Heard Red orchestra 2 is pretty well done in that department, though never bothered to see it myself.

Those replies got be joking, best death animation of course goes to europhia engine powered game, implanted realistic AI nervous system in each human frame, now try to beat that.
Best death animation RDR, second best GTV IV, crysis2 did some nice job too, everything else is dated.
I always thought Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and 2 had really good death animations. Although I think those games used only ragdoll physics, whereas a game like Modern Warfare 2 uses scripted ragdoll physics, so the the death animation is pre-determined, but the limbs have physics to them. I still think R6V looks the best, I loved killing people in multi-player and watching bodies tumble down stairs and stuff like that.
Now, if you play some Dead Space there a lot of pretty wicked death sequences. They were quite creative with some of them.
some technical ones like killzone 2 have bodies that really shake with the bullets and RDR's deaths all look a bit different and grizzly in their own way.
still, i really like metroid prime's death animations too. for instance, theres something chilling about watching the power of the plasma beam as it vaporizes enemies in an instant like they were never there.

This. I intentionally let some enemies kill me just to see what death animations they bothered putting in the game.
Because in Assassin's Creed they spend ten minutes dying and monologuing("and I'd've got away with it, too if it weren't for you meddling Assassins!") before going limp. Hah hah! Just kidding- I love me some AC.How has no-one mentioned the Assassin's Creed series yet?

 No, that isn't what I meant!
I meant the death animations of normal guards. In Brotherhood especially some of the animations are just brutal.
I prefer games that don't have death animations but instead use ragdoll. Watching someone go limp as his brains splatter the wall in Hitman never gets old.

Ragdoll is always lulz with explosions :D
From the little I've played of RO2, it's pretty impressive. Could definitely be polished up in some areas, but still effective. It's a good blend of actual animations for when people are hit and writhing on the ground, bleeding out, and ragdoll for slumping against walls in a dazed sort of way.
And this is what I read, but people have been recounting their RO2 "war stories" and from what they say, the audio team should be commended. Sometimes soldiers in the game gurgle and choke on their blood or cry and call out for their mothers. That is hardcore.
Team fortress 2 hands down
so many funny kills in that game, i killed a scout using my engineers guitar taunt
