Nothing shocking but no more PS3 backward compatability kinda sux for future buyers
This topic is locked from further discussion.
ouch if people only have to choose from the crappy 40 gb version that sucks big timePMatt722
I'm satisfied with the 40. I still have a PS2 so no BC isn't a big deal. It's far from crappy.
how would it suck...? future buyers probly already have a ps2....and if they cared so much about BC they would've bought the ps3 by now tiger35010
You do realize the casual gamer who only buys these systems once they drop below the $200 range wont be getting the PS3 for another year atleast but the same person will have PS2 games so yes it does suck, besides keeping a bunch of system is neither practical or convenient always, my setup works perfectly right now and adding other consoles would mean disconnecting my current gen systems each time I wanted to play PS2 as all my ports are full
Haven't played a PS2 game on my 60 gig PS3 since like 2 weeks after launch. Too many good games for PS3 to choose from.
Now playing: Guitar Hero III, Orange Box, COD4, Unreal Tournament III

Y'know, in the old days you bought an SNES, and if you wanted to play NES games, you kept your NES. Now, we suddenly expect BC stretching all the way back - something the Wii only has for the GCN (the rest you re-buy on the Virtual Console) and the Xbox 360 only has for a select group of Xbox games.
The only system with true "BC" is the PC, but that assumes you keep a copy of Windows around if you go Mac.
THIS is exactly why I'm not buying a PS3. Everytime I look they are discontinuing something and bringing out something newer/cheaper. They got me once with the PS2 when I paid $299 for it and a few months later they dropped it to $199. They won't get me like that again. I will get one when it's around $250 or less. I feel better about my Xbox 360. I bought it for $399 new and it has only dropped $50 in 2 years. I've already had my money's worth with the 360.fanboy999
Believe it or not, you actually *want* your console's price to come down. Why? If your console doesn't continue to grow, and instead stagnates before reaching a large market share, then you'll find yourself on the short-end of the stick, both in console life and in exclusive software. Sony already pushed for Blu-Ray to be the winning format (which it is as of CES 2008) meaning people who bought into the PS3 won't have to re-buy for HD-DVD (unlike what will happen with Microsoft 360 HD-DVD drive owners, who will need a Blu-Ray drive to get all the big releases).
So, how would Sony growing the PS3 harm early adopters? How does getting more money, developer interest, and product available for them - making their system more in demand, harm them?

You're right about one thing I do want the price to come down. Lower it to $199 and I'm on board in a second. It's the rest that makes no sense to me. How does Sony harm early adopters? How about to the tune of $200-300!! I bought a PS3 when they first came out. When I realized I was never using it I sold it on Ebay and made my money back. If I had kept it I couldn't have recouped my money with all the price cuts. And I would really be mad everytime I saw a price cut and game included when all I had was a $500 20GB with no games included. If you don't think this sours consumers on a product then you are wrong. I'm soured to Sony's strategy and I'm glad I sold the thing and got my $500 out of it. Now I can sit back an enjoy my Wii and 360 until the day Sony stops releasing a new system every 4 months.

But think about why you sold your PS3 - you weren't using it, right? What if you had more games coming your way, more friends wanting to play you on PSN, more well, everything. At that point, does it really matter to you that the price of the PS3 has come down?
If it does, you should never buy electronics at all, because they devalue rather quickly, they're not going to appreciate in value.
Let's face it, early adopters were betting on the PS3 doing well - if it starts doing *better* and offering them more games, then they win - and if it doesn't, there's going to be very few people who want to buy their PS3 off them anyway, meaning they "lose money" and never got their "money's worth" out of the system.
-
In fact - because Sony has removed BC from the "cheap" models, the early adopters actually have the *superior model* of PS3 for the high-end consumer. Their PS3 remains "high-end" by virtue of being able to play PS1 and PS2 games upscaled. That's a notch on their belt, and a winning point for them, as far as I'm concerned. Even if Sony drops a $300 "ceramnic white" PS3, with 2 usb ports, no BC, no card-ports, and no memory card slots, onto the market - the early adopters still come out owning some of the (now rare) hardware-BC supporting PS3s.
-
Bottom Line:
The only time you care about a price drop when you already own a system is if you're thinking about selling it. If Sony's price drops bring in enough gamers (and new games) that you never have a reason to sell your PS3, then who cares what it's worth?
Its only best buy, you can still get them at other retailers.
But rumor has it that Sony is releasing a white ps3 version...maybe that will have BC?
Also rumors (unlikely) that sony is working on a 299 ps3...I doubt sony would be stupid enough to completely get rid of BC....or are they?

the thing is that you don't buy a ps3 to play ps2 games on it.
but it would be nice to have backwards compatablility.
I agree, but I think we're just dwelling in an unfortunate area, we want a cheap PS3 that does it all - but when you say "I want it for only a little bit of money" you make compromises.

It would be nice if the 360 was wireless. It would be nice if the Wii was in HD.
As long as Sony get the software out for the PS3, i can't see this being too much of a problem. Lacking certain "as standard" features hasn't caused any problems with Wii or 360.
I don't think Sony is getting rid of BC. I doubt they want to keep their PS3's sales being cannibalized by the PS2.
They are probably readying PS2 software emulation for the 40GB.
fierro316
why couldn't they just have bc from the beginning for the 40 gig the? face it, they won't bring bc to the 40 gig. i don't even think they can, there probably needs to be some hardware modification.

This anouncement came from Sony. You can tell because it says Sony has not yet said if there will be any additional models. Sony would not discontinue the 80gb at one of the largest retailers unless it was part of a larger strateic plan. The 80gb model is toast.

The 40gb model in Europe has software emulation and does not have the chip. Sony was probably not releasing the firmware to do that because they wanted people to upgrade to the 80gb model.
Remember that the 40gb model in Europe was released before the 40gb model in the US was. I'll bet 5 pennies that the 40gb in the US has the ability to play PS2 games they just havn't enabled it.

Well, you can emulate on the PSP, I think the 40GB is capable of doing it with software.
I have a feeling that the 80GB owners paid the extra 100 bucks for Motorstorm, 40 extra gigs, the card reader and USB ports; not BC. Sony will enable BC in the 40GB or release a new definitive SKU.
Amazing,
an unverified, unbeleivable, unprofessionally worded "email" with no letterhead or signature from who sent it has sent the entire world into a huge scramble battle royal over how unprofessional "sony is"...
Hey, I can make those too, see:

Haha. At least he is not playing them on a 360...like many PS3 owners do.
How sad that PS3 owners are forced to buy a 360 to play good games (or they are forced to play the crappy port).
Give this guy some credit...at least he is playing whatever is available on his PS3 (regardless of how good or bad the game/port might be).

Other than Mass Effect, what 360 exclusives are good? Just curious...
I mean...you know...Folklore, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Motor Storm, Dark Kingdoms, Warhawk, etc aren't exactly crap :-P
Plus...you know...the machine doesn't break while playing the ps3 exclusives *shrugs*
I just saw that. Good thing its only BestBuy, but many people buy consoles from there. This could be some kind of hint, but I doubt it.

Gee...since those games sold like crap, and since most did not receive great reviews (outside of site like SDF), I assumed that they were not that good at all. Silly me.
I guess in Sony land bad sales = great games.

All of them sold over 100,000 copies, which is enough for the producers to make money off them, and therefore be a success, realistically, astronomical sales means nothing towards quality, i.e: Halo 3 sold a ridiculous amount of product, but was still a generic title at the end of the day, with nothing original or inspiring going for it.
Also, Uncharted sold well over 1 mil copies...so yeah...that "flopped" too.
Resistance: Fall Of Man sold over 2 mil, as did Motor Storm...
Also...are we judging things based on sales now?
Because if so, the greatest band in the world currently is The Cast Of High School Musical,
the best movie of all time is Titanic
the best store to shop at is Walmart (based on sales per capita)
and the best video game of the current gen is...Wii Sports!

Well, since it's true bud,
check my posting history, I *was* a 360 gamer, then my elite broke, so M$ sent me another, and it broke, then M$ sent me another (each time taking around 3 weeks) and it broke...
So, you know, truth hurts?
My gf bought me the ps3, and I was skeptical at first, then I actually tried the thing, it's brilliant as a full media center solution, and the fact that it has great games, and even better games like FF XIII coming out sealed it for me...
When my Wii broke, Nintendo sent me a new one and a box to ship back the old one,
when my 360 broke, M$ sent me a box, and told me to wait.
