From Gonintendo:

Total revenue breakdown

- MMOG (massively multiplayer online games) = 42%
- consoles = 42%
- handhelds = 12%
- PC = 4%

Console breakdown

- Nintendo Wii = 13%
- Microsoft Xbox 360 = 11%
- Sony PlayStation 2 = 9%
- Sony PlayStation 3 = 9%

Handheld breakdown

Nintendo DS = 10%
PSP = 2%

I would have never guessed that the Wii would pull in more revenue for Activision than the 360 or PS3.

I am guessing because of low development cost. Isn't WoW their only MMO? If so they are making a ton of money from just that one game.

Yeah, but that's nothing compared to WoW. That makes up 42% of their entire revenue. That is the equal of all the console game sales added together. Activision Blizzard is just a behemoth right now.

and hermits criticise xbox gamers for paying $50 a year for Live while so many of them pay $179 a year to play an old game.

How can you compare the upkeep of an MMO to something as resource unintensive as matchmaking for peer to peer multiplayer? Microsoft could easily afford to give Xbox live out for FREE if they really wanted to, but the 50 dollars is just them exploiting their customers.

It's a bit different.

Blizzard is constantly updating WoW and adding new content. There's also a justified cost with MMORPGs, the servers do need maintanance.

With XBL, your paying for a service other platforms get for free, and much of the time your not even getting dedicated servers.

Poor comparison.

For sure. I love paying full price for half of a game that has nothing new to offer. I even pay double the price at EB games because I can't get over how good of a deal it is. Who needs quality or innovation when you can have the same regurgitated game every year for $100?

Don't you pay for most of the new content in the form of expansions? These games could have been like every other pc game. Let the community run the servers but it is a cash cow so they don't allow it.

Worse part of it all is that Pittfall is the same game which was on the Gamecube. They don't say anything about that on the case. This had really upset Pittfall fans who were expecting a new game.

Yes there are Pittfall fans

Activision is going to have the most profits in the future with Guitar Hero, Call of Duty, and now World of Warcraft and StarCraft 2.

I think you just mean WoW. :D God, that's pretty much pure profit for them. I do wonder if they're going to finally succeed in running Guitar Hero into the ground though. They seem pretty intent on killing it with sequels.
