We've all heard the latest news; it seems as if Blu-Ray will become the new standard.
I have absolutely no problem with that as long as it benefits our dear game developers. However, I'm concerned about how this might affect Microsoft new Xbox. By the time Xbox "720" releases I think people will expect HD to be pretty much a standard among consoles those days. Not only for gaming reasons, but for film-watching as well.
In order to benefit the demands of the developers of the next generation, Microsoft (as well as any other console manufacturer) will probably have to abandon the DVD format and settle for a format that allows for High Definition gaming. A result of games becoming more demanding and requiring more space mostly due to the introduction of High Definition.
Microsoft can still use HD-DVD as a format to live up to these demands; however, these days it seems as if the general public want a console to be able to playback films. Therefore, HD-DVD losing the format war would be distatrous to Microsoft if the intension is indeed for the next Xbox to use a HD-DVD-drive. Unless Microsoft has another solution? Perhaps I myself have missed something, if so...fill me in.
In conclusion, I think Microsoft will need a HD disc format (to live up to the increasing demands of games), but at the same time this very format needs to be compatible with the discs of whatever format wins the format wars in order to satisfy public demand.
However, looking at Nintendo and their Gamecube, it seems as if they've been able to survive a whole generation without satisfying the latter demand. However, the sales of the console were pretty distant if compared to how the Playstation 2 (which did satisfy this demand) performed sales-wise. Still, Nintendo did rather well. But how will Nintendo perform in a generation that will probably be far more disc format dependant than the previous generation ever was?
I hope this is the correct forum to discuss this since whatever outcome of the format wars will affect the future systems in some way or another.
