Already a thread on this... very recent too.

But who says it isn't fun getting achievements or trophies? Some people like a challenge and attempting to meet prerequisites set by the developers to earn something is a good time.

Did you make the same thread on a different account? I mean, what are the odds two people make the same thread within a min of each other.

So true. And nobody forces you to work for achievements--it just adds replay value and a little something to work for.

The three games I've been playing lately are TF2, Mass Effect and Super Smash Brothers Brawl - all of which have achievements that actually do things (unlock weapons, abilities, levels, etc.)...so I don't really have any complaints.

There's nothing wrong with achievements if they reward you with additional in-game content, and there's not really anything wrong with achievements that have no unlockables tied to them, since you don't have to do them.

Doing some of these objectives are a challenge and people have fun doing them. Also GameSpot also have a leveling system, and I see you're a level 20. If you think accumulating points aren't fun try posting something that'll get your level down to where you started, see how fun that is.

Playing games is pointless. Why don't we just go out and do other things?

Anything can be labeled as pointless if you're going to have a negative few on it. I would rather games have trophies/achievements than forcing multiplayer into every game. Only MP game I liked was Halo 3, that's because it's gametypes weren't all similar and it had alot of other neat features. Almost every other game is just "play this/these guy(s)"

MP is going to ruin our games. There is no need for MGS4 or GTA4 to have multiplayer, yet nowadays everyone claims they need it for replay value. I wish it was like last gen, where you had your multiplayer games and you had your single player games.

I couldn't care less for either. I'd be surprised if 1/4 of the people cared if the achievements weren't shared with others like on Live.

I disagree, it adds fun because it encourages me to sometimes explore a bit more and do some of the side-quests I otherwise wouldn't have done.

I think casual achievement people are ok because it's like "oh I get an achievement for doing this sidequest? hmm... ok let's do that sidequest then!" then after you do it it's like "hey, that side-quest was really fun!" It kind of adds more objectives to a game. BUT I think that the "hardcore" achievement people are just... words can't even describe what I think of them. You know, the people beating Ninja Gaiden 2 like 9 times, just so they can get all of those achievements where they're worth 5 points for beating the game only using a certain weapon? Or the people who WON'T play GTA4 because the 100% completion achievement looks too difficult and they don't want a 900/1000 game on their profile? Those people disgust me. But casual fans of achievements are pretty fun. :D Don't you agree?

I don't mind achievements, if you enjoy the game, it's another way to prolong the game's life. If you don't care about achievements you can just ignore them. However, there is one thing that irks me, and that is there are actually people out there who are just achievement whores, renting bad games or any tit-tat just to gain some sort of score; the times when people who have crossed the line between play and work. But whatever, it's their life, it irks me but it's nothing for me to get out and tell people not to do.

While I don't particularly care for them, I'm not really opposed to them since I haven't seen anyone call anybody a 'noob' because their achievement score was low or anything.

If that starts, then yeah, I'll hate these damn things because I doubt I'll be THAT interested in getting them other than if I feel like having a little extra goal.

IT'S ALSO VERY TRUE A GAME SERVES NO PURPOSE WHATSOEVER EXCEPT TO ENTERTAIN, MUCH LIKE ACHIEVEMENTS ENTERTAIN ME.

It's a stupid argument, you claim there silly cause you should just play the game, what the hell is the achievement doing? It's playing the game, i get it cause i find it fun to collect them. You know how in super mario you go and collect every single star? Why? It's bloody pointless. But it's *fun*.

BooHoo people don't play their games the way you do, go cry over it instead of posting it here.

Good so you shouldnt mind if people do it. Look at it this way, its a game within the game. I think its a plus to have. Not only do i have satisfaction beating a game i get points for my long hours put into it. Some people play just for achivments now. If they think its fun...what really can you do abute it?

Its been going on since the first space invaders player tossed the first quarter in the machine in hopes of beating his or her high score.

In a generation where many high profile games lack a long single player campaign having the means to do something else of interest makes a lot of sense.

Dude, I could not agree more. I could care less about all that stuff. I just get online and play games with friends and others. Who has the time to worry about trophies and achievments? I only play for about 3-5 hours a week.
