$399 40GB PS3 is indeed coming!!

According to Ars Technica, an insider source has confirmed that Sony will drop the price of the 80 GB PS3 from $599 to $499 this holiday as expected. Additionally, the company will launch a new 40GB PS3 model for $399 complete with a Spider Man 3 movie bundle.

The report claims that Sony will make official the rumor at this year's Tokyo Game Show later this month in addition to dropping the price of the PS2 to $99.

Sony declined comment when contacted by GamePro.

This is the best deal ever , $399 for a 40GB PS3 with Spider Man 3 Bluray movie included , PS3 will sell like hotcakes this holiday!!

I expected to see proof when I came in here. What a bummer.

unless *gasp* ms puts a price drop out! it costs 800 dollars to make a ps3. maybe 700 now.ms makes 70 dollars on every 360. if anything the wii will drop to 200 and 360 to 200 along with premium to 250 and elite to 300. then were back at square 1. and is this a permanent thing or a "fire sale"

Why is that? The PS3 is missing one key thing, games. There are still 2 360 SKUS lower than the PS3, and now that the Premiums have HDMI the benefit the PS3 has is even less important.

that doesn't mean that that won't lower it again. MS would be foolish to let such a price drop not go notice. If this happens and MS doesn't drop their price to remain competitive then they deserve to lose due to incompetence

Agreed, look what happened to Apple's Iphone when they did something similiar with a quick price drop succession. POed community. That is of course the 40 GB model isn't lacking in some other area like I've read rumors about.

Nope. I think MS would counter that 1 of 2 ways.

1. $299 and include the hd dvd player OR $299 and include 120 gig hd's and the core gets the 20 gig. Only problem with that is it would essentailly eliminate the Elite... :shock:

It would sell well though, no doubt.

And now theymight want to bring the lesser priced sku back but with more space. All they are doing is adding a bit of hardrive space to both original skus. If they add wifi and memory slots to the new one they will probably put something extra in the 80 gig to spice that up a little.

A $400 ps3would begood thing.

This is not bad. I would consider getting a 40gb if somehow I can get it for $250. This is possible if sony comes back with that $150 off offer with the use of their credit card. But I still would be hesitate to get a ps3 until the ps3 actually gets some good games.

And don't expect MS and Nintendo to sit back and do nothing. I predict MS and Nintendo will drop their price this holiday to push as much units out as possible and keep the console race competitive.

why would they lower the price of the PS2? It's the second best selling console this year! I highly doubt they lower the price of the console that is actually SELLING. As for the PS3...this generation has to be the absolute worst for gamers, around every corner Sony/MS have screwed over every fan...i just want to buy a console and not feel like i got ripped off in two months, not just two months, EVERY two months... this has to stop.VideoGameGuy

PS2 for 99 is the best deal ever . It will boost PS2 sales

The blu ray player alone costs sony 300 dollars and all the other crap thats in that thing cost another couple hundread justto produce and so if they sold the ps3 for only $399 they would takes a huge loss on every console they sold and I dont think sony is going to do that.
