i think hl2 is more believable

it seems on 360 they just made everyting bumpy and shiny and not much else

its cool that 360 can do all that bumpmapping and hdr

but last i checked my wall wasnt bumpy or shiny

What's your point? It isn't all about being realistic; in fact, if I see a game that has foto-realistic graphics, most of the times it's boring. Really, what's the point of having the best engine around if the graphical style is very limited?

A few games do go too far on the bump mapping.  TC, give us some examples of the 360 doing it too much...

I agree, some devs tend to overuse it a bit too much making it look unrealistic.

What are you trying to state is that the developers use those graphical features too much. Because bump mapping and HDR exists on all current platforms.

Actually I like the mapping, especially when it is used to make brick walls look like they actually have bricks sticking out instead of being flat. HDR on its own doesn't really make things shiny just attempts to be more realistic lighting especially for outdoor scenes. Its the "bloom" effect that devs need to lay off and games that look washed out and brown *cough* Lair *cough*.

Yeah, give us some examples of the Xbox 360 console being responsible for this.

If you want piss poor graphics and textures, go play the Wii.

developers are going crazy with that crap in some games. They're just like "OOH LOOK WHAT WE CAN DOO!!!" and just because you can do it, doesn't mean you should. VG Cats has the perfect comic about this: http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=224

I think the whole look fits Gears of War very well.  The only game I would have a complaint about is PDZ...while it definitely looks impressive, almost EVERYTHING (even sand) looks like someone took a hundred gallons of gloss and dumped it everywhere.  It looks good, but it's kind of overkill.

So you would just rather have square and flat geometry in the environment?
