6 reasons according to PC Gamer.

I will just fit them on one page. Don´t shoot the messenger :P

1. The Oculus Rift

The Rift has inspired a renaissance in virtual reality and related tech, and its the single most exciting thing happening in gaming hardware at the moment. Its the perfect combination new technologies that directly and tangibly give players access to new experiences. Microsoft and Sony are touting camera-based systems with questionable utility and even questionable legality in certain territories. Theres none of that uncertainty with the Rift its cool, its evolving fast, and its purpose is obvious.

It plugs into everything thats already great about the PC: the grassroots enthusiasm of modding teams, the long history of great first person games, and a focus on games as a hobby rather than as a nebulous lifestyle entertainment entity. It might take a while for flailing around with a VR headset on to be socially acceptable, but its great to have something to be excited about.

The future doesnt look like a bunch of smiling people yelling MacDonalds at their televisions: it looks like someone with a huge pair of goggles on running in a motion-sensitive bowl while pretending to fight a dragon. Thats much, much cooler. Obviously.

2. Its got the best graphics

If you saw the two Battlefield 4 conference demos, you may have noticed the telling little backspace key prompt in the top right corner. They were running on PC. Of course they were.

You dont have to imagine what the next generation will look like. You can see it right now. You can playit right now. Find a gaming PC made in the last couple of years, get Crysis 2, then install the MaLDoHD Texture Pack.

Actually, no. The next-gen consoles almost certainly wont look that good.

For years, the restrictions of the current consoles have become increasingly stifling for developers, and theyve been using the PC to stretch their legs. Metro: Last Light, Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, Battlefield 3, Skyrim. All games that, with their graphics settings turned up, outperform anything the consoles can handle. And thats not including the added spit and polish that mods can provide.

The next generation isnt about forging ahead. Its about catching up. At times, literally. PlanetSide 2 is making its way to the PlayStation 4. For that system, the mix of sci-fi visual flair and epic scale is the next generation. For PC owners, its just a game that they can play. Right now.

Theres a reason the Xbone and PS4 are shifting to a more PC-based architecture. Its because PC-based architecture is really good. A PC doesnt just guarantee you graphics that will match what the next-gen can handle its already delivering them. And where those consoles are stuck with the same level of technical performance for the rest of their lifespan, the PC has room to grow.

3. No ten-year cycle

As soon as the consoles are announced, theres a countdown over their head. In ten years, the PS4 and Xbox One will be obsolete. Thats not a worst-case scenario: its a proudly stated feature. Its also a misleading one. In six or seven years the system makers step up to the E3 stage and announce the nextnext-gen. Then, as will soon happen to PS3 and Xbox 360, the support becomes nothing more than hobbled ports; both systems limping to the finish line before being put out of their misery.

That cant happen on PC. Our technological advances are on an individual, component-based level. Its not a locked-in list of technical specs; its a system that can expand and evolve naturally over time. With every upgrade, your rig feels brand new ready to tackle the latest games for years to come. Even a change of OS is a minor procedure along the way.

Not that any upgrade is mandatory youre free to build to the level you want. If you dont like the look of Windows 8, you dont have to use it. If you dont want to be bombarded with particle effects, that new graphics card can wait until the prices have dropped. At every hardware level, there are games tailored for you.

And think of this: World of Warcraft was released in 2004. Our platform has games that are being supported longer than most consoles.

4. Be as social as you like or dont

Every novel social feature that has been demonstrated at the major console conferences is already possible on PC: no matter how enthusiastically a grey-blazered exec might try to convince you otherwise. Between streaming services like Twitch, YouTube, and the widespread availability of freeware editing software its already possible to share as much or as little of your gaming time as you wish.

As much or as little is the crucial phrase, here. Sharing features are a double-edged sword on console: they might be fun to dabble with, but they also plug you directly into the profitable info-gathering exercise that every platform holder has a stake in pursuing. Not only is the promise of quick streaming and sharing a case of new money for old rope, its giving you old rope to hang yourself with. This metaphor has become desperately confused.

How you socialise online is a sensitive subject, and the degree of control the PC offers is worth the inconvenience that comes with spreading yourself between multiple programs and services. Signing on to Microsoft or Sonys all-in-one platform might be simple, but its an abdication of your right to game and chat on your own terms.

5. All the games that matter new and old

The new consoles may not have backwards compatibility, but its okay, because Sony and Microsoft will almost certainly re-release their past catalogue for you to buy again. How wonderfully generous of them.

The alternative is to not treat classic games as a step backwards. How about instead we see games as a continuous timeline that has evolved over the years. And how about we let people buy games from any point along that timeline. And keep them. And be able to play them. No, unfortunately such an idea is just too outlandish to Oh, wait, its what the PC does.

That game disc youve got in a dusty box in your attic? Itll still work. It might need a bit of care: some DOSBox emulation, or a community patch, or a weird and fragile balance of Windows compatibility settings. But the point is its a PC game. Even if it was made for a PC in 2003, itll play on a PC in 2013.

Revisiting our history is even easier in the digital age. If you dont want to spend time patching and tweaking, you can visit GOG a service created to provide working digital downloads of classic games or Steam, where you can build a library that spans decades.

Prefer something new? Dont worry, weve got that covered too. Behind the conference double-talk of what an exclusive means, its clear that the PC has become too big to ignore. Even the games that werent announced Destiny and Ubisofts The Division are most likely just waiting for that timed exclusivity period to run out.

6. Its cheap

It might be possible to put together a passable PC for the price of an Xbox One, but the PS4s lower point of entry does mean that consoles will remain the cheapest way to play big-budget games. However, the fact remains that the price of games is only likely to go up and console gaming is expensive enough as it is.

Thats the core of the current kerfuffle over the status of selling and buying pre-owned games: for many people, trade-ins are the only way to keep the price of their hobby manageable. The PC has never had much of a preowned scene, so we found a different solution: Steam sales, Humble Bundles, and so on. Very few games retail at top dollar for very long, and the free-to-play scene which is only now getting its start on console is now big and mature enough to be a viable way to spend the majority of your time.

Buying a PC thats powerful enough to see out the next generation of consoles might cost a bit more, but youll make that money back in games while reaping all of the benefits of owning the system you put together. E3 might be won or lost by whichever console developer can offer players the least awful deal, but the PC proposes something else: why not have a good deal, instead? Picking the lesser of two evils doesnt make a whole lot of sense when you have the choice to pick something that is largely not evil.

Pretty much.

I love the freedom of choice I have on PC. I'm not a sociable person, so I'm free to avoid being plastered all over my face with social features from the PS4 UI. Continued stream of cheap games and support of old retro games.

No need to worry about generations is convenient. Just stick with mostly same hardware, just upgrade the GPU or maybe the CPU and you're good to go. Simple.

ONE big problem. PC doesn't play (most) console games. I can't play the new metal gear, naughty dog games, first party,... games on a PC. That's the problem and that's why PC doesn't win. (although it wins in everything else) But in the most important aspect, the games it loses imo.

1. VR didn't work 15 years ago. Oculus Rift won't work now. It's not about the technology. Gamers don't like wearing visors or helmets when they play games

2. PC never loses or wins anything. How can a platform which missed out on almost every other GoTY claim to win anything. Some of the best games this generation ie. MGS4, Red Dead Redemption, LA Noire, Uncharted games, Gears games, Halo 3, 4 Reach & ODST, Demon's Souls (PC gamers lucked out on Dark Souls due to online petitions) never even appeared on PC. That's not a characteristic of a 'winning' platform. If you're a true gamer and stuck to PC only, you're the one who lost out.

No need to rub it in their faces all the time... of course PC wins, but let the consolites have some peace and quiet for a moment while they're for the first time discovering 1080p and 60 FPS! :P

Yeah I thought it was an interesting read, though don't expect people to care much about PC during E3. Even for me E3 is all about consoles.

Our platform has games that are being supported longer than most consoles. PCGAMER

That is one huge reason why I like PC gaming so much. You can still find online servers for games that are 10+ years old, while I had trouble finding KZ2 servers after just a couple of years after it's release :(

They also get supported by the modding community so they stay alive and fresh for years. Paying for mappacks ? Not when there are brilliantly made community maps.

PC offers a great library for those with the newest tech and those with outdated PCs.

1. There's a biiiiiiig difference between VR now and 15 years ago.

2. Anyone who just has 1 system misses out on games. But it is a FACT that if you don't have a PC, you miss out on the most games. Saying you miss out on the best games is an opinion. Just because a game is GOTY doesn't make it factually better. A "professional" game reviewer does not have a better opinion than your own.

PC gamers lucked out so good on Dark Souls its the lead platform for Dark Soul 2

Explain why so many games are supporting oculus rift and the 1080p dev kit only came recently and consumer version isn't even out yet

LA Noire and Gears 1 are on PC, shows how much you know about the stuff that you're preaching.

Also, you could say the same about Xbox/PS only players, every person who only owns one system is not going to get all the great games. You have no point.

Meh, as someone who's been PC gaming for awhile now, it's not all it's cracked up to be.  Just another way to game.

All it really comes down to is who offers the games you want to play.  The graphics and steam sales are great, but it's not what should attract you to the system.

I would wait for user reviews first. MGS4 was supposedly going to be the best MGS game ever, according to the critics, and then gamers quickly decrowned it.

Those are general arguments, don't have much to do with E3. I think it's safe to say Sony won E3, mostly by MS failing to bounce back. One positive thing for PC was that the multiplats in general looked way better than the exclusives did. Both Sony and MS have pretty lackluster launch lineups. So for PC gamers there is little reason to get either one tbh.

Yeah to me the WiiU looks like the most interesting console to get this year because it's a bit older by now and it has more interesting exclusives around the corner because of that.

It has more exclusives than the consoles together... And most games on PC that also appear on consoles (like BF3/TF2/Skyrim) may as well be considered PC exclusives because their version is so superior. The games the PC miss out on are Nintendo games, and a mere handful of Sony/MS games (because they hardly make games). You could buy the Sony/MS exclusives near the end of a gen for supercheap, if you really need to play them.

That's why a true gamer will have both a gaming PC and a console or two. Consoles for the games that never end up on PC, and PC for the ones that do.

Depends on your definition of "most games"..... literally 70-75% of console games that are 8.0 or better are on PC (mass effect/bioshock series, all the tom clancey games, fallout 3, call of duty series, far cry 3, both elder scrolls, left 4 dead series, batman games, dirt series, all the assassian creed games, all 3 deadspace games, GTA 4...... ect).

<2. If you're a true gamer and stuck to PC only, you're the one who lost out.jhcho2
LA Noire is on PC. Expect next gen console emulation on PC.

If PS4 was backwards compatible I'd get it in a second. But, it is not and the PC back catalog is more than enough for me to ascend once I'm done enjoying the current gen games I'm still enjoying today.

Thread title is wrong, it should say "6 reasons why PC has constantly beat consoles"  (Not just at E3)

Just one nitpick and that is if you want to revive your collection of old games on GOG or steam you have to rebuy them like console remakes.  Although in fairness the prices are very much lower than what they originally were.  Sometimes even absurdly so when certain sales are going on.

That's why a true gamer will have both a gaming PC and a console or two. Consoles for the games that never end up on PC, and PC for the ones that do.

RossRichard

Well. It´s true if you have a good income. If you can only afford one platform, then PC is the best choice: it will have best multiplats, tons of third party exclusives, and will snipe occasinally a few exclusives from Xbox or PS.

Console gaming is great, but first party exclusivity comes with price.

PS4: 480$ (inclusiding taxes) + 60/70$ games + PS+ subscription + additional peripherals such as gamepads, hd etc. And you will skip on ton of games as a result.

Additional console:

Xbox One 600$ (inclusiding taxes) + 60/70$ games + Xbox live subscription + additional peripherals such as gamepads, hd etc.

So in total, entrance into console gaming cost

1080$ for both consoles + 600$ (for 10 games) + 120$ (annual subscription for Xbox live and PS+ ) + 120$ (2 additional gamepads)

= 1920$

Cool. But you need a good income to afford that.

PC, maybe, won´t replace you console gaming, but it´s still the most balanced platform.

[QUOTE="Suppaman100"][QUOTE="heretrix"]Considering the state of most console games, that's a good thing.

heretrix

You serious? Tha last of us alone is enough reason to buy a console.

No it isn't. One game alone doesn't justify buying any system. that's some real dumbass fanboy shit and the best way to having an 300 dollar doormat in two weeks..

Of course consoles have more interesting games than one. You stated most console games of now are not good, but last of us is better than most games released on PC in years.

Not to mention that it also can serve double duty as a HTPC if necessary as well as other utility things like school work, researching some DIY projects (like fixing your car, hot water heater), finding coupons, social networking besides the big ones like FB, etc etc...
