I personally do not want FFXIII and MGS4 and Sony's other exclusives to go over to the 360 and anybody who knows anything about monopolies can back me up here. Just think about this for a while.... If Microsoft gets all the games and Sony goes broke, which is the way things are heading, what's to stop Microsoft from creating a monopoly on the video game industry. If Microsoft has the only next gen gaming system that anybody wants to buy, Microsoft is free to charge as much as they want for it and, since they have no competition, who can stop them?

Also, this isn't really gonna happen for the 360 unless Microsoft does scoop up all the exclusives before they come out, but next-gen, Microsoft might have the position they need to create a monopoly.

The economy needs competition to stop this from happening and 360 owners should be happy that Sony is getting exclusives.

By the way I do have a 360.

Microsoft's OS monopoly hasn't worked out half-bad for me - their developer tools are great, and I have a near-ubiquitous platform to deploy on. Why should I mind if they have a monopoly on gaming?

Micrsoft doesn't have a OS monopoly as long as the Mac OS is continuing to do well and Linux is open source. What I'm talking about is Microsoft controlling the entire Next-Gen Market. Mac and Linux offer consumers things that Microsoft doesn't.

Even if MS did have a monopoly, they still wouldn't be engaging in the same blatant disregard for their customers that Sony is now. Also, consoles are not necessary to our lives. MS would have to deliver a decent product, or people just wouldn't own a console. Not to mention that we already have Nintendo, which is outselling the 360 as it is, and that with Sony gone there would be temptation for others to give the market a shot. So, no, we don't need Sony. Not even remotely.

First of all, Sony will not die...even if it loses this gen. Unlike Sega and Atari, Sony is not just a video game company. It is involved in the electronics industry and the movie industry. It has the resources to support itself, even if for some ridiculous reason the PS3 stops selling completely. Second of all, the real concern for 360 fans is this gen not next gen because they have bought an inferior product. They are losing out, whether they realize it or not. On the other hand, people with the foresight to buy the PS3 will still get to enjoy those games and still get to play Sony's first party game on a superior console.

I didn't mean just Sony, I mean't competition in general. People are acting like it should just be Microsoft with no competition.

Can't you read...I have a 360 only...NO PS3! And yes Sony has sucked lately but that could potentially be a bad thing for 360 owners later.

I'm just too afraid the same thing that happened to EA and their Football monopoly will happen to gaming if Microsoft has a gaming monopoly. I do not want them controlling every aspect of gaming, nor do I want every single gaming thing to come straight from Microsoft. If most of the good games comes from them and they have the only console on the market, then we can kiss innovation good bye and say hello to skyrocketing prices.

Windoz sux I only use it for games then it's back to Linux, as for the 360 winning the next gen war they have a long way to go still.

If nobody wants to own the console, then gaming would crash. With at least 3 different ones, we can keep variety alive. We should have never moved onto the next generation of gaming. I was just fine with graphics looking like that, but it seems now that prices are so high for both developers and consumers that there is no way gaming will survive from here on out, especially if one company owns all the developers.

There are laws to stop this. Atleast in the UK. No organisation can have a monopoly over a market here. They're allowed a large market share, but monopolies are a no-no.

Now that you do bring that up, I remember when Microsoft was in trouble with the law for licensing the right to use Microsoft DOS todifferents computer companies for around $80,000 or so. He did that, and had a total monopoly on the markets with his product on every single home computer. I don't think the lawsuit passed, but I'm not completely sure. We studied that this year in my computer class, but if someone can clarify this for me, that would be great. Please do it nicely though.

Just to clear things up... Monopolies are legal, but using a Monopoly to prevent another company from trying to sell products is illegal.

Yeah, but Sony is also in a lot of trouble right now with their Music department and Computing Lawsuit. They cannot afford to screw this one up.

That's a strong opinion. I could say the same as a PC gamer. But you see, the future of PC gaming has always been straight-forward. Yet, the console market can't stay consistent. Things change. Yes, the Playstation 3 can be the system to get this generation. But you have to remember this. Hardware is not going to really matter compared to the software on the market(which helps sell the hardware). Look, if the Nintendo Wii can outsell both the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 then that says a lot. I believe the Japanese market is important. But you also have to realize the both European and North American gamers are the consumers you want to sell too when it comes to market priorities. Most of the revenue comes from a the western market, mainly because we keep our options open. I think that Microsoft will not capitalize on gaining a monopoly(that goes for Nintendo and Sony this time around). I think developers will find more money by going mutliplatform as oppose to creating exclusive games. Production cost for the PS3 is to high for some games, and the hardware isn't always easy to work with. This time around it's about developers in my opinion.

1.  MS is never going to have a monopoly in gaming.  The market is too open and the competition too established.

2.  Sony is not going to go out of business.  They may have made some bad decisions with the ps3, but the company is enormous and has quite a lot invested in the gaming/multimedia division.

3.  A few titles going mulitplat will not change much if anything.

4.  Relax, stay in school, go to college, LEARN ECONOMICS, before posting this third grade conspiracy theory logic.

That was cold, and uncalled for. Oh, and how is it Third Grade logic? Let's see. 1. Didn't they come close to achieving this when Bill Gates almost made a monopoly on the PC market with DOS? 2. Isn't Sony in a whole right now from a mountain of Lawsuits? 3. It's more than just a few titles going multiplat. Every system seller appears to be going straight to the 360. 4. Explained enough. Stupid online haters.

Yeah but microsoft isn't going to have a monopoly on the OS market as long as it isn't the one who makes the pc's. If their OS becomes too expensive or too bad then companies like dell etc will use other OS's.

You should mind because it's bad for the economy. The gaming business has grown and will continue to grow and with growth you need competition which will initiate innovation, in turn keeping the gaming industry growing at a progressive state.

The Wii will be Microsoft's competition.  Things will be better that way.  There will be two systems with very different experiences that are sucessful instead of being like last gen where there are three that are very similar and you have to buy a new console just to get a new game when all of them could have run on one system.
