't make sense to confuse consumers.

The Core seems to be causing problems for some devs in terms of HD space too (Rockstar with GTAIV being the latest) so MS should just get rid of it and focus on the Premium, which imo is great value for its price.

I agree, but if they get rid of the Core and drop the price of the Premium to 300, they have done nothing to lower the entry price of the system.  90% of consumers are not enthuiast, like ourselves.  They want cheap.  What M$ should do is drop the price of the Core to $250 AND provide a HD and an older game.

I take that back. They are pretty much the same with the Xbox 360 titles sometimes about £5 more for the big names...

The 360 has been due for a price drop for a while now. By comparison, the XBOX had 2 price drops in its first 18 months, while the 360 has yet to have even one. I was expecting a price drop of $50 across the board, but after reading this article, it sounds like MS may even drop the price lower (Core - $199, Premium - $299, Elite - $379).

Tired of the speculation. Bring the price drop already MS and the smaller CPU with it.

Also I wouldn't mind if they get rid of the core to lower it.

The 360 will never attract the market like the Wii. It just doesn't have the mass market appeal the Wii does.

A $300 Premium would do a lot to help sell the 360, but it won't dramatically change the market.

It won't help. The PS2 still outsold the Xbox even though the latter price-matched the PS2 step-for-step for two years. Price is not why people are buying the Wii over the 360 and PS3.

I may be wrong but I think that even if the Wii and the 360 were the same price the Wii would still be outselling the 360...The Wii is just huge right now and I don't think a 360 price drop will change it that much
