Exclusive Sports titles.....Imagine if Madden was PS3 exclusive....Even if Sony sold the PS3s at $700 pricepoint the 360 wouldnt even had a chance.....add FIFA/PES to that and nothing can resist that....Sports games sales just own everything except WoW....So no need for mushing millions into FPS (Killzone2) just dish out enough cash to have a well established sports title as an exclusive and BAM! youve got the market share.

MS would get their own sports franchises to compete with them, by hook or by crook.

The PS3 has it's own sports titles, except for football. So no, not really.

They had one. This is Football. It started on PS1 and died off on PS2. I actually liked it. It was nice alternative to PES, World League Soccer, Actua Soccer and FIFA.

Yah, so Sega created their own dev team for sports games that put out higher quality games than EA.

Now, if what you're saying is that one company just needs to own every sports game franchise, and no other console gets them then I'd agree it could work, but I doubt MS, or Sony would just shrug it off if the other company had a monopoly on all the sports games.

MLB '09 the show sold pretty well last month, so you may be on to something there, but Madden will never be exclusive, they sell a kagillion copies on every platform so there is no need

PES was exclusive for two first editions on PS2....Sony was not smart enough to have this on PS3....Instead they had the useless (in sales) MGS4 from KONAMI....PES is killer in sales compared to MGS...

Exactly....The Xbox is winning because of the headstart plus the huge amounts of cash that M$ pushed behind it.....cash that SEGA was never in position to provide. Of course if Sony managed somehow to have Madden/FIFA/PES as exclusives M$ better just give the Xbox360 for free...none would care about it.

There is no monopoly in that...None stops you from offering more cash....the one who gives the most wins. And you dont need all sports just Madden/FIFA would just obliterate the competition.

What a platform needs is dependent on the generation. Last gen it was the games. Before that, technology (many will disagree here). Now, its community. The reason Microsoft is doing so well, along with nintendo is everyone has one. Microsoft connects the hardcore and even casual friends. This gen revolves around community. Since Microsoft got that head start it created a fanbase that has kept momentum going. That's my 2 cents

Perhaps if a console had precured exclusivity from a major developer like EA for sports titles when the gen first started - then it would make a difference. Talking about this now is stupid. If a company decided to go exclusive now for example, they'd alienate a vast majority of console owners and in turn their market... which means less money.

Most companies, particularly large, wealthy ones, don't enjoy committing financial suicide.

I wonder why they haven't made a deal with EA for some kind of PC/360 baseball game.

I guess those $50 millions would have oiled the taste of EA....the money which M$ could have given for Madden or FIFA....instead of a useless GTA DLC....And finansial suicide? Oh you have no idea how bad people want Madden/FIFA/PES.....no idea.

I would say fail considering the original xbox and dreamcast had their own sports franchises but then again one of reasons dreamcast failed was the lack of support of companies such as EA.

See, now you're assuming that people can magically afford what they want. As if all of those gamers who purchased the Wii or even the 360 are necessarily able or willing to fork out the money for a PS3. Even if Sony had given EA $50 million for exclusivity, that wouldn't give consumers the buying power to purchase a PS3, just because they want the sports games that are on it.
