Its interesting that 67 percent of those who own the Wii in Japan are not playing it despite the fact that there are more than one game for the console.

This begs the question of is the Wii the new Tickle Me Elmo where at first everyone wanted one and then two years later it was yawn, not interested.

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=15872

Enterbrain president and prominent Japanese industry figure Hirokazu Hamamura has given his annual speech in Japan, in which he predicts that the current lull in Nintendo hardware and software sales is likely to be temporary - and that PlayStation 3 sales are also likely to increase with the release of the 40GB model.

Commenting on the recent slowing in demand for Wii hardware and software in Japan, Hamamura indicated that Enterbrain market research showed that 67 percent of current Wii owners in Japan had not used the console recently. He also suggested that the format was suffering from the lack of a follow-up hit to Wii Sports (which is not bundled with the console in Japan).

Becuase it's a novelty toy!! I've said it since the begining.

It's fun to say you own one, then its only fun to play for a few weeks and it collects dust

I'm pretty sure that I haven't turned mine on since I beat Metroid Prime 3, which was about a week after that came out. I won't play it until Galaxy comes out.

even at 67% the wii is still probably the most played console. they certainly aren't playing the 360 or ps3. they are mostly playing the ds since they all have one.

Today we do simple math:

100 percent MINUS 67 percent(those that no longer play)= 33 percent.

33 percent are those that still recently play the wii console, pathetic.

Old.

And 33% of the install base for the Wii in Japan is still greater than the combined install base of both the 360 and PS3.

So...

In the immortal words of Homer Simpson

""Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. 14% of people know that."

The reality is that statistics look good but they are easy to manipulate. For example, if you ask 3 people and 2 of them said they don't touch their Wii recently, that's 67% right there:P

do we know the % of 360 and ps3 owners that have played thier consoles recently in japan? no we don't. which is what makes this statistic VERY limited. we know that the DS is what rules the software charts in japan. that's probably what they are playing the most. it's certainly not the ps3 or 360 right?

Wow. I haven't heard this one before.

Hopefully this will change at Christmas, because right now I understand why they aren't playing Wii. Even I have been neglecting mine... probably until Christmas.

Lets just say that my Wii makes a nice wheelchock to keep customers cars from rolling as we install amps and subwoofer boxes in the shop.

And thats my personal take on our the wii dust collector.

On the Game Cube it was oh look time to get a new calender and time to get another game.

One game per year(that I wanted) sucks real, real bad so yeah boy did we learn from that "huge list of promised games" and in reality its same old, same old only now the lies come with waggle control.

The Wii is not a good system if it's your only system. There is too long of a wait between games, and Xbox 360/PS3 has a lot of games that I know the sheep wish was going on the Wii.

I'll bet even the new Street Fighter 4 skips the Wii.

Without any stats of the other consoles to compare to ( I assume Famitsu had those numbers), 67 percent is meaningless. Its like saying gasoline ignites 50 percent of the time. Though, I do believe that 67 percent statistic is probably lifted solely for baiting fanboys.

I am not surprised. I had a wii and played it for months thinking it was so cool. But it then got so old for me. I mastered wii sports on the first day. And once i finished zelda i had nothing but mini games. Thats why i changed it for a ps3. Soon im going to get a 360 as well.

No!

Its a SURVEY on WII usage(or pathetic lack of.......... data found by industry media data collector Enterbrain), not learjet usage, not motorcycle usage, not cocacola usage, not pepsi usage, not cellphone usage, not pc usage, not internet usage, not 360 usage, not shamppo usage, not conditioner usage, not ps3 usage, not helicopter usage, etc.

What would Wii owners be playing now? They beat Metroid, and then what?
They hardly have any good online games.

I'm here taking a break plying terrific games like Halo 3 MP, TF2, and finishing other games I havent gotten to. Unlike the Wii, there are too many Xbox 360 games to fit into the schedule.

So I think that poll in Japan is right on. Like the guy above said, the Wii is repeating some of the things that happened to the Gamecube. Too much heavy reliance on 1st party (to save their butts) and not enough attention on quality 3rd party titles. So what you get is a very spotty calender schedule with a lot of waiting and nothingness in between.

Console for the most part collect dust. This may not happen with you and your consoles, but most people who use to own a PS2, had it for a few games, a la Madden or GTA, when those game weren't out, or had been out for a while, their console collected dust. It seems that group of people now own a Wii.

And after that lets see the sheep counting backwards from 365 until the next good game is out.

Ahhhh, shades of Game Cube: another good game , another YEAR goes by until the next one.
