I'm personally of the opinion that NO GAME should ever get a perfect review. There's always something more a game can do. I'm not saying that reviewers have to find every little flaw and cry about it, but I just think calling a game perfect is stupid. GTA4, that was a great game, but it's gameplay still was filled with problems. It was a major step up over the previous games, and it's multiplayer really didn't have the lasting appeal that I thought it would. MGS4, was also a great game, but it too had some minor gameplay flaws. These flaws are nothing worth making a big deal out of, I just think games can always be better. Am I the only one that feels this way about AAAA reviews? I wasn't meaning to bash any of the games I just mentioned, I liked both of them, but I don't think they deserved 10s.

According to Gamespot THPS3 is better than every Halo game, every Blizzard game, every Metal Gear game, every Rare game and pretty much every other game ever.

iirc it scored 10/10, unless i'm wrong and it scored 11/10 then it didn't score better than mgs4.

This is a huge issue with scored reviews in general. Whatever score a game gets, its value will just depreciate over time. Games that got a 10 a decade ago have less features that even a basic 7.5 game now might have. 10 games then are probably less compelling than 9.0 games are now.

Every game given a ten is overrated. Even Ocarina of Time.

Also, the reason why Tony Hawk 3 has a better score than some newer games is because it's better for its time. If you compare them now, the newer game is better, obviously.

Edit:

When even bother having a scoring system if it's impossible for any game to get the top score? This argument doesn't and has never made any sense.

They did get a 10, but this is strictly the opinion of 1 reviewer from 1 website. Noone said us gamers have to feel the same way, and many of us don't. Like the above poster said, look at a multitude of reviews to get a better idea.

I probably like a much larger percentage of games that score in the 8s better than games that score in the 9s. MGS4, The Halos, Gears, God of wars, a lot of the Final Fantasy games, none of them are really that great. A couple of them are down right boring.

agreed, and if 10 can't be reached, then 9.5 will be the best score, same rules apply so games won't be able to achieve that and it goes on until every game get's a 0. i tend to watch the video reviews from ign, gametrailers and here, rather than looking at scores.

This is why I proposed that the reviewers return to the game and play it again a month or so later and if still feels like that score then they will keep it, but if it doesnt it should be subject to change.

  1. 10/10 on Gamespot is not "perfect"
  2. No game ever strives to be "perfect"
  3. When you have a rating system, you design it so that you will utilize all the scores at one point, regardless of their meaning
  4. If you don't use all the scores in a system, and say that "no game can be perfect" you create a paradox in which the highest score, having become unattainable literally becomes useless; thus, making the second highest score (in GS's case, a 9.5/10), the "highest" on the scale, which in turn should fall under the same regulations as the 10, meaning that since no game is "perfect," then having it achieve the "highest" score, it too becomes useless. Repeating this logic down the chain until you reach 1.0/10 and it too is removed due to being the "best" possible score.

If you don't give anything your highest possible score, at least once in a while, you create a paradox that undermines the entire meaning of your scoring system. Gamespot's scores are the opinions of those particular reviewers. They are not an objective fact that determines the quality of a game... but merely the amount of enjoyment a reviewer got from a game. You aren't required to agree with them, nor are you not entitled to your own opinion. Just remember, since no game is perfect, and 10/10, 100/100, or A+ does not mean "pefect," but "the best of the best for that particular point in time," you don't need to complain about games getting 10/10's, whether you agree with them or not.

Stringerboy

But it has pacing issues and a poorly written/acted plot. So it doesn't deserve a 10 :?

Completely disregarding the current GS rating system - there are AAAA games out there. Very, very few. Yes every game could do more, but if there is absolutely nothing wrong with what it does do (besides any minor annoyances) it is a perfect game.

RobbRipken

there you go. the flaws you talk about in a AAAA game do not detract from what makes the game great which is why they do not take it away from the score.

i actually think more games deserve AAAA, such as CoD4 and ES: Oblivion, simply because they offer such immersive gameplay experiences...

reviews scores are overated, because i would have giving mgs4 an 8 and gta4 a 7 halo3 a 8 and many otehr highly rated games nowhere neer what they get on alot of sites if only we were back in the mid 90s where reviews were actually consistant.

umm you can't really compare games cross genre and such, regardless of score. also, AAAA does not mean perfect, it just means either revolutionary, extremely polished, etc.

Just because tony hawk 3 got a 10 doesnt mean that its better than every other game that didnt get one.... Tony hawk set out to do a certain goal and achieved it pretty much flawlessly, that was a near perfect skating game for the time it came out. Thats how you review a game you base it off of how well the goal of the game devs. was achieved, you cant compare tony hawk to other games.

MGS4 was NOT overrated. GTA4 was though. Some games shouldn't have gotten a ten.... Tony... Hawk.... But I guess at the time that game was pretty spectacular
