I remember people saying there were no sources last time and now there are multiple because this still seems to be running rampant, I hope there is something done.

I just don't see how people fall for phishing schemes, in a way they deserved to have their account and information compromised. smh.

The only way to hack an account is to guess the password. If people aren't using strong enough passwords, that is their fault.

There were plenty of sources. Which is why sites are finally starting to report it. I only remember this one guy who refused to believe people had gotten their accounts hijacked because the chance of everyone lying and being involved in some grand trolling conspiracy existed.

hahaha, i remember that guy, now that was a fun time but on this, this is what happened with sony earlier this week "or was it last week" when hackers were trying to guess and check passwords they obtain from another website, now i wanna see if gamespot is going to make a report about it.

There is no 'hacking'. And no you didn't win a 'contest' either. And no don't send all your information to some random email to redeem your 'prize'.

People really need to get into the habit of:

A: never use the same password on different accounts

B. Change your password every so often.

Just sayin.

Actually had one of my customers have this happen to him. Was trying to get "free" MS points off the internet. Stupid people don't get hacked, stupid people give other, smarter people their passwords.

Common sense would go a long ways here, but apparently that's too much to ask from some people.

If thats the case(didn't read the link, I'm being lazy right now), then this can't be blamed on MS/Live. People need to use common sense.

Don't know why people are leaping to the conclusion that this is the fault of the users. Apparently you know for a fact that they had weak passwords and/or were phished? If so then please present this evidence.

It's very easy for someone to fall for phishing. We aren't always 100% with it, and log into stuff like 40 times a day. I bet it will happen to all of us at least once.
Sometimes the URL is almost the same, like only a few dots difference or if you don't memorize the URL it might look legit. Even the sender can be imitated and look legit. I have a dozen emails from somethingsomething@blizzard.com that are all fake.
The thing to remember is never to click a link in an email. That's the only thing to pay attention to really. But even then, some nights I can be drunk and who knows what I click :P

Wasn't Sony's actual system hacked???? Isn't the MS thing more of people individual accounts being hacked and not Live actually getting hacked itself? If Live were to get hacked then everyone's account would be comprimised don't you think?

Yeah, actually... given the average users on Ars in the comments, I'm willing to guess they weren't all using weak passwords and/or sharing the passwords in other places. Kind of scary.

Well....yes. I can prove that you can gain unauthorized access to an account through social engineering for instance. Don't know why I would need to though.

I suppose what you're actually asking is if I can prove what this attack is a result of. No I can't. Neither can you. Which is my point.

My friend hasn't been able to get into his account since 9/1. Someone got into his account, charged $100 in MS points. Sucks but he even admitted the password wasn't strong. What I really don't understand is, why the hell it's taking almost two months to get his account back.

Common sense would go a long ways here, but apparently that's too much to ask from some people.

Exactly. Fortunately I have some to spare.

To be fair it can be a chore when you have like 50 different accounts in different places.

They get it on onto their console without paying, you can look on ebay and people are selling fifa items bought with hacked accounts.
