Back in 1995, if anyone remembers, the PSone was up against the two reigning champions from the 16-bit generation. It wasn't a big hit when it released. People were either buying the Saturn or waiting for the N64. The PSone had a huge boost in sales when FF VII came out. Then again when Gran Turismo and MGS came out. Three exclusives beat the competition. Sony held that lead until this generation. The PS2 sold beacuse of built-in DVD support and more great games. Sony had the least powerful of the three machines from the last generation.

Do not count Sony out of the competition, yet. FF XIII and other exclusives will sell PS3's. It won't be enough to win this generation, but I don't think that this generation will be "won". Companies will not be able to afford exclusives during this generation. Microsoft may be able to buy exclusives, or just exclusive content, but most games will be identical on both next-gen consoles (again Wii is not next-gen, just new). Sony will have in-house exclusives and Microsoft will have bought exclusives. These exclusives will determine which system you buy. When the dust finally clears, which won't be until the next generation comes out, most people will have either a 360 or a PS3. Of those two groups, half of them will have a Wii, and 10% will have all three.

More history for you:

The most expensive console has never won.

No company has ever won more than two consecutive gens.

Exactly people judge PS3 way too early (bame Microsoft). I never judge a console until its been out till atleast a year and this fall looks like its going to be awesome for PS3. The amount of quality games are gonna help PS3 boost sales.

Neither the PS1 or PS2 launched at $600. If it launched with Final Fantasy 13, MGS4, DMC 4, GT5, ect....the $600 price might not have mattered as much. However launching with only a handful of titles and then having a dry spell of software for a 5 month period was about the worst thing you could have done with a console that costs $600.

There isa limit to what people will spend on a console anyways, it doesn't help when the software is preceived as the weakest in sometime. all three (MS, SOE, Nintendo) will remember this hard lesson that SOE is learningbefore they release their next console (although I do believe Nintendo new this from the get go).

Actually, on the case of the Playstation, it was SEGA's heavily damaged consumer trust, and Nintendo's archaic ideal of remaining cartridge based, that left the third party support with no other clearer place to go than with the Playstation.

Sony's opportunism was spot on, but now that third parties have more room to move, lets see how they can handle themselves.
