I was interested to see IGN's reaction to Playstation Home because I've been thinking about getting a PS3 after xmas and was thinking Home might be kind of neat to try out. However, it seems like Home is just a big waste of time according to IGN's PLAYSTATION team. it's good to see their not biased at least.

"Chris' Take

"If I had to describe Home in one word, it would be "boring". Yep, I'm bored to death with Home. "

"Really, if I felt like having conversations with people I don't know, I would much rather do it on a message board somewhere. "

Greg's Take

"PlayStation Home is dumb. "

"Seriously -- as it stands now -- this is a waste of everyone's time. "

Jeff's Take

"Home is perhaps one of the biggest mistakes that Sony has ever made. Plagued with bugs, delays and a significant lack of content, this is a gimmick, a boondoggle that was gambled on by Sony to drag users away to a virtual space that would hopefully compete with the popularity of the Nintendo Miis and the large amount of content delivered weekly to the Xbox Live Marketplace."

Ouch, I realize that this is still the Beta so Home is not 100% yet, however, I think it's safe to say that Home is not the revolution sony was looking for.

According to IGN... I could have told you that...

Plus it's worse then Dumb and Pointless... If you want nice virtual objects to make your home look nice you get nickel and dimed for them... Want a virtual chair to virtually sit in, that's .99 cents...

And rumor says hacked.

Rumortoid: Sony's Home hacked screenshot

Don't put too much stock into this one, because... well, we haven't seen it yet.

If the rumors are true, then one user has successfully hacked into PlayStation Home's servers, letting him upload, download, and delete files at his leisure. StreetskaterFU is the person said to have come up with the method to hack in.

Engadget says that a PS3hax forum member claims to have been able to change the movie posters and trailers out in Home using FU's method.

Man, if this does work, it is a lot of trouble to go through to see pictures and videos that you could already see via your computer. I suppose it would be fun to force your interests on others. I'd upload corgi puppy videos and horny Japanese idol videos to the public screens for fun.

I think sony promsied it on a whim to keep people interested and now they have had to deliver it due to demand, personally i think the whole thing has been a royal waste of time, they could have put some of those resorces into making KZ2 NOT take 4 damed years. It sounded good in priceiple but now we see its the very essence of lame.

Make the furniture free. Show some cool stuff in the theater. Make games instantly playable. And make transitions to actual games seamless. I think the backlash is simply because its so NOT game related. XBL is a gateway to other players via games. Meeting someone you had fun with in Halo feels personal. Walking up to a virtual stranger for no reason feels creepy and akward.

I never got the point, but thought that it could be intresting... sadly it's more broken then I thought. As Penny Arcade said... they forced scarcity into an world where people expect no limits... Why can't I use the arcade machine at the same time... Why is there only 10 for 100k (or more) users...

In addition to trying to avoid the blatant racism, sexism and general stupidity of Home, I would tend to agree 1000% (not a typo) about their assessment of this fiasco.

And people talk trash about Xbox Live... Within 30 minutes of going public I heard more hate/sexism/lewd speech on Home than the entirety of my time on Xbox Live. Policing this place should be of utmost importance, sort of like real social interaction games like Second Life. So it is part Sony's fault.

I agree that Home is not Sony's revolution, not even close. Home doesn't have a lot of things to do, and some people may definately find it boring. I however don't think it's bad, i've met a few cool people on there, and it's entertaining when you meet a group of 4-5 people. Point is Home doesn't deserve the massive hate it's getting, it's optional and free, there's nothing wrong with that. Sony should get hate because they spent so much time and resources on it and ultimately didn't deliver a OMFG experience, but so what? It's just supposed to do all of the functions Live does in a 3D environment.

Spent like 1 hour screwing around with the 2 houses I had. 1 hour pretending to man train people. 2 hours bowling, 30 mins pool and about 15 mins at the arcade. The other 30 mins or so was just running around and doing the tutorial.

You have to get with a group of people, if you're by yourself Home sucks simply put. Once you find a group of people and they welcome you and you talk to them and what not, it's entertaining, the first time I got on the beta I was there for about 5-6 hours like the other guy said, then i did the same again the next day. But then I bought a couple new games and hadn't gone back on it until it was released a few days ago.

I hate IGN with a passion, but I gotta agree. And whoever thought it was a good idea to make people wait to play crappy virtual arcade games when you could be actually playing a much better REAL PS3 game needs their goddamned head examined.

Hmm.. lemme see, MGS 4 or Carriage return?

Uncharted or waiting until some douche in an Echochrome outfit finishes his game in Sullys Bar?

Far Cry 2 or watching 5 guys sitting in a line in the middle of the Far Cry bus station blowing bubbles out of their bubble machines?

And why isn't there a PS3 and a TV in your crib space?

Ugh.

The Beta for Playstation home is now available to everyone, and now you know what I know: this is what happens when your marketing department tries to make a game. Here is everything you need to understand about Home, if you should accidentally launch it from your XMB: press and hold the Playstation button in the center of your Dual-Shock or Sixaxis controller. From the menu that appears, select Quit.

There are things about Home that are simply beyond my understanding. Chief among these bizarre maneuvers is the idea that, when manufacturing their flimsy dystopia, they actually ported the pernicious notion of scarcity from our world into their digital one. This is like having the ability to shape being from non-being at the subatomic level, and the first thing you decide to make is AIDS.

If you approach an arcade machine and there is a person standing in front of it, you will not be able to play it. Likewise, if you see people bowling and think that bowling is something you might like to do, you probably wont be able to. Unable to play arcade games like Ice Breakers and Carriage Return the first several times we logged on, these games had begun to take on an epic stature in our minds. These were gushing fonts of liquid fun, habit-forming and dangerous - for the good of our virtual society, the supply had to be controlled. When we were finally able to play them, we learned that they were the equivalent of browser games.

There is nothing about the experience of using Home to suggest that you are actually moving through a single, contiguous environment. It is very clearly a handful of walled off zones, where you are confronted by incessant load screens in a desperate search for stimulation. From the moment you enter one of their ultrahygenic "amusement regions," it's clear that all life has been burned away. You get the sense that this is a place in which no interesting thing could ever happen.

There is already a growing school of Home apologetics, fostered by the same Order of Perpetual Masochism that lauded the rumble-free Sixaxis at launch and suggested, hilariously, that Lair and Heavenly Sword were videogames. They're under the impression that because something is free, this places it on some golden dais beyond censure. It's no virtue to give away something that no-one in their right mind would buy. Sony has no idea what this world is for, and that ambiguity infuses every simulated millimeter of it.

This is the terrible secret that roils beneath their false universe: it is nothing more than a cumbersome menu, a rampart over which you must hoist yourself to accomplish the most basic tasks.

(CW)TB out." -

Tycho

Wow, just wow, pretty much sums things up....

Game On...

I find myself in complete aquiescence with IGN in this case. Home, to me, is a 3D MySpace at this point and not much more. Suffice to say, I don't like it.

Have they fixed the bluetooth headset support for this iteration of the beta? I tried the closed beta earlier this year, and was extremely underwhelmed by a social network with limited verbal communication options.

But even if it did work correctly, why in the hell would anyone want to launch an app within their console's OS just to do some of the thing (some, not all) that the 360 lets you do no matter what you or any of your friends is already doing at the time? It's like a giant band-aid solution to an inherently flawed foundation.

And BTW, the reason I don't know if the beta still lacks headset support is because my PS3 had to get sent in for $160 repairs after getting the yellow light of death. Yes children, the PS3 breaks too.

Exactly.

As much as I bang on HOME, it still has a chance. It just has to be less lame and more gamecentric all of the social stuff is fine, but it would be nice if they figured out what the hell this thing is supposed to be and concentrate on that instead of this "space" with no real focus at all. It's a really lifeless place. It could use better ambient noice also..As is, you are just walking around and then occasionally you'll hear somebody make some incredibly stupid offhand remark out of the blue..

Yes, it does suck. After messing with it for about 2 hours...I'm pretty sure I'll never turn it on again. It's just really obtuse, and unnecessary. When I turn on a game console, I want to game FIRST, be social second. NOT the other way around. HOME literally slows down my ability to game while being social...and because of that, it fails. Hard. [QUOTE="Bread_or_Decide"]Yeah it really is. Until they make it more about THE GAMES.

Agreed. Then again, would you still log in? Really? I feel like the only times I'd ever use it are when some game company hosts a tournament on Home and everyone gathers to participate. that'd be hella cool...but again, clearly not worth the investment time Sony has put into this.

Boring, pointless and freekingman03
Being free does not negate the boring and pointless part. I can rearrange all of the pens in my desk for free also.
