Sacrifice image clarity... it's supposed to bring out more detail. Sure it could be because of shit implementation, or it could be because people complaining about it don't know how to set up their equipment right. Comparing HDR to friggin' bloom when even movies/series are implementing it is just plain stupid.

No that argument of authority is plain stupid.

Lens flare, chromatic aberration, motion blur and loads of shitty post-processing effects are ubiquitous in games. Doesn't make them good. In fact, the first thing I do is turn off all that garbage before I even start playing my games.

Those are natural effects when filmed through a camera lens, they were not invented... Game devs nabbed them because they wanted to make games more cinematic.

but a cinematic aesthetic doesn't lend itself to every game or every preference. The subjective value of these display features makes for a petty argument. They don't put the missing frames back in your 30 FPS game.

I'm not talkin' bout framerates here, just HDR.

But to be fair, some movies do HDR A LOT better than others (surely games do too). I was so excited to see Ghost in the Shell in 4k HDR blah blah blah. First, it was not true 4k ( more like a 2k) and the HDR picture was indeed very tame and washed out. It was like a missed opportunity with all the neon lights and ****. The second film was IT, not impressed. I've been more impressed with HDR in games than in movies (AssCreed Origins, Forza Horizon 3, Rise of the Tomb Raider, etc etc). The Revenant looked fantastic though.

Then I don't understand your position. HDR being aesthetically pleasing is a subjective argument. FPS (the topic of this thread) isn't because it's not purely visual.

Post-processing is also frequently used to mask certain inadequacies with a game's engine, like a blur to mask a stutter when moving the camera, or a lighting effect to wash out less optimized textures.

Just wanted to take part, when HDR was being compared to bloom lighting of all things.

And yet response times are still atrocious

1ms is atrocious? Odd because you'll be lucky to find a TV with a gaming response time of better than 12ms

https://www.rtings.com/tv/tests/inputs/input-lag

Input lag and response times are not the same tho. Try again. Rtngs does measure response times too

A TV having a superior response time to a monitor is redundant with a 30 FPS input.

OLeD Has below 1ms response time regardless of the frames per second genius

Link please, state a 'fact' present the evidence to go with it. Not saying you're wrong but until you have something backing up your statements then, as far as I'm concerned, you are talking shite.

You want to see the "input lag" response time for monitors?

Feel free to compare and you can see why monitors are better for gaming than TV's. You can but... but... about HDR all day long but it doesn't change that monitors are better gaming displays, add in Gsync or Freesync and incomparibly higher frame rates and they'll always win, regardless of bright white is or how dark black is.

Well clearly stated he's a casual so input lag means nothing to him. And yea. a "<1ms" response time IS redundant, lol.

While I fear the price, the Nvidia BFGD (Big Format Gaming Displays) coming later this year will be sweet. 4k, Gsync, 120hz (native), HDR / 1000nits , 300+ zone LED array,

Now if only the frames weren't refreshing at 33ms or higher. *sigh* poor consoles.

Oh and X1X has Freesync 2 baked in, its coming.

VRR, AALM, QFT could very well be added via Firmware as it’s not bandwidth dependent

Shame there aren't many HDR games on consoles though.

PC has access to 24 HDR Enabled games.

Try harder

”HDR is a truer more correct representation of the artwork”

”SDR suddenly looked dull by comparison”

”Gives consoles a very tangible advantage”

”HDR leaves it with a distinct advantage, over even PC”

Funny how this thread turned into a thread about HDR.

So let’s remember X1X has the best HDR Support by far

And OP himself believes HDR is the biggest gain in visual fidelity since we went from SD to HD

I know what adaptive sync is doofus, I have it. My point is the hardware shits itself aiming for 4k/60, slim pickin with games there for a reason. And that input lag chart has nothing to do with vsync.

It's amazing how stupid threads like this are just allowed to continue on this site.

4k is a resolution, fps doesn't mean Jack shit in that, or are you telling us that 4k movies arent real 4k because they're only 24 fps? Lol.

And then the other responses...wtf is wrong with the people on this site?!? It's just all stupid trolling bs.

It's meant to imply that 4k is pointless if it's locked at less than 60 fps which is actually a fair point in some regards.

Claims thread is stupid yet adds a stupid reply. This is a gaming forum and no one here is talking about movies. Frames mean a lot in games, especially fast motion ones.

@dxmcat: 30 fps is fine for a lot of games, and acting like fps means anything when it comes to 4k is a f**king joke and trolling. A 4k game running at 30 fps is still a 4k game, just as much 4k as a 60 fps game, or a 90 fps game, or a 120 fps. FPS doesn't mean squat when it comes to resolution. Again, stupid thread is stupid.

So at last count (cause this is all you seem to care about at the moment).

PC has access to 24 HDR Enabled games. With another 3 on the list to be released.

https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Special:Ask/-5B-5BCategory:Games-5D-5D-20-5B-5Bhigh_dynamic_range::true-5D-5D-20OR-20-5B-5Bhigh_dynamic_range::hackable-5D-5D/-3FDeveloped-20by/-3FPublished-20by/-3FRelease-20date/-3FAvailable-20on/-3Fhigh_dynamic_range/format%3Dtemplate/limit%3D100/template%3DFeature-2Frow/introtemplate%3DFeature-2Fintro/outrotemplate%3DFeature-2Foutro

Xbox - 8 wasn't it? (I don't have that link).

Try 52

If you say so,

So at last count (cause this is all you seem to care about at the moment).

X1X not PC

https://www.windowscentral.com/all-xbox-one-x-enhanced-games 33 games 4k and HDR

Who doesn't enjoy some cricket at 4K and HDR? Boy, I'm excited!

Such a big win

Your list shows 48 4k/HDR Games, and 57 HDR Games.

Lets not forget OP thinks HDR is the biggest leap in visual fidelity since SD to HD. He doent believe the leap from HD to UHD is as big.

Ofc HD to UHD isnt that big if you are still sitting at the same 10' or so from your screen on a couch. (Insert viewing distance / res chart here thats been posted 10000x times

I'd stand by that comment...if all things are equal (effects/fps/etc), I'd take 1080p/hdr over 4k/no hdr. It's a great feature. The games on pc with it on I can't play without. And I guess there are a few console games with hdr that aren't on pc?

That being said...this thread flipped to hdr from 4k and the pixel information. I'd also stay with my claim that the bifurcated definition of 4k between pc/console gamers exists. 4k/60fps/hdr is GREAT, and the consoles just aren't up to snuff to handle that for the majority of titles (I think Forza 7 does on the x, yeah? Though I'm not sure if it uses the same in game settings as pc on ultra...but then on pc I take of blur/dof for a better image).

It's funny, they can't live without a better visual representation. but can live playing on a box that limits pretty much everything including visual representation.

Gotta shill hard i guess.

As you all argue about pixels and power. The Nintendo Switch the weakest of all consoles just collected another AAAA. Keep arguing system wars 4K@60 is so damn important. ROFLMAO!

Ah so you have a 1080 Ti or a Titan Pascal? because those are only cards that are going to get almost twice as many frames as X1X at similar settings.

ill stick to X1X’s superior HDR Support regardless tho

Resolution, HDR, graphic fidelity, etc. really don't mean shit unless the frame rate is 60fps or more.

Thank you, that wasn't hard was it? Do you have a link so as I can see the entire table/article and not just the cropped image?

Now what's your take on the higher input lag and low frame rates (the actual thread topic)? We'll not go into being forced to use DoF and motion blur, just yet.

To me it’s not as important/satisfying as contrast ratio, color saturation, response times, HDR, and 3D Audio.

which is why I game on an OLED and ditched my PC for a X1X

This thread is so pointless. Steam/valve already confirmed 99.999999% of PC gamers are using mid grade 1080p PC’s at best.

Most of you guys don’t have a $5000 Beast PC that can run 4K at 60FPS let alone 30FPS.

Consoles win.
