Absolute Best Game Endings

What's your absolute best game ending that, once the credits rolled you felt this game was worth every cent you spent and every hour you put in it. For me:

Crackdown 1: an imperfect, perfect game to me and it ends with you finding out you helped the bad guys the entire time and screwed the city over. You were lied to and manipulated the entire game. Should have been a great set-up for part 2. Sadly, 2 sucked

Phantasy Star 2: Great single player campaign, beat Darkside, and it feels like you saved the entire galaxy

Halo 3: Felt epic

Mass Effect 1 and 2: Both were stellar endings IMHO

Mass Effect 2 getting Shepard's rally the troops speech, then proceeding to kick some major Reaper ass.

Walking Dead-Surprise ending

Bayonetta's Epilogue. That ending is all kinds of Crazy ! But yeah Mass Effect 2's Suicide Mission wasn't Half Bad either....

I actually liked the ending of FFXIII-2.

I thought the game was just ok but the ending made me really enjoy it. I like time travel stories and how generally, the more you fight to change the future, the more you create the situations required to make said future happen. I thought it was pretty great that things seem happy and then enemies start coming, your character dies, and the apocalypse begins like, "yeah you know how it seemed crazy impossible for two teenagers with attitudes to save the world? You were right. It is. You lose, game over."

I guess some would feel like they wasted their time but I enjoyed everything before that so I would never have said that and the ending was so not the standard game ending where everything goes perfect for everyone that it really upped my opinion on the game.

The original Bioshock Borderlands and ME3 :O no doubt about it..... bruhahahahah

Serially... Yeah, Halo 3 was epic.

Resident Evil 2- Finally escaping the city, especially in scenario 2.

Halo 3- I think everyone knows what happens.

999, not even close. VLR is pretty awesome as well.

MGS3 had a great ending

Prince of Persia had a nice, poignant ending that the DLC fucked up.

The Walking Dead's was predictable since episode one but it made me miss the characters rather than feel emotion.

Spec Ops The Line had a great idea and good execution of an ending provided you didn't know the source material's ending and you got past a few story inconsistencies with the ending.

BioShock Infinite had a cool ending. Almost made up for the rest of the game being boring. Another game did it first but Infinite wasn't bad.

Uncharted 2 deserves a shout out for its unabashed movie-inspired adventure ending on the same note.

I liked The Last of Us' ending. The concept was excellent and the way they sprinkled small details into the CG was so believable.

1. Half Life series , specially episode 2 (Half Life 3 confirmed .?)
2. Mass Effect 1 and 2 (ME 1 = "Best game evaa" . ME 2 = "Can't wait for ME3" . Both endings blew me away)
3. Alan Wake (That cliffhanger still makes me want Alan Wake 2 :-( )
4. Crysis 1 (Great soundtrack , mind blowing visuals and epic boss battle . No QTE crap)
5. Spec Ops : The Line (Great Writing and excellent main protagonist)
6. Amnesia : The Dark Decent (Going through all those nightmares was worth it , in the end)
7. Dino Crisis 2 (Great CGI outro . Still want Dino Crisis 4)
8. The Witcher 2 (Felt like end to an epic and long journey . Specially in Enhanced Edition)
9. FEAR (One of the best FPS ever created and excellent Realtime storytelling)
10. Total War Shogun 2 (Doesn't have any fix ending and you make your own story . But after series of challenging battles and management when I finally finished the campaign , it was very satisfying )

I really loved the ending to Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

Halo 2

I have to add:

Bioshock 1 - great, great ending - felt like the character's journey was worthwhile

Grandia - Epic

Lunar 2 (Sega CD) - great ending

CoD: Modern Warfare - loved the campaign and the end. was a thrill ride throughout.

MGS3. The ending, the music, everything...

BioShock stories always end on something awesome. They feel like true story games so that's satisfying. TLOU anti-climax is pretty good just for the fact it's nothing of great spectacle and more thought provoking. Spec Ops the line is a definite good one for the story games too. Someone mentioned FEAR 1 but I'd have to put FEAR 2 above that, mind bending.

Funny enough enough... I though the ending to The Last Of Us was absolutely terrible. It couldn't help but taunt me one more time with another walking section !

Surprised to see so much love for Halo 3's ending. I feel like all the Halo games have such lame endings.

This gen Ryse had a great ending. The last sequence was epic.

@slaves: Aww man, you should have played the superior game first.

Still, get around to 999 if you can despite VLR spoiling it. VLR had some great, twisty endings too, goddamn the real ending was really good despite ZE3 not being certain.

At the time, I really liked the ending for Final Fantasy VIII.

To the Moon had a great ending.

The song at the end of Portal 1.

No One Lives Forever 2 ending was fun, also need more Kate Archer.

Suicide Mission in ME2 was pretty awesome especially making it out with your whole crew, felt really rewarding achieving that. The ending for season 1 of TWD was completely unexpected for me but was cool twist.

Last of Us has the best ending in almost 10 years. Right up there with HL2: Episode 2.

A truly haunting and epic ending. One for the ages.

999 and VLR's endings were some kind of incredible. As were silent Hill 2's (and even the Born from a Wish side story was very affecting) and Silent hill Shattered Memories's. Also, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Wind Waker all had really great endings.

As others have mentioned, 999 and virtues last reward. Also bioshock 1's good ending was very satisfying.

Another game I have to mention is Nier ending D. Although it is a controversial ending as to what it does, and im sure some people were left disappointed, to me, it was a very mind blowing ending I doubt any other game would ever attempt, and left me bewildered. But afterwards, I realized just how complete it felt.

I'm playing through silent hill 2 right now, and wanted to ask if it is like 999 where you must complete all the endings to get the full experience of the story?

Telltale's The Walking Dead: Season 1. Such an emotional ending to such a great story, the first and only time a game has made me cry. "Keep that hair short Clem".

@Yoshi9000: I don't believe so. Each ending is its own thing, although I believe there is a "right" one. Let me put it this way... I have beaten it once (working on a second play through right now) and the ending I got, while a bit unsatisfactory, was still a complete story. As in I understood everything that happened in the narrative.

I've enjoyed the endings for every Resident Evil game I've beaten, except for Operation Raccoon City. Those endings were lame.

and I have to say TWD though, Lee died and Clem was crying :'(....but still filled with so many emotions

1. MGS 3 Epic encounter and fight to the death with the Boss lady.

2. Bioshock Infinite Several of her drown you to death after saving her and taking her out of there.

3. The Last of Us The way Joel acts and his choice to let the world die & goes off with Ellie.

I guess these are more surprise/best endings.

Dark Souls deserves a mention

Absolutely Modern Warfare's ending. That was flipping fantastic.
