I hear people always complain about having to replace their consoles at least twice. IGN staff member Matt said in his blog that his 4th Xbox360 lasted only 2 hours before the red light was on and he had to replace the system. What the hell is this? 400$ for a system that works for 2 freaking hours? The games for the 360 are nice but this sounds like a ripoff effort by M$. This puts 360 in the lower spot in consoles' ranking no matter how fun it can be. Even the 600$ PS3 sounds better. Some people also complain that M$ won't replace their consoles.

What about the 600$ flopstation 3? Is it at least more reliable? I would think the Wii is the most reliable due to the good record Nintendo hardware usually has.

this is stupid, go onto XBL and ask how many people have sent in their 360 to be fixed.  You'll quickly learn the whole thing is blown way out of proportion.

I have had a ps1, ps2, nes and xbox 360 break on me.. so unless another 360 breaks on me, then no its not the most unreliable console IMO.

Some consoles have a few problems at the start when they come out, thats how it is.

Ok, so is it a competition between PS2 and 360 for the title?

It might be a bit exaggerated, but the console is the most unreliable of the current 3. Many of my friends have 360s, and all but one of them still have their original 360. Of the one person who's 360 has not broken, the console did scratch his brand new copy of Gears of War on day one for unknown reasons.

I don't want to sound unpatriotic or anything, but it seems that just about everything that's American made these days is unreliable...especially when concerning electronics. (Automobiles is probably the most notable example.)

Everyone I know that has got the 360 has had to get it replaced. So far it's right up there as one of the most unreliable consoles ever.

Last i heard ps2 had a 4 or 5% the first few years it came out, so by that 3% isnt TERRIBLE... its nto GREAT, but its definatly not "OMG TEH TERRIBLE! WORST EVAR!"

If it was 3% thats not bad, but it is much worse than that. The only reliable numbers we can really get are from Microsoft(I don't they have released anything lately) and I have a feeling they aren't exactly going to tell the truth about this. And think, if the console wasn't so flawed why did they extend the warranty? They extended the warranty not to "play it safe" but rather because many consoles were breaking and they had to do this to appease those that have had consoles break.

I own every console since the NES, so you should get your facts straight, i love all consoles and am not a "fanboy" for either.

At the moment i play my PC, xbox 360, DS and ps1 the most

But yeah with the price being so high for a 360, it sucks to have problems... but so far it hasnt been any worse for me so far compared to any other console ive owned (although with my expereince, nintendo consoles are the most reliable, as the only one that has crapped out on me was the NES... 2 years ago messing  up finally)

I thought I'd also point out that the 360 obviously isn't the most unreliable console in history. The NES (well mine at least), and a bunch of those Atari systems were war worse. It still however is the most unreliable of this "gen".

First few years a?  We are at 1 year 4 months.  They can still make 4 or 5% easy.  Plus those are very unofficial numbers up there.

My launch 360, ps3, and Wii are all working like they were when I took them out of the box. Off topic however I did have to replace 2 ps2s because of the disc read error fiasco.

Nintendo makes the best hardware, hands down. M$ is a software company, so what do you expect. Sony is a hardware company and have already made 2 previous Playstations, plus 100's of other electronics. If they can't get a system to function probably after all that experience it would be a damn shame. The XBox 360 was obviously rushed out the door before it went through thorough QC testing. Sony delayed the PS3 long enough to get the system running right, but still could make enough of them to launch on time. In terms of hardware, the Wii probably had the best launch. In terms of software, I'd give it to the XBox 360.

Those percentages came direct from Microsoft who tried to keep all the failures hidden until they had to make an announcement about it. Microsoft announced a 3-5% failure rate. EA announced a 30-50% failure rate. At one point I checked about 15 different polls online. The polls ranged from 15% to 35% of people having 360 failure. The unofficial average was a 25% early 360 failure rate. Many of the people that marked yes on the poll said they had had more than one failure, so the percentage is actually higher.  At launch, Best Buy was warning people that they had breakages with their floor models and to buy one with caution.

ive had my Xbox 360 for over a year & ive had no problems- none of my friends have had problems either- at the end of the day only a small % have failure rates but due to the power of the internet you'd swear that 50% of xbox 360s broke down.

Yeah and I bet you that half of those dumbnuts didn't use the console in the right way. Than they blame MS for making a bad console. If they treat the PS3 the same way I know for a fact it's going to break too.

Define hypocrisy: A cow talking about 360 being unreliable, when the PS2 beat it hands down.

To the guy talking about his 30 'friends,' out of 25 PS2 owners that I have known, only 1 still had his original PS2. the other 24 were on at least there 2, because of DRE's. 24 out of 25, 96% = sad.,,,

I put off buying the 360 for a year because of all the talk of broken systems. Now my 3 month old 360's disk drive has started making a horrible grinding noise ever since I got master agent on the ultimate waste of $50 Crackdown. And yes my 360 is horizontal and not in a confined space, so how the hell could I be using it in the wrong way?! Should I stop watering it every day, or should I just masturbate to it while chanting I love Microsoft every night at midnight like you do PS3_3DO?

BTW my NES, SNES, Genesis, Saturn, PS1, N64, Dreamcast, PS2, Original XBOX, Gamecube, all my Gameboys, Gamegear, DS Phat, DSLite, Virtual Boy, Jaguar, 3DO, and motherf*^%in CDi, all still work with the NES taking a little effort to get a game started.

Microsoft needs to get it's act together quick. You can get away with horrible failure rates for stereos or DVD players but not in the game console business once you lose customers you lose them until the next generation.

Seems like you have a problem with anger. I have had my 360 for almost a year without problems and my DVD drive did make a grinding noise but it only happen once or twice. I think it has to do with the disc being dirty or maybe dust got onto the DVD laser anyway don't worry you got a 1 year warranty. Oh and I remember people having  problems with the PS3 when it launched. I don't think MS is annoying the problem like people think they are. The 360 is a high tech piece of equipment so you have to take very good care of it but like any advance electronics it can fail. Like the PS2 when it had problems Sony didn't get it sorted out until about 2 years after it launched so give MS some time to improve the console.

PS2 was a flop?

Only when it was giving DREs.

Same with the PS1, allthough from what I have heard. The PS3 isn't as bad. I could be wrong.

I don't know...it may be close between the PS2 and 360...

Actually it has been on the news and even on a program that talks about consumer welfare (in the UK).
