I'm here to show you guys an actually fair price comparison.  I'm not going to add on crap you don't need, I'm going to show you the stuff you WILL need.  By that, I mean I'm going to add on an extra controller and one game (and for the 360 one year of Xbox Live Gold.)  I am comparing the more expensive versions of each console.

PlayStation 3:
Console ($600) + Extra SIXAXIS ($50) + Resistance: Fall of Man ($60)= $710

Xbox 360:
Console ($400) + Extra Wireless Controller ($50) + Gears of War ($60) + 1 year of XBL Gold ($50)= $560 ($510 without online)

Wii:
Console ($250) + Extra Wii Remote ($40) + Nunchuk Attachment ($20) + The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess ($50)= $360

There you have it.  An actually fair price comparison.  Please let me know if I did my math wrong or have the wrong prices.

Almost there...

PS3: 500 USD/600 USD
360: 300 USD/400 USD/480 USD
Wii: 250 USD

For us Canadians:

PS3: 700 CAD
360: 350 CAD/500 CAD
Wii: 280 CAD

(The price of the Core dropped $50 CAD, too bad that is meaningless)

Well, you could get another game if you like.  Or one of the Platinum Hits (I think they're called that) for the 360 for I think $30.  I didn't include that just to be fair.

How is it you need Xbox LIve for 360?  Thats only if you play online in the first place..

If that's the case,  then you need an HD cable for the PS3 since you should be playing on an HDTV

No it's not fair, simply because $600 is still > $400 which is still > $250.

Well, for all three I assumed you would be using online.  You can just as easily take it off.

not fair.

first compare the 500$ PS3 to the 470$(elite),they are the most similar. now,you said without addons that are not required to play the system,so i will keep out the HD-DVD drive(just to follow your rules).

now,do you only mean to use the system for one year?if not, you have to add XBOX LIVE for the hole console life cycle which should be around 5-7 years(lets say it's 5).

For the PS3, you have to add an HDMI cable which is around 20$.

so now lets caculet:

PS3:

500$+20$=520$(w/160GB HD=660$

360:

480$+250$=730$(w/HD-DVD(200$) drive=930 )

*feel free to correct my caculation or my pricing information

First off, I just did 1 year because there could possibly be a drop in price somewhere down the road and if you wanted to do the console's entire lifespan you would have to add on more games.  I was doing what you would need to get when you first buy it, including extra controllers.

Second, you don't need to compare the elite to the 500 PS3.  I'm comparing the more expensive versions of each console, excluding the Elite because it is not out yet.

True, but Wii Sports is more of a tech demo than a game.

Wrong. Wii Sports is the second best Wii game to date. Now this sound pathetic, but graphics aside, Wii Sports remains one of the most played games on the console. I should know, it's the same with my copy. Wii Sports never, ever gets old. Wii Play is a tech demo, yes. But Sports is one heck of a motivating fun game with some nice modes and excellent multiplayer. The fact that it's actually free just adds up. If I had to review them, I'd give Wii Sports a higher score than Gears of War (yes, I own both).

[/off-topic]

I bought my X360 for $400, 3 months of XBL, an extra wireless controller and Kameo included. Now that the PS3 is released, you'll find these kind of bundles everywhere.

Yes - that's much closer to what *really* happens on day one when you buy the console. I don't think I'll be buying an extra controller right away - there would be my purchases:

Xbox 360 Elite ($480) + Black Play-N-Charge ($20) + Gears of War ($40) + Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter ($20) + Xbox LIVE One Year Card ($40) = $600

I bought both of the games on sale, and I'll pick up a 13 month LIVE card on Amazon when they do their usual $40 sales on them - which are quite often. In all honesty, if I wanted the premium (20gb) Xbox 360, I could have gotten it with a year of LIVE for $400, meaning my total spent would only be $480.  I haven't bought my 360 yet so I'm still thinking about if I want to do it that way - Elite is tempting though.

The thing is I only need 400$ to take home a xbox 360 from the store. Expenses after that are optional and should and WONT be considered in the actual value of the product. Base price is all that should count not the different sku's Fact is people are going to buy the 400$ 360 and the 600$ ps3. Just because Sony released a 750$ PS2 doesn't mean the ps2 was 750$ because that wasn't the model people were buying. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/10/22/sony_to_ship_psx/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSX_(DVR)
