We already have the DSi and PSP. And Apple is really pushing iphone/ipod as their handheld console with some serious titles coming.

But there is a fourth one that I don't think anyone has really considered. The rumored Zune HD. Anyone else see this as Microsoft's first venture into the handheld realm? It's not entirely certain this will be just a media player.

i'd love that, ZuneHD looks awesome, plz come out soon

its rumored to be able to play XBLA games, and if it has more original games than the current Zune XNA scene can crank out it will be awesome

looks good, my only need is it has a touch screen that clicks like the Black Berry Storm. feels better

the original zune can play games. i would know. i own one and am able to play games on it. the zune HD is rumored to have graphics on the level of the xbox 1. it could be true if they are using Nvidia's Tegra chip. it would be embarrassing on sony's behalf to have a portable game console get outdone graphically by an mp3 player.

HOPEFULLY $250 but tbh, i wouldn't be surprised if it goes on sale for between $300 and $400 like the ipod touch. this has a 3.6" multitouch OLED screen. that right there should hint at a high price but i'm hoping, as you probably are, that the price is $250. i'll pick this up in heart-beat to replace my zune 30 if it's $250.

Zune HD? Ipod? IPhone? Does anyone really consider those things to be handheld gaming consoles? I got an Iphone and seriously you couldn't pay me sit down and play some of those games, it's nothing more than glorified flash games that you can play for free on any laptop. Zune HD, Ipod, Iphone, they will never become real handheld gaming consoles, for one reason, they aren't designed for games. There isn't even a proper, control pad.

I want a zune hd so much lol. Cannot wait to find out more details. I want it as a media player, any thing else is a bonus. I'll stick to my ds for my handheld gaming needs.

apple is also guilty off ripping off competitors. they ripped off the look of the iphone from LG, as well as the touch screen phone concept and they ripped off the name iphone from cisco systems. they actually got sued for that but settled out of court. apple also ripped off video playback and photo playback from creative and diamond and others. hell, steve jobs even went on record saying they will never make an ipod that will make videos. like another poster said, business is business. actually it's more like baseball, stealing is ok as long as you don't get caught.

Just because something can display decent graphics does not make them handheld consoles. It takes a lot more than that to create an actual game console. Zune is media player Ipod is a music player Iphone is a phone Just cause my phone can take photos doesn't mean I'm gonna start leaving behind my real camera on trips.

Except it wasn't designed with that in mind, hence people still buy ipods for music and zune for media and etc. PSP's Media player is a peripheral function and will always remain a peripheral function. Best example, most high-end digital Photo Camera's now have video capturing ability, but does that make them legitimate movie cameras? No Nobody in hollywood is gonna drop the Arriflex, Panavision, and Red One just cause your digital photo camera can now capture HD video. At the end of the day, a device will always be known for it's main function and not it's peripheral functions. How would you like it if you hired a expensive Wedding Photographer and he showed up with nothing but an Iphone? Iphone's are camera's too you know.

actually that's the point of having a camera, games, and mp3 player in a phone. this way all you need to carry is one gadget that can do everything. this is pretty much how things will be done from now on. just look at the phone and gps accessories for the psp. as technology get's better, cheaper and smaller, more types of gadgets can be built into one because it's easier for the person to carry one item instead of several items that are only able to do one job. hell, phone are now coming out with 8MP cameras with Carl Zeiss lens'. nokia's n82 has a 5MP Carl Zeiss camera and the upcoming LG Renoir has an 8MP camera with video recording and playback including playback of divx files.

Ever hear of an old saying. "A Jack of all trades, is a King of none." The more functions you squeeze into any device, the less it is capable of doing any one thing well. This is fact. Ever heard of Hadron Collider that doubled as a Tea dispenser. Or a Super Computer that also doubled as a Steam Bath. How about a Baseball bat that doubled a Pillow. You see how the old saying now comes into play. A 35mm Arriflex Camera will never double as a Cellphone. A Cellphone will never truely become a game console. For obvious reasons. The same logic applies for all devices. There is nothing wrong with a multi-functioning device but you will always have devices created and honed for one task and one task only. Let me know when you'd be willing to spend good money on a Wedding Photographer armed with an Iphone and I will believe your argument.

Good point.

bad point. ZuneHD presumably would have different Apps store-esque games

Zune 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 30GB, 80GB, 120GB plays all the XNA games (like Tetris, tower defense games, a Pokemon being made for it, RPGs, ETC) along with the ones MS distributes like Checkers, Space Battle, Hexic, etc.

so to say the ZuneHD can't show you a serious game is flawed, coz you've never seen a game for the rumored ZuneHD, ZuneHD games would play different coz of the touch screen

and i love playing Katamari, Field Runners, Rolando and Real Soccer on my bro's iPod Touch

Additionally i hear Hero of Sparta, SimCity, iDracula are really good. IGN has a separate App store games review section i believe some of them are really cool (field runners is cool!!!!!!!)

this isn't able excellence in one field or all at once. it's about convience. true, you'll never see a professional photographer conducting business with a camera phone, but the higher qualty parts in the camera phone allow for th user to take better wuality pictures on the go. like i said, as the tech gets cheaper, the overall product gets better. btw, the LHC has problems staying operational, let alone making someone tea (or coffee. i prefer coffee).

you also forgot that ms is allowing anyone to make games for the zune. it uses the same xna tools found on the xbox 360 for the arcade games.

Thus we come to same conclusion, certain devices will always excel at certain tasks and thus be known for that particular task. I'm sure ZuneHD, Ipod, Iphone can run some decent games, but for the purpose of gaming, I will always prefer a device created specifically for the task at hand. But I'd love to see the Hadron Coffee Machine possibly 100 years from now. That would be a blast, literally.

perhaps some day when the tech mature enough it could handle all tasks beautifully but specialized equipment will always be necessary for best results. the hadron coffee maker would be the perfect espresso machine. one drop and your wired for days.

i never thought about that. it could happen. i think that microsoft will release it. a lot of those are rip offs of each other. everyone rips each other off. one person has an idea the next person changes it a little bit.

That is how things improve, we're ripping off almost everything in our life from previous eras and we'll keep on doing that while improving stuff generation by generation. That is how we reached this huge technological improvement, at least this what I believe :P . A small idea from here, another idea from there, put them together, mix them in a certain way and hooray, we have a new innovative product.
