Only 14.8 million units and its been out for over 2 years.. I mean the PS3 will be at 8 million units worldwide by the end of this year and it doesnt even have ONE Exclusive AAA game. If memory serves me correctly didnt MS hit 8 million units just Feb of this year, so basically PS3 will be hitting 8 million units in a shorter time frame than the 360 did with no AAA titles, the most expensive console on the market and with very strong competition from both Nintendo and MS.. I just dont see the logic on how the PS3 is failing if you look at the overall picture..

A few months ago i was one of those that thought only USA matters when it comes to console sales but man im realizing i was dead wrong because as you start seeing the gap narrowing between the PS3/360 units sold, you then start to question how much better the 360 could be doing if it was selling good in Japan and outselling the PS3 in europe.. If 360 is at 15 million units and PS3 will be at 8 million units, the 360 wont even have a 2:1 lead over PS3 anymore.. and just think, the heavy hitting AAA games havent even hit yet.. so, how is the PS3 failing?

Exactly.. People might think now that worldwide sales dont matter, but when the 360 slips to 3rd place, they will see how crucial worldwide support is.. Because if the PS3 can atleast keep pace with the 360 in terms of sale but exceed them in Japan and Europe, 360 will drop to 3rd place in no time.. Just a couple months ago, the 360 had a 2:1 lead over the PS3, now what?!

Software sell on the 360. Almost every high profile game is a million seller. So at the end of the day that's all the matters to third party developers.

Exactly, and the funny thing is. The 360 had a few AAA titles in the first year and the PS3 being the overpriced console it is with no AAA exclusives is reaching the 8 million mark faster than 360 did. I mean the Wii surpassed the 360 no problem, and you wanna know why? Because of worldwide support, i hate to say it but 360 is dead in the water in Japan and unless they announce something huge for 08, im talkin Gears of war 2 huge, then they will lose ground here also

Ya PS3 is just so close to the 360  So you are happy that the PS3 is still further behind the 360 then it has been able to sell? Last in software and hardware sales for the PS3. Oh how quickly the mighty Playstation name has fallen and I think it is funny.

They sold about as much this year as they did last year. Mostly because of the hardware problems, they had to cut down shipments from 15 million by Q2 to 11.6, that at the time set off warning signs. So it's obvious they were taking the issue serious by the end of last year.

Even still, the Playstation 3 won't be able to catch up until late 2009. Even if the Xbox 360 were to only sell 7 million next year(which is what it will have sold after the holidays this year with the hardware issue) it would still be at around 22 million. I can't see the Playstation 3 being that close, maybe 17-18 million by the end of 2008.

I wouldn't be quick to call victory just yet. The PS3 will overtake the 360 this gen.

And yes in hardware sales the 360 hasn't exactly been a massive hit, 15 million in 2 years is nothing special, especially with a year head start over your competitors and full third party support. 360 will be the Dreamcast this gen, great games, but finishes last.

As far as sales PS3 sold less then half what the 360 has sold in half the time so that would mean the PS3 is in even worse shape.

I just thought of something that hasn't been released yet that could cause the PS3 sales to explode like crazy.

Once HOME is up and running this one service could cause this to happen.

The PS3's software sales are very poor in comparison to the 360's first year software sales. The 360 currently has a game attach rate of 6 games per user. The PS3 has also gone through significant price changes in it's first year whereas the 360 remained at the same price in it's first year.

omg yea the ps3 is definately starting to sell better, all it took is 2 price drops and the holidays to make the sales spike

honestly u ppl are getting too excited over this, wait till the holidays are over and it will be back to slugish ps3 sales, slugish-mediocre 360 sales, and great wii sales

thats basically how its prob gonna end up after the holidays, but cows just love to get excited over anything now and days

the thing is what difference does it make as long as developers keep making games for your system thats all that matters

Actually it's half the 360 sales in one year. So that would mean for the time frame it's still bang on course to equal the 360 after 2 years if sales remain constant. :|

Secondly the PS3 launched at a time when the Wii launched and with competition with the 360, unlike the 360's virtual year head start. And it also launched at an exorbitant $600 price tag. I'm suprised it's still staying with the 360 relatively speaking, over the course of its first year.

Lemmings need to do research before spouting off rubbish.

of course worldwide sales matter. although the europe and japan sales arent giving the huge advantage on the sales to make a difference between the ps3 and 360 all together. the sales between them are close in europe while even japan sales dominate the 360 but its not much to make an impact.

Dude, there is not a single credible company that totals the sales for Europe. So how is it that you know the PS3 is out selling the 360 there?

No. You obviously haven't been watching the gaming market from day one of the launch for all 3 systems. The gap has yet to narrow between the Xbox 360 and the PS3. I'm talking about worldwide sales, the XBox 360 has been outselling the PS3 every since it launched. The PS3 sold just over 6 million units in one year Nov 17th 2006 - Nov 16, 2007. The XBox 360 sold just over 7 million units in one years time (Not 10 million, like people keep thinking. They shipped 10 million, not sold). The PS3 is NOT at 8 million sold yet. It's at 7.2 million. The PS3 will hit 8 million at the end of the year and the 360 should hit 16 million. The only way the PS3 will start catching the 360 worldwide is if it starts selling close to what the 360 is selling in the U.S.

The only reason the PS3 is even selling better is due to the 2 price drop in less then 6 monthsand people purchasing the PS3 as a cheap Blu-Ray player. I'm wondering what will happen if M$ does put the HD-DVD player into the Xbox 360 next year like rumors have hinted at. @008 X-Mas should be interesting.

agreed with every thing but the HDDVD in the 360, microsoft makes mistakes but they aren't stupid stupidity doesn't get you to be the biggest software giant in the industry......AS for that your right the 360 would have to stop selling or sell dramatically lower then it has, and the ps3 would have to maintain a higher sell rate to catch up as it is now, If the 360 continues to sell at its pace and the ps3 its the ps3 will never catch up because of that 1 year head start.

And a lil future reference sony has no plans to release the 80 gig in europe last i hear, i do believe they will phase the 80 gig out every where else and stick to the cheap 40 gig... so they only have one sku....*shakes head* and it will be a mistake.

the ps3 and 360 are basically neck and neck in worldwide weekly and monthly hardware sales too but don't tell the lemmings that, they'll just get up upset and say your lying.---OkeyDokey---

Well if thats the case thats good news for sony, if they want to remain in last place that is. If you want to eventually pass the 360 in sales you would have to sell more than the 360 not just as much. Feel me??

COD4 still sold better on the XBox 360 in Europe then the PS3 version. Yes the software has sold better in Europe then in the U.S. because Europeans are Blu-Ray Sony fanboys. Uncharted actually sold twice as many copies it's first week in Europe then it did here in the U.S. I think American's are tired of Sony's arrogance and overconfidence. So..wait, we are suppose to be impressed by a console that is selling with significanly fewer AAA titles than the competition? Alls that tells me is that people are blindly purchasing the PS3 on brand name alone, or for blue ray. And let me tell you, that isn't good (for us gamers and the industry).

Will it really make you THAT much happier if/when PS3 surpasses 360 in sales? If so..what a sad sad life you live.

If 360 is at 15 million units and PS3 will be at 8 million units, the 360 wont even have a 2:1 lead over PS3 anymore.. and just think, the heavy hitting AAA games havent even hit yet.. so, how is the PS3 failing?

blackace

@008 X-Mas should be interesting.

dude you do realize that if MS made that move and implemented a built in HD-DVD for the 360 that would be death for them.. You think they are going to do that at no extra charge.. If they did something like that, that would put the 360 at ATLEAST a $500.00 price point, at that case.. Why buy that when you can get a PS3 for cheaper?! So go ahead MS, put that HD-DVD built in 360 on the market, they will definatley be shooting themselves in the foot

They shipped 10 million the first year, they sold about 7.5 - 8 million. This year they had to cut back their shipments to make improvements to fix the hardware problems. So after this holiday season they'll have close to 15.5 - 16 million sold. Not bad all things considered.

its because the blonde skater-boy ps2 owners have come to a decesion.

Blue_Panda

that's what they call "Teh Brand Name".

on topic:

Yeah I agree, it's not that great, that's why MS lunched the console earlier because they knew that they will win, Nintendo and Sony have the advantages of the brand name and the most important: sequels to proven series, Sony has MGS4, FF, GoW, GT5, which are all proven and famous series, on the other hand Nintendo has the some interesting sequels like MP,SMG, and TLOZ.

ok let's see what MS has as a sequel to a proven series, mmmmmmm Halo 3? that's it. plus MS doesn't have the strong brand name. they're new to the whole console wars and they didn't do pretty well last generation.

so yeah, if I were Bill Gates, I'd have lunched the console early, and made him as easy as possible to develop for. even if I had to sacrifice the product Quality (RRoD says hi).

MS is doing pretty well, but the Wii is winning, and let's face it, the PS3 is doing like sh*t, if it keeps selling like that he will never catch the X360 and the Wii, and the software sales are laughable.

I was expecting this to happen long before it did. The 360 sales have been dropping off almost from day one of the release of the PS3 and Wii.

ChristopherM80

cod4 sold 1.57 million copies on the 360 while ps3 sold 400,000 on npd november sales. wii still dominates the 360 and ps3 on hardware sales, but 360 outsells ps3 and wii software sales combined.

Yea but how many units did COD4 sell in europe.. People think America is the only country on the planet and it isnt.. People are saying uncharted and ratchet and clank sold bad.. Yea they sold bad here, but how did they do in europe? Thats what makes me upset about 360 owners, they have a one track mind and think America is the only country that counts while Wii and PS3 owners look at the big picture... WORLDWIDE sales

exactly brother lems only care about the u.s because it's the only place where the 360 is doing well

how did they do in Europe? In reality no one knows, because there isn't a single company that compiles sales data for that region. The only place that the 360 isn't doing well is in Japan.

Playstation 3 hardware sales in Europe = Xbox 360 sales in North America (almost)

Xbox 360 sales in Europe = Playstation 3 sales in North America (almost)

This race is going to be close...atlease between these two losers. While these two fight for second place the Wii is breaking all kinds of sales records.

Japan is becoming less relevant in the console race as time goes by, but it could determine the "winner". Really Microsoft just needs to get Japanese developer support instead of worrying about competing in Japan. Which it appears they're doing.

As for Sony, they'll need to outsell the Xbox 360 by ALOT each month just to catch up, let alone beat them.

Ya PS3 is just so close to the 360  So you are happy that the PS3 is still further behind the 360 then it has been able to sell? Last in software and hardware sales for the PS3. Oh how quickly the mighty Playstation name has fallen and I think it is funny.Eltroz

PS3's first year = 8m

360's two years = 14.8m

8 X 2 = 16. You fail.

Well it's more like 7 million so far for the Playstation 3 and 14.5 for the Xbox 360.

But by the end of this year they'll be at around 8 million and 15.5 - 16 million.

PS3 was forced to drop its price to boost sales. 360 wasn't.

Yeah, but that was beacuse the PS3 had a very poor line up. Plus, the 360 was alone in it's first year and it had no competition.
