Despite the commercial success of AC Shadow, Ubisoft, according to some reports, they had spent 300M to make it.

Which basically makes AC Shadow another Concord budget-wise. Therefore, they need to sell at least 7M copies to break even. Meaning to please investors, they need to sell at least 14M+ copies.

So far Ubisoft managed to sell around 2M copies (because reported 2M players), but will they reach 14M units any time soon?

@ivangrozny: I read that making the game as well as marketing for this game was upwards of 400 million. Similar to Star Wars Outlaws. 2 million Players is not 2 million copies sold. The game is included with UBI+ subscription service and I'm willing to bet half the players that are interested are just going to sub for the the month and then cancel. Then you have people that were already subbed to ubi+ playing it. If they had sold 2 million copies they would be bragging about that, looks good to investors. Most likely the game hasn't broke 1 mill in actual sales. It will eventually, just like Star wars Outlaws eventually did as well as Dragon Age Veilguard. (Both of those games are considered commercial failures due to their budgets) Shadows will be in that same camp. Ubisoft is cooked.

This is the way capitalism should work, I guess. Make a product, hope it sells, if it does great, if not oh gee that's too bad, guess you go out of business and the talent and resources are used on more deserving endeavors.

Video games cost too much to make these days, there needs to be a lesson to learn here that less is more. Maybe scale things back. Stop hunting whales and look instead for something sustainable.

The only really sad thing about Ubisoft potentially closing up shop is that the IP's will likely get auctioned off to worse corporations.

Then again, not exactly hard to come up with new IPs. Instead of Ghost Recon, how about we make a new franchise called...Specter Force? Phantom Team? Spooky Specialists!

These people...gotta learn to read and do research and come to their own opinions.

Need to stop listening to these Youtubers. And yes I know there are some good resources on Youtube but let's be honest you folks mainline the people you like and find entertaining for the most part.

I'm not super familiar with him, but I did watch a bit of some video where him and his bros were talking a lot of shit about Avowed and their complaints seemed kind of insane. I didn't watch much of it, but it was enough to make me avoid his videos (which youtube now keeps suggesting to me).

Yeah, Ubisoft has had such a bad year that Shaddows probably needs to sell some ridiculous numbers to keep the company going. I don't know, it seems like they got creatively stagnant to the point you could just say "it's a Ubisoft game" and everyone knows exactly what you are talking about. But I can't even entirely fault them. They did try a few things that didn't follow the formula, like Lost Crown and Sparks of Hope, but those bombed too.

Not sure what happens next, or even what I want to happen next. Layoffs suck, but they can't realistically maintain their current size.

Capitalism also penalizes inefficient companies. Apparently a lot of what is driving up the cost of some games is mismanagement. The people who are supposed to be in charge of company resources aren't doing their job.

Most alarmingly, games are growing more expensive because of rampant mismanagement — because of companies chasing trends, making bad bets and lacking a clear creative vision. Inefficient workflows, technological shifts and insecure executives can all be the cause of wasted time, which equates to higher budgets.

There’s the feature that gets canceled because the CEO’s teenage kid didn’t like it, or the level that everyone knows is going to get axed but that they all have to keep working on because the cancellation hasn’t officially been communicated yet. Or maybe it already has been canceled and nobody told the audio team.

👎Thumbs down for Assmungo. Ubisoft's woes go beyond any one game saving them though. It really just comes down to poor management and failing to properly nurture their IPs beyond AC. A lot of new IPs they introduced were met with a resounding "meh" while Splinter Cell seems to remain permanently MIA. Even Division 3 seems to be taking its time to get here... *shrug*

That's actually why I don't completely care for capitalism. Some of the stuff I really like isn't always popular. I shudder to think of the anime industry if we only had mainstream Shounen/Seinen series or the slop Isekai series. Same with manga. I remember a company agreeing to license "My Girlfriend's Child". Even if they know it won't sell a bunch of copies, simply due to the fact that it's an award-winning manga series.

To be fair, Ubisoft mismanaged that pirate game and a few other releases so badly that it's pretty easy for anyone to say "they might be in trouble if their flagship title doesn't sell well".

Seeing how Chinese people are flocking to Black Myth Wukong, Ubi should focus on making an Assassin's Creed game set in China, preferably with Japanese soldiers as the enemies.I guarantee it will sell like hot cakes.
