Interesting...
Interesting read but this is posted on PSU.com without any links to external sources to verify the claims. Put that alongside the fact that we haven't heard any developer talking about using this to any real extent in any upcoming titles and I start to smell a rat.
Let us worry about the PS3 being able to run arcade racing games at 60fps orFPS/TPS above 30 before we worry how it can handle a graphics engine that evolves over time.
Again, sounds like bull. And this is old. REAL OLD. But to stay on subject, they seem to love the PS3 to the point of being Sony propaganda. Let me take this excerpt from the passage:
If you look closely at the calm boat dock scene above, the docks are being splattered by rain. The wood is literally degrading with every drop that hits it. The light poles are rusting with every second. The light bulbs are degrading with every photon of light they are emitting. The wooden cabin is degrading, while the grassland outside is rotting slowly. These all fit into the core realization of 4D graphics.
I've seen water ripple in other games, that's the only thing it has. The wood isn't degrading, the poles aren't rusting, and the light isn't dimming. Sounds like they're stretching a stretched concept way out of proportion. And look at the link. PSU. Trustable source there.
Yeh! PSU have never steered us wrong before! They were right about Sony buying Rockstar, and that 'interview' they did with that guy who definitely was from Valve and definitely was not from their forums. They's reliable. This article has been posted (and roundly mocked) a few times now.

4th dimension = Time. Period the end.SemiMasterThey don't get it, time it self can not be seen. The guy in the article is just basing it off, his theory of what 4D is to him. Plus he's from a PS website, how credible is that. No other site has ever announced 4D graphics, why because they don't exist. Plus what he is talking about has been done for almost a decade on PC's. He is officially a Sony Fanboy.

"The fourth dimension is often identified with time, and as such is used to explainspace-time in Einstein's theories of special relativityand general relativity."
they had even studied basic physics they would be ashamed of them selfes for even talking about 4D in such a retarded way..
They could say that the PS3 will do 5D also, in the form of how emotions changes the events in the characters.. That would be about as stupid...
i'm still waiting for my 120fps and 4D ps3 game...Burnout_Player0
can you see above 60fps? you are an XBOX 360 fanboy, right?

Actually scientists have proven over and over that the human eye can see well beyond 60 fps. This was covered in countless topics on here before."The fourth dimension is often identified with time, and as such is used to explainspace-time in Einstein's theories of special relativityand general relativity."

Yes, X,Y,Z and another dimension which we percieve as something linear = Time, the fourth dimension. Physics states you cannot have matter occupy the same spacial coordinates at the same time. XYZ are the spacial coordinates.
Regardless, Sony talks out their butts when they say "Experience 4D". That's the point. Everyone has experienced the fourth dimension.
And according to the Grand Unified Theory, there are 11 dimensions total.
Anyways, this is relevant to this discussion because Sony basically talks random nonsense PR spin like Jacking into the Matrix, and Toy Story Live Render and crap. And what the original article states is just something totally off the wall and is like another person in this thread said "blast processing" like Sega used to market the Genesis with.

exactly, waiting
Interesting read...before reading I thought the 4th dimension was time and I was right...but the true question is how is this applicable to games...will it only be used during a cutscene to show the environment change...not sure, but I'm interested in knowing how this technology will be used...tryfe_lyn
Something perfect for them to use in Timesplitters. Just imagine, besides moving like a normal fps, in a 3d space, you can move the sixasis to walk through time. Maybe a limted power where you can stop, reverse or forward time by moving the controller up and down.
Or even crazier, jump to another hypothetical 5th dimension by moving it sideways.
Man, I'm no FPS fan, but I'd play a game like that.

I agree. The demo looked like it could have been Gears of War, in the rain levels.

There's no Grand Unified Theory, but several candidates.
And (at least I hope) Sony never said anything about 4D graphics. 4D is related to the ps3 controller.
With 2 analogs you can move in 3 dimensions. The motion sensing working as a 3rd analog stick would allow you to move in 4 dimensions. That's where the you "Experience 4D".
For instance, have you ever seen a time lapse movie, where it seems you're travelling thru time? So suppose you use the analog sticks to move around in 3D space like any FPS, and the sixaxis to control the speed of the time passing. 4D.

Well perhaps, at least the last revision to the GUT was 11 dimensions, 10 didn't work.
However, the Sixaxis controller is a misleading term. There are not six axes as we percieve them, unless you count the positive and negative directions in a Cartesian coordinate system (Which is what we generally as a species percieve the world in). So just because you don't have to use the D pad or analog sticks, doesn't make "sixaxis" another dimension.
interesting take on 4D, but who is this guy to say the 360 can't do it.....
its hard to believe especially since the article is on psu.com

I didn't say it was a dimension.
It IS a control input as capable of the analog sticks.
Suppose you're in a 3D space flying forward, pressing the analog left up, while climbing, pushing the right analog back(in a invert-Y scheme), you could move thru other dimensions using the sixaxis motion sensing while moving, just imgine the sixaxis is the tip of a 3rd imaginary analog stick.
You stick you're arms forward, while holding both analogs, and you move forward and up(in 3D) and ahead in time in a forth dimension.
Aalog sticks aren't dimensions either, but the most control schemes associate them with 3D navigation as the motion sensing combined with analogs can be associated with 4D navigation.

No, motion sensing and analog sticks and other combinations of buttons can only make you sense and interact in the game in 3D dimensions. What you are doing is simply talking about another method of input which controls your character/vehicle in a 3D rendered world projected onto a 2d surface (your TV or monitor). There is nothing 4 dimensional (time doesn't have to be the 4th dimension, regardless) about what you are saying at all.

You're constrained by 3D interpretaion of reality.
If you're playing as a being capable of moving in 4 dimensions, the 4th being time or quantum dimensions, like in the multi-verse theory or whatever, you can still move and do anything you'd do if you weren't moving.
For instance, you're moving in a 4 dimensional context and battling thru time(aiming, shooting, running etc....)
While traveling in one dimension(time), you also aiming(height), shooting, and running(2D surface). You move thru time like you move thru the other dimensions you're used to.
