Its been talked about before but it has been a while.

Should Nintendo go third party? Everybody knows that the only games Nintendo has for them is their Mario, Zelda, Metroid standard games.

Highly unlikely I know, but it seems that with the wii2 its going to be relying a lot more on gimmicks right from the start to sell consoles.

Everybody that knows next to nothing about Nintendo, sure.

All us other people who actually know and play what Nintendo releases can probably agree its enough to keep pumping out handhelds and consoles.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: NO! Nintendo's better off leaving gaming (taking their IP's with them) and moving onto something else (like on how they moved on from past things such as Hanafuda cards and Love Hotels) if that happens

I wouldnt care less. I dont feel like missing anything major as racing ( mario kart ) or as platformer ( smg ) or as fighting game ( SSM ) or as RPG ( SM rpg ) and the list goes on. I wouldnt buy these games even if they were on PC or something. The only Nintendo games it got my interest since ATARI 2600 era ( when i started playing with consoles) were 2. Zelda Wind Waker and Resident Evil remake. 1 is first party , second is not. So to me ... dont really care.

Nintendo systems tend to be great so I'd be unhappy if Nintendo went 3rd party.

Perhaps compared to the PS2, but they've still made a huge amount of profit from the PS3 so it would be stupid of them to not continue.

I would hate to see Sony leaving the trio but I can't see them recovering from the PSN hacking.

Not likely. Sony isn't some exclusively video game company like Nintendo or Sega... they will not go multiplat just because the PS3 started off with a few bad years.

Their video game division is profitable again. And even with all the money initially lost on the PS3, internally they no doubt credit the system with winning the HD optical disc format platform war.

'Analysts believe, however, that Sony will recoup its $3billion-plus investment eventually. Richard Hooper, an analyst with Screen Digest, said: "It is hard to estimate precisely what royalties Sony will generate, but we believe that they will be able to recoup far more than $3 billion over the lifetime of Blu-ray. It's worth it." Without PlayStation 3, Sony would would have been in deep trouble.' [link]

That's through movie royalties alone.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: NO! Nintendo's better off leaving gaming (taking their IP's with them) and moving onto something else

nintendoboy16

As a Fan of Nintendo games, Nintendoboy, why would you want videogames without Nintendo's influence?

I'm a fan since before NES existed and I don't wish that on Nintendo.

As a GAMER looking at this hypothetical situation, why would you want less games on the market for gamers to play?

How about this...Forget everyone else, why wouldn't you want Nintendo to make games in the future for you to play?

Even if the Nintendo 3rd Party games were somehow not as great as they were previously (which given the talent at Nintendo, I doubt), I'm sure Nintendo would still put out good games for you to play.

I can tell you, if Xbox, Playstation, or whoever left the console market, I would still want more games to play...I can't imagine wishing GAMING would be smaller, or die off. I may not like a lot of SEGA games compared to their yesteryears, but guess what? I'm still glad they are around today, because I still play SEGA games. SEGA gave home to Platinum, and gave me Vanquish and Bayonetta for instance. I'm glad SEGA is still around, even if they aren't what they were.

Sounds to me that MORE GAMES for a HOBBY I Enjoy seems like a great option, I don't see the plus side of wishing NINTENDO would leave my hobby of choice. Obviously, I don't want this hypothetical to play out, as I'm a fan of Nintendo consoles and ideas...but If forced to answer this question, I can't imagine wishing NINTENDO to leave gaming.

I don't think nitendo leaving would hurt the idusutry alot , sony and microsoft would just get companies to make more causual games, and make an appeal to the causual audience

That's a fine belief, I'm sure that is one scenario that could play out. With Nintendo's incredible success with the Wii/DS, I don't see Nintendo going 3rd Party...but I'm not a fortune teller, so your prediction sounds fine to me.

I don't follow where you are going with quoting me though.

I was just answering the TC's question, : What if Nintendo went 3rd Party?

Then I saw someone that felt Nintendo should leave gaming instead of wanting Nintendo 3rd Party, and I wanted to understand why they would want Nintendo to disappear from Gaming, especially if they are a Nintendo fan due to Nintendo's GAMES.

Nintendo is Nintendo because of the Videogames they created...I would never wish for Nintendo's involvement in our wonderful GAMING world to be dissolved.

SOME NINTENDO is better than NO NINTENDO. :P

I love how hearing rumors somehow makes everyone an expert.... All we've heard is rumors... some more solid or likely than others.

Yet TC is claiming Ninty is launching their next console relying on gimmicks....???? Anyone else see a problem with this?

It's only a month til E3 why dont we all just cool it and wait for specifics, before we call it innovative or gimmicky or "OHEMGEE! Ninty haZ 1 DA U-kNEE-V3RsE"

Concerning Third Party... Ninty has gone on record if they are ever forced out of the hardware game they would no longer continue to produce software. Could they be successful just doing software? Ya... but it would mean CONSIDERABLE downsizing of the company. And a world without Nintendo Systems is not one I want to be a part of, thank you very much.

Don't see why this would or should happen, as all their recent hardware has been incredibly successful. I guess if it did I'd rather play Zelda on ps/xbox than not play Zelda at all.

That's how I see it. :P

I don't see Nintendo going 3rd Party at all, especially looking at their success with the DS and Wii...but In the extremely unlikely event of this 3rd Party Nintendo occurance, I would much rather play ZELDA/Mario/Metroid/etc. in the future than NEVER AGAIN.

What can I say, I'm a Nintendo fan. :P

It's more likely that PS3 was Sony's last console than Nintendo going 3rd party. Why aren't we discussing that?

Also, Video gaming = Nintendo.

So many things wrong wit the OP... 1) Nintendo is just about Mario, Metroid and Zelda? What about Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Super Smash Bros., Star Fox, F-Zero, Golden Sun, Advance Wars, Pikmin, Kirby, Kid Icarus, Donkey Kong, Pilotwings... Yeah, *only* Mario, Zelda and Metroid. 2) Nintendo going third party rumors were back in the Gamecube days, when they were in a very tenuous position financially speaking (though even then, the success of their games, Pokemon, and the Gameboy left them with more than enough funds). After the massive success of the Wii and the DS, they aren't going anywhere now. It's company that's more than a hundred years old, older than Microsoft and Sony put together. They know how to stay successful in business. 3) We know *nothing* about their new console, and you're already branding it a gimmick? Way to hate, dude. If you want to play their games so badly, buy their systems, plain and simple.

well its a what if question. so what if they did? well we would be left 2 consoles that are basically the same and not much in the way of new ideas. future console innovation will just be "make it faster". we need ninty to keep the others thinking outside the box a bit and think about how we interact with our games (which at the end of the day is one of the most fundimental things that makes a game a game). a part of me would like to see them go 3rd party simply because i would love to see what they could do with nigh on unlimited hardware resources (screw the PS3 and 360....PC please). i would love to see nintys internal studios and the likes of retro flex their muscles on what would be a very new control scheme for them and masses of processing power. they have produced incredible results with the wii. but a much larger part of me thinks thats complete madness....its their unique hardware with its quirks and such like that allows ninty to do what they do best (no not milking the customer...making cracking games. :P). the console market would be a much less interesting place without them thats for sure.

lol @ the only good games that come out of nintendo are only mario bros zelda and metroid your so wrong on so many different levels if that were the case wii wouldnt have sold so darn good and it continues to chug in sales-may not be leadingany more but that dont stop that big 90 m from growing to the 100 m

heres a good organized list of wii exclusives to back my statements up

  1. wii sports resort /wii sports-their free so why not
  2. donkey kong country returns
  3. metroid other m
  4. metroid prime3/trillogy
  5. zelda
  6. excite truck
  7. excite bots trick racing
  8. warioland shake it
  9. kirby epic yarn
  10. warioware inc2
  11. marioparty 8
  12. super paper mario
  13. nsmb
  14. mario galaxy 1
  15. mariogalaxy 2
  16. mariokart
  17. super smash bros brawl
  18. wii party
  19. wii play
  20. wii fit
  21. wii fit plus
  22. super mario strikers charged
  23. super mario sluggers
  24. mario sports mix
  25. zelda sws
  26. punchout wii
  27. sin and punishment 2 star successer

upcoming-besides sws

pandoras tower

kirby dreamland wii

wii play motion

so with that said nintendo wont go third party as long as it systems continue to provide profit-see 3ds wii , snes nes gb line ,

it will continue to make systems ,

the only reason sega went is because unlike nintendo they sold their systems at a loss

and never had the games to sell its systems after the only success they had-genesis and sms , they failed to deliver

the nintendo systems even those such as n64 gamecube have always sold enough so that they made profit , remember this before you ask another what if

nintendo wont drop out because they dont sell more systems then sony or ms even if ngp sold more then 3ds that dont mean nintnedo failed, and that dont make 3ds a commercial failure 3ds has already done what it supposed to for nintnedo -make profit

and has the games to sustain a 5 yr life cycle or more

and you dont want nintendo to drop out im being very serious about this

if they were to leave iwata said-if we drop out of the console race we drop out entirely we dont go third party

so if they left youd be pretty darn disappointed ,,not only will us real gamers who care about gameplay more then graphic but you so called gamers who care about online multiplayer and graphics over anything else you will suffer the consiquences for not supportign one of the pioneers in gaming ,

when they leave so does innovation and there goes any chance more gamers will join it will continue to grow in price (imagine if you only had ms and sony duking it out)
prices will only get higher not lower seeing as how 360 and ps3are still at a steep 300 and are even in sales chances are if nintendo were gone now , ms andsony will only release high priced consoles with horse power under the hood-this is not good for developers as you saw earlier this gen -midway free radical factor 5 and some others have closed thier shop, due to financial meltdown!

and this will happen more frequent when theres only 2 high priced monsters on the market instead of having 1 that is easy on devs budget and on consumers as well

nintendo has always kept its consoles cheaper ,if wii 2 ends up at 300 it will be the first console to ever hit the 300 mark from nintendo thats a big punchmark because they are able to produce a high power system for acheaper price if not equal to a 5 yr old ps3 and still come out at a 300 price range unfortnatelly if they leave

gaming will be drowning it will continue to grow in price and if this gen isnt a indication sony and ms will continue to support a 15 dollar map pack for a 60 dollar gameif not more kind of dlc that only takes up our banks , and adds little to the experience

remember this to

the less competition -the more chances of price increase and less chance for a price drop and again no innovation ,youll be playing games with even less single player less value but the bummer is your gonna pay the same price or more , for this

you willnot be seeing announcments of any price drop-deal or anything of a sort unless a gaming crash happens , and nintendo wont be around to save it that time so remember that be careful what you wish for!

Nintendo games wouldn't sell on other systems so they should NOT go 3rd party.

prices will only get higher not lower seeing as how 360 and ps3are still at a steep 300 and are even in sales chances are if nintendo were gone now , ms andsony will only release high priced consoles with horse power under the hood-this is not good for developers as you saw earlier this gen -midway free radical factor 5 and some others have closed thier shop, due to financial meltdown!

and this will happen more frequent when theres only 2 high priced monsters on the market instead of having 1 that is easy on devs budget and on consumers as well

nintendo has always kept its consoles cheaper ,if wii 2 ends up at 300 it will be the first console to ever hit the 300 mark from nintendo thats a big punchmark because they are able to produce a high power system for acheaper price if not equal to a 5 yr old ps3 and still come out at a 300 price range unfortnatelly if they leave

gaming will be drowning it will continue to grow in price and if this gen isnt a indication sony and ms will continue to support a 15 dollar map pack for a 60 dollar gameif not more kind of dlc that only takes up our banks , and adds little to the experience

remember this to

the less competition -the more chances of price increase and less chance for a price drop and again no innovation ,youll be playing games with even less single player less value but the bummer is your gonna pay the same price or more , for this

you willnot be seeing announcments of any price drop-deal or anything of a sort unless a gaming crash happens , and nintendo wont be around to save it that time so remember that be careful what you wish for!

Perhaps compared to the PS2, but they've still made a huge amount of profit from the PS3 so it would be stupid of them to not continue.

You mean the profit they just lost and are now back to where they started?

Its been talked about before but it has been a while.

Should Nintendo go third party? Everybody knows that the only games Nintendo has for them is their Mario, Zelda, Metroid standard games.

Highly unlikely I know, but it seems that with the wii2 its going to be relying a lot more on gimmicks right from the start to sell consoles.

I will make gamespot a deal. The day that happens I will send all accounts of gamespot (on that day.) $50 dollars. Every single member on the site. Even the staff. I will send $50 dollars to all users no matter how long it takes. That is how happy I will be if that were to happen. I would even ask GS to put up the giveaway on the front page. Maybe even $60.

That's through movie royalties alone.

basically this

Why *would* you be happy if that happened?

MS software? They're the worst 1st party exclusive wise; More like MS Online.

It makes sense for Nintendo to go third party. They make awesome games, but out-of-date hardware. Microsoft is almost the opposite :P

That's not how games are classified.

Mario Kart is its own IP and has nothing to do with the Mario franchise.

Where would Sony & Microsoft get their ideas?
