Platformers rule.

Because they define the video game.

They are what video games are about.

You can do whatever you want.

Video games are to explore a world that is not real. To be somebody else.

No other genre can convey that is good as a platformer.

It encourages exploration.

You can always go anywhere you want to go.

You can always just play around.

You are free!

Even if there's an objective, you are not forced to complete it right away.

You can go overhere instead, see what's there.

You can mess around.

The enviroment is always made to explore.

And there's variety.

It can be in an Arab village.

A jungle.

A haunted mansion.

In a snowy world.

On a swamp with a giant metallic shark.

On a city.

Even on outer space.

It's a trait that no other genre can do properly.

It's not about violence.

Not about story.

It's about f-u-n.

FUN.

It opens the door to art, possibilities, and suprise.

It makes you feel like a kid again.

On a world of linear shooters and short shallow minigames.

It's always good to know the platformer is still around.

QFT There really needs to be more platformers; one of the big reasons i want a Wii is for SMG. Might have to get Ratchet when I go shopping on Thursday, and then Banjo for 360 will be awesome. Just more need to come.

I agree why is that each system only seems to have one great platformer? There other but they are mostly crap.

JRPGS use to be the best. Fighters are amazing but sadly until next year they haven't been in abundance for a while.

The N64 and the PSone seemed to have a bunch of platformers. SM64, 2 Banjo games, Spyro, Crash, and plenty of others. I guess whether those games were good is subject to opinion, but once the PS2, GC and Xbox came out, platformers were all of the sudden few and far between. And now its even less.

Maybe its due to the more powerful hardware. Developers want to try more realistic games in order to immerse you into the game and give you a sense of awe. Ratchet is nice, but I am still more amazed by Uncharted and Oblivion. Hopefully, if this is the case, SMG changes the way developers think about that.

Most true video game genre....What does that mean?

Anyways WRPG is the best genre IMO.

Edit: Your description reminds me of Sam & max season 1

Really? Have you ever played a Zelda game, an RPG, or tons of other games? GTA isn't the best, nor was it the first.

I agree. JRPG's used to be the best until Japanese developers took in the stance of Japanese business where if an audience leaves cater solely to the die-hard fans. This lead to a complete hault in evolution and innovation of the genre. And don't even get me started of how bad they are for choosing their platform of choice for their projects. If it wasn't for Atlus the genre would be nothing but a joke. As for Fighters people are too lazy to get off their asses and start LAN parties so they get frustrated with the online and would rather play shooters or something similar. I'm also sad of the lack of 2D fighters, I mean Street Fighter IV in 3D?

Come on Capcom I want to see sprites as detailed as this!

Capcom said that they pushed Sprites to the limits? My ass.

Nintendo does not have to pay Rare to put Banjo on the VC. Well they do not own rights to Banjo they do own the rights to the games. That why you will not see any of the old rare games on the 360.

This is where I take issue with your post:

They are what video games are about.

You can do whatever you want.

Video games are to explore a world that is not real. To be somebody else.

No other genre can convey that is good as a platformer.

Willy105

Why is that what videogames are about? I didn't know people played Pong in order to 'explore a world that is not real'.

Exploration may be what videogames are about to you, but the genre is far too diverse for you to say that this set of videogames is the set of 'true' videogames, and that other videogames aren't true videogames.

Good wrpgs are the only games that truly satisfy me as a gamer, because they are more than just about fun, even though they provide that too. Like when I was playing mass effect, felt like I was back in the day enjoying a good sci fi movie, or the witcher, I can't even explain what that games like but damn, it's one hell of a game. Glad I got to play both those games, best rpgs to come in a long time and both extremely different.

Platformers just can't call up the kind of adrenaline that FPS and racing games can. Platformers just don't give the sense that you're fighting for your life, that it's kill-or-be-killed, the way an FPS can, or that the tiniest mistake will cost you everything, the way a racing sim can.

If you're not looking for that much excitement, then a platformer might be a great game, but not everyone's tastes are the same.

Agreed,

Banjo Kazooie/ Tooie and Galaxy are right up there witht the best games I have ever played. Cant wait for the new Banjo game, it has been far too long since I last played the first one. Might go and do that now actually, such a fine game that it was.

Even though you kinda repeated your points a few times, I still agree. I love platformers, sandbox games, and wrpgs. any game where u can explore/mess around and have fun = win.

but then, i'm always won over by a really good story, so i dont really have a favourite genre :P

although i like platformers, i think galaxy and some DS games are the only ones that are really worth the play/ buy.

But i think the diversity in games is good. and they're all games with as much a right to be here as platformers..

Platformers don't encourage exploration. In fact, they rarely do.

There's also some route you have to take. Take the latest SMG for example. There's always one way to get to a star.

All of the things you mentioned is best in games like GTA or Elder Scrolls, where you truly are unbound.

Platformers and rpgs are my favourite genres but to say their the best flat out is arguable but yeah have you noticed the state platfomers are in, they're pretty much a developers ***** genre at best half the time. Oh yeah 2-D platformers man your not giving them enough credit I mean warioland 3's gs score beats all mario platformers to date (it got a nine point eight dam smilies :P) just for a little evidence of their awesomeness and personally it still beats most 3-D platformers Ive played (all but JSRF).

i think platformers are the roots of mostvideo games(not including pong and that).lets say SMB was the one to start the era of gaming. now one person said alright lets use these elements from mario but make him a hedgehog and run really fast, or lets give this dude a gun and shoot his way out of his situations. or ok lets leave this dude solve puzzles in order to get where he is going. And now look at all the game diversity, so in a way plaftforming exists in all types of games.

Is that really true?

There are plenty of genres that have very little relation to platformers, and don't owe much of anything to the genre. Exploring a world takes more from old PC text adventures and the Atari game Adventure than from a game like Mario, which was as linear as they get. Scrolling shooters themselves have been around for ages.

Platforming is an important and influential genre in terms of how to explore space, but they certainly aren't the only ones, and they don't define most games.
