Activision seemed desperate to avoid awkward questions about COD's Vita debut at Gamescom yesterday, says Jason Killingsworth.

Anybody whos watched the evening news has seen the spectacle of a defendant getting ushered out of a courthouse by their lawyer and climbing into a getaway car of sorts. The pair usually have to carve a path through a glut of reporters and popping flashbulbs. If they stop for even a moment, its to say 'no comment'. They never answer questions from the assembled press. The point is clear: somebody wants to get the hell out of Dodge.

Dodge is an appropriate word for what went down at yesterdays Call Of Duty Black Ops: Declassified presentation at Gamescom in Cologne. You might consider Activisions product managers the lawyers, and much-anticipated Vita shooter Declassified the mostly obscured defendant being shepherded past the press and into a waiting automobile.

The first Activision rep to greet the crowd of assembled press begins by establishing some ground rules. First off, dont record the whole presentation. Then a preemptive heads-up that there wont be a whole lot of time for Q&A so, if we have any questions afterward, we should find our Activision or Sony rep. Also theres plenty of information in the press kit. There probably aren't too many members of the press who travelled all the way to Cologne in hopes of being referred to a digital press kit that lives on the Internet.

Next were shown the trailer from Sonys Gamescom press conference a second time. Maybe this trailer will be the HD remake of the previous night's trailer. Nope, it looks just as uninspired as we remembered: a knife stealth kill followed by a parade of quick-cut headshots against mostly brown, formulaic backgrounds. Cue the warehouse, the airfield, the suburban neighbourhood. Volleys of gunshots blast a sharp staccato in time to the electronic soundtrack. The trailer ends, leaving the room in stony silence - the sound of professionalism, perhaps - or abject boredom.

Then Ryan Scott, associate product manager on the Call Of Duty franchise, takes the stage to tout Declassified as delivering "the authentic Call Of Duty experience on a handheld". He blows through a handful of PowerPoint slides that outline the various features of the game. For one thing, by dragging your finger across the Vitas touch screen, youll now be able to "directionalise" your grenades.

Then we watch a live game of 2v2 multiplayer taking place behind a bank of monitors. Scott offers running commentary. He points out a few of the guns, a spy plane kill streak, and attempts some banter about the trailing squad needing to catch up. At one point he takes a moment to praise the job Nihilistic has done on the environments (something were really proud of) ambient light, dust and ash floating through the air, wind whipping blankets, a bombed-out car.

The only problem is that the environments are quite evidently not impressive. In fact, theyre downright embarrassing, hardly approaching the lushness and fidelity of any recent Call Of Duty game on the current generation of consoles. Just because you read off a mental teleprompter that somethings great doesnt make it so.

The match ends. Scott wades into the ensuing silence, reminding us how excited Activision is about the game, and that it comes out in November. I know you guys have a ton of questions, he adds, but were all really short on time, as Im sure you are. Despite the presentation occupying a 30-minute time slot, things conclude in roughly 13 minutes. Were thanked for coming. The end. A smattering of half-hearted claps. Just as egotists love talking about themselves, product managers who are truly proud of a game relish the chance to field questions. Yet Activision cant use even one minute of the scheduled remaining 17 to answer questions from press. Hmm.

The lawyer helps the defendant into the car, never stopping to answer questions from the press, and the car speeds away from the courthouse. This familiar pantomime of the accused never inspires trust. The defendant is almost invariably a few months of due process away from being exposed and convicted. Stay tuned: Declassifieds verdict will be handed down in November.Edge

And to think that this was supposed to be the game that would save the Vita and make it a hit in the mainstream

I doubt it's a big budget game, likely under a million on development, nothing special, CoD isn't anything special at the best of times so CoD on Vita is just meh.

Ouch...

Even on "HD" consoles CoD looks fairly unimpressive, and I don't recall any "lushness"...

I'm scared to even think how bad this Vita version must look like.

To be fair if the videos I've seen of the game look like that in the final game then I'd be okay with it, they're not Burning Skies horrible but not the greatest either, just kind of average for a Vita game.

This is why I said, I don't believe any PSVita/ Declassified bundles are going to move many PSVita without a significant price cut. Most gamers would rather play CoD:BO2 then anything on the PSVita. Activision has failed in this case. If anything, they should pull the game, fix it and release it next year. That would be the smart thing to do, but we're talking about Activision here. They will release it as is and hold holiday shoppers haven't seen the game in action.

Don't forget they always do that to get a solid 60 FPS, you can't really expect 60 fps on a handheld without some seriously ugly environments.

It would have been a good game to add to the library, but games like Soul Sacrifice, Ragnarok Odyssey and Persona 4 Golden will help it in Japan, and games like Killzone and Assassin's Creed look really good for the western audience. I'm a part of the western audience and I'm actually looking forward to the Japanese games, lol.

It's being made by a company who made one of the worst Vita games available. I wouldn't want to talk about that either. I'm surprised Acti would let the CoD brand be slapped on a product like that.

Ive seen posts that basically accuse Activision of being in bed with MS. MS gets all the exclusive DLC deals, and its no secret how Activision wasnt pleased with PS3 early on. So here they are doing a Sony exclusive and the game gets given to a studio not exactly known for quality work. Granted, COD was likely in development long before Resistance BS released. To me this just isnt good news. I cant see this as anything more than Activision conceding COD Declassified is not that impressive.

Western publishers almost never make handheld games a priority, especially if there's a console equivalent being released at the same time. With this in mind, it's not a surprise why they're being so dodgy on the Vita CoD.

Even if it turned out just like the console games, at best it's still a below average broshooter. Is anyone really surprised that a handheld spinoff on a system with a tiny userbase is being outsourced to a crappy studio, and will therefore suck more than even your average Call of Duty? Anyone with high expectations was pretty naive.

Call of Duty didn't do much for the DS, although black ops got an 8 here at Gamespot. I doubt this will give the sales boost the PSV needs at all, people will see it as a watered down spin off and not care, like the DS/Wii games.

COD is very much a 360, PS3, PC based game now, that is where the communities are and I doubt anyone will leave them for a handheld game. Especially with the limitations of WiFi the Vita is stuck with. Maybe if the Vita was 4G capable, and the game was the same as the console version then it might have done pretty well, as it stands it looks like a poor quick cash in.

Have you not seen the ton of footage from Blops 2 then? They've barely been secretive about this at all, people have already put out full killstreak, weapon, perk and attachment lists from playing it at Gamescom, as well as direct feed footage streamed straight online. Declassified just looks bad, that's why they're ignoring it.
