If...

  • You do not earn money from playing video games.
  • You do not compete professionally in LAN tournaments.
  • You do not suffer from an MMORPG addiction.
  • You do not prioritize video games above all other important things in your life.
  • You play consoles from either of the big three or on the PC.
  • You play video games for leisure purposes.

...then you are a casual gamer.

Screenshots of video games that can be played casually by all of us.

Everybody wins. None of this "I am teh hardcore" nonsense.

Yes, I disagree with your view of the hardcore gamer. But I agree most gamers enjoy those games you listed.

Sorry, but I wouldn't place an entire group of people who think Madden 08' is the greatest game ever made in even the same viscinity as an actual gamer.

No, I'd have to disagree. In my opinion you can be a hardcore gamer without putting it at the top of your priorities. Say, it's your main hobby. Hardcore and casual are hard to distinguish against a lot of the time because people are different.

Most of those titles look/are fantastic, and I agree they can be enjoyed "casually" by any gamer.

I don't really care what I'm labelled as, I'm just going to get/play/enjoy any game that interests me.

Generally I agree with you, although I would characterize anyone who spends upwards of21 hours gaming a week(works out to3 hours per day)as "hardcore". Hardcore is more of an elitist term than anything meaningful, just like rock snobs, they just need to feel superior to make up for some shortcoming.

Crawl back into your hole. Killer 7 scored high AA despite it's shortcomings. No More Heroes is a sandbox open ended action adventure game and it looks incredible.

Why is that? Because both of you are mislead/misinformed?

Is it a lie that so many casual gamers don't have knowledge of gaming and end up turning crap tv, movie, shows celebs. based shows into top selling, games that mostly thrown away there after

You place your views of casual gamers only in the positive side by showing games with great production value and are casual friendly then antagonise hardcore gamers by calling them ppl with no lives that only play games over anything which isn't completely true, cus the negative is there as well for both.

So, because I dont earn money by playing video games or compete in professional tournaments, I'm a casual? I'm no hardcore gamer, but I'm certainly not a casual. There needs to be a catagory in the middle.

Hardcore gamers are just nerds trying to act like their lifestyle is superior to others. Of course this is a generatlization, and I don't have a problem with nerds, its true.

Pretty much, if you're a "hardcore" gamer, you're missing out on some of the best games of the generation.

Depends on your definition of a hardcore gamer.

I'm picturing someone who doesn't bother to play Halo and Grand Theft Auto because of the casual appeal and them being "over-rated".

While I agree hardcore gamers play more obscure games, they still neglect other ones.

Well that you described is a dumb ass who is neglecting good games. I enjoy mostly hardcore games, but I also enjoy GH, GTA and other casual games because I know they are great games. Hardcore gamers taste should be broader since they are more into gaming.

The 4 levels of gaming are as follows:

Pro Gamer: Some one who competes in tournoments

Hardcore Gamer : Some one who plays and can appreciate good deep games. (most everyone on this form) (Capable of Enjoying *All* games)

Casual: Someone who sees a TV commercial for a game and decideds to buy the game because of it. (The Majority) ( Buys Games like GTA, Halo, FF, God of War, ect)

Non-gamer: some one who buys a nintendo wii. ( Buys "games" like Brain Age and Wii PLay)

Those are good definitions although I'm still uncertain about the whole non-gamer thing. And ''tourneys'' should count as hardcore.

Judging by that list I'm definitely a casual. I like being sort of casual. I mean all these hardcore gamers seem to be hard to impress when it comes to graphics, because of the lighting framrate etc. I don't realy want to know how to recognise all these things cos I'll probably be a lot more picky on my games and will probably not be able to enjoy the game as much.

No More Heroes is NOT a casual game.

And yeah by your definition I am a casual gamer. Even though I play 30+ hours a week of Wii and 360 I still put work/school first, I play games for leisure... because they should only be played for leisure. And I dont compete in tourneys, or lan. Does this make me casual.

Just beat Kid Icarus BTW. Woot for me. :D

You are obviously not hardcore then since you don't appreciate ALL games. Owned by own definition.

Wow. Elitist much?

You're what's wrong with gaming.

Edit: I mean to say, your post is what is wrong with gaming. It hurts me inside to think that my favorite hobby could have someone who actually believes what you just said infiltrating it.

Well I count myself as a casual gamer, simply because I don't play that much anymore. I own a huge game collection, know pretty much everything there is to know about games, and play titles that most people have propably never even heard of, but imo a true hc gamer has to play more than I do.

I have to agree. For me there is more to life than videogames. To me its something you do when your bored thats fun. To people on these boards its a passion and thats fine by them. But I would rather have a balance of games and other things like friends and sport
