Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft have already basically confirmed they will be returning in the 8th generation, but do you think any new companies will venture into the fray? Or any returning veterans?

If your opinion isn't listed in the poll, please post which company your money is on.

I don't see any of them entering.

The console market is a great moneymaker if you have software to back it whether it be Xbox Live, or the Mario franchise.

I just think at this point in time the market won't allow someone to come in. Not because there's no room for more, but because the cost of entry is just so high.

I think if anyone wants to get in it'll have to be through different routes such as Apple did with their phones.

I don't think the market can bear a fourth console. I don't believe that has ever happened in my lifetime. I'm mildly surprised that three consoled have been commercially viable for 3 consecutive generations.

I think that Apple or a random company (Panasonic) might make a new console. Panasonic did just release a new handheld so that wouldn't be that random. -When do you think the next consoles will come out? - 2012? I heard Sony wont until like 2014. And the next Nintendo system will be in 3D.

it takes a lot of money to develop a new console. Apple already has the iPad/iPod touch/phone, and with all their apps, apple has its hands full already. Sega will most likely just stick to software. Now.. Google... Google might try something to expand beyond the search engine/web browser thing, but honestly, I doubt that, too. Most likely, it will just be Sony/MS/Ninty again. That said, I think Nintendo is going to step up to the hardware plate, and have a pretty high-tech (competitive) console next gen.

I don't think so. They'd lose a lot of sales if they really wanted to make it successful. Especially EA. It would sell, sure, but they make so much money as a third party developer, they'd be mad to risk their position in the gaming industry or the financial loss of a failed system.

Patcher says it takes up to a billion dollars to crack into the console market (or at least thats how much MS had to sink just to compete).

Very few companies have that kind of spare coin not to mention the connections with the electronic industry.

I chose Sega, but not cause i believe they will re-enter the console 'hardware' market but simply due me being nostalgic of the Master System, Mega Drive, Game gear & Dreamcast days :)

There were four consoles in the 5th and 6th generations, so you'd have to be pretty young not to be around then .

Did the market bear those consoles, i.e. were they commercially viable?

Three companies would normally be unsustainable (i.e. colossal failure that was Gamecube), but the Wii has managed to different enough and appealling enough to stomp the other two companies. This made it easier for people to justify owning multiple consoles, instead of latching onto a single one. If the next generation has three consoles as similiar as I expect, one of the companies is going to tank. It'll be three similiar consoles with motion controls.

Colossal failure that was Gamecube? It was only 2 million behind the Xbox in sales:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/6th_generation_consoles#Worldwide_sales_standings

And three companies are normally sustainable. There has never been fewer than three companies competing at any given time.

And the numbers would've been worse if not for the extra million sold dirt cheap once they stopped being manufactured. You could pick them up for pocket change.
