After looking at the internals of the controller in the multiple tear downs prior to the PS5 release I was wondering if it would cause a problem (added tension + plastic parts are never a good combination)

The design for the Dual Sense tension is solid. Failure for these mechanisms are inevitable. We are talking about a controller that provides resistance to the player. The resistance will vary from player to player. So, I expect some controllers to fail faster for some people than others.

Now, I will watch the video.

I get it that controllers will fail but we are talking 6 weeks after launch.

And that is exactly what i said when i posted this picture few weeks back. That is some cheap looking shit. I did not have any issues with mine (other than having issues with the left analog stick and left click on the touch pad completely broken in 138h of playtime in Demon's.........), but they're annoying as hell, even in Demon's Souls. I turned them off comletely. It adds nothing to the experience. A gimmick feature specially made to meet the "new next gen features" quota.

The time frame from launch is irrelevant. I say this because the controller offering resistance to the player. The amount of resistance a player may place on the system varies from player to player. So, some players will destroy the mechanism faster than others.

This was a concern of mine. Now that more and more of these are out in the wild I’m curious to see how much of a problem this may become. I imagine that these will be all covered by the warranty and may be mostly just an inconvenience to the consumer but this could be problematic for Sony.

@regnaston: more FUD spreading by mr insecure himself. Let me know when Sony has a class action lawsuit against them for their controllers, until then - if you want an example of actual shoddy quality refer to the class action lawsuit against MS for their cheap controllers.

Xbox definitely went with my preferred route regarding the controllers this generation, going with the "if it's not broken, don't fix it" approach. Also, the frontwards and backwards compatibility of Series X and Xbox One controllers, a great idea that creates a use for hundreds of millions of controllers. I didn't like that the DualShock 4 doesn't work on PS5 games, and I don't like how cheap the DualSense trigger internals look.

Not surprising. It's a more complex controller, but also controllers are getting made cheaper and cheaper each gen. Last gen the quality in analog modules was really bad and that's on everyone, since non of the big three thought to confront their part suppliers.

Tried partner's PS5 when he first got it. While the haptics were nice, the controller felt cheap and resistant triggers didnt make any sense to me. Plus he's having to recharge the controller every ten or so game-time hours.
I definitely prefer the Switch Pro or Series X controller.

If you are squeezing your triggers that hard then you need to calm down, take a breath, and take a walk... lol. Personally I keep my triggers at around half tension just because I prefer it that way, and I still don't jam them down like an idiot.

Haptic feedback waste of time. The ps4 introduced a touch pad and it was never used. Not one game.

They keep chucking these gimmicks at them when the old controllers with fewer buttons made games more fun and easier. Bring back the 2 button design

More moving parts bigger chances of things going wrong. As long as it's not widespread, it's acceptable.

But I'm happy I didn't jump on the PS5, all the crashing, bricking and breaking is a bit too much. Can wait for a redesign.

I wonder if there will be any mods to make PS5 triggers act more like standard ones? It'd be cool if you could even replace that whole module with a digital L2/R2.

Another gimmick on a poorly designed controller was bound to fail. Sony ripping people off with this cheap shit. Add in all the lies they've told, no games of worth and a console riddled with bugs and failures, Sony should be giving people refunds instead of scamming them.

But hey, cows live to be milked, so...

As someone who has hated every single Sony controller, this one is actually very good comfort wise. Its the shitty internals and gimmick touch pad & adaptive garbage triggers that have no use, and we're paying almost $100 for a controller because of these pointless features.

Well, while the PS5 attempts to add another gimmick into the mix, the XBO controller is still basically a nearly 20 year old design holding back what controllers are actually capable of. Both Playstation and Nintendo have been using some kind of motion controls for over a decade now, and with some promising results when used correctly. So, Sony may be becoming too experimental, Xbox isn't experimental enough. And to be completely fair, that whole dual analog thing was one of those Sony experiments.

@eoten: Ms did the whole motion control thing years ago, and much like on Sony...nobody cared for it.. All of the features on the dualshock were hardly used by 3rd party Devs; the trackpad was used as an extra button, the light was only used for vr, the motion controls were hardly used in any games.

At least it has additional buttons. The only reason most games with controller support only support 14 (plus two triggers and two analog sticks) is because that happens to be the least common denominator and that is why additional features aren't used as much. Not because they are actually useless, or nobody cares for it, but because when you're developing a game to run on all consoles, you cannot have it use more than those 14 buttons, 2 triggers, and 2 analog sticks.

Both Playstation and Nintendo have used motion controls for a decade, people like it, and gyros, when utilized property in aiming, are far superior for precision than thumbsticks, but few games will make use of that because of the Xbox controller holding things back. Heck, you can't even get Microsoft to include a rechargeable battery with their controllers, it's like they're stuck in 2005.

At least on the Reddit posts the problem is one tiny metal spring that either snaps, or bents out of shape. Should be pretty easy to fix, I'm sure as hell not going to send my whole system somewhere because of that.

In a month, its just a spring. In three to four months, the plastic gears are done. only a matter of time.

Most people won't be taking their controllers apart for regular maintenance and repair and they shouldn't have to. I've done my own complete teardown of the PS5 controller and it's a bit of a bitch to work on. Not that the PS4 controller was much better though.

I would imagine changing those plastic gears to metal would make it more durable. Some lube should help with the friction too.

@hardwenzen: Might be, we'll see. I like the feature, but they clearly didn't test the triggers enough. I have never broken a controller though, my launch (left) joy-con started drifting and I changed the thumb stick to a new one.

I would definitely rather have more battery life than useless features (to me personally) like gyroscopes, touchpads, lightbars, adaptive triggers, wow, the list really goes on and on with stuff I really don't care about on the PlayStation controllers. The Xbox Series X controller is perfect, IMO. I even like how I can easily replace the li-ion batteries without taking the controller apart and soldering stuff.

Yeah, there's more and more reports of triggers blocking or not responding.....which is not surprising when you're asking a piece of plastic to resist pressure.

lol you don't solder anything if you'd like to replace the battery inside a PS controller.

It's an impressive feature, but I wondered about the endurance of this. A lot of people can be heavy handed with their controllers. I've noticed triggeres are the one part of the controller I'm heavy handed with. I've cracked triggers in one old Xbox 360 controller over time. Like when I want to go full throttle in certain parts of a racing or flight game, I'd pull hard. In regular past controllers I'd press harder on those buttons which handled Acceleration and brake.

Those look like plastic cogs. Sounds like a really bad idea in a controller. That resistance would focus directly on those plastic cogs.

EVERYTHING is plastic. I don't know if you have tried it, but it really is not impressive at all. And if you're playing anything competitively, this thing is permanently off.

I think they should have used metal for the cogs. Plastic cogs micro fracture over time.

No, I haven't tried it, but it sounded impressive from what people have said.

@hardwenzen: I wouldn’t know, I’ve never done it, just like 99% of other people never will. If a PlayStation controller battery dies, the controller goes in the garbage. It’s nice that you can easily replace the Xbox controller battery, anyone can do it. Plus, there’s over 100 million Xbox One controllers out in the wild that can now work on the Series X. PS4 controllers are now useless on PS5 and will be garbage anyways because of the hard to replace battery.

@eoten: Motion controllers are a gimmick. Name me one ps game that is objectively better because of motion controls. Ms did motion controls in sidewinders in the 90s, and they were fun for a while but ultimately died out because nobody wanted it.

As for batteries, it’s the same old argument that I never understood. A controller that comes with a solution that gives you 30 hours of gaming, with an option to buy a battery pack and an option to buy rechargeable batteries is always going to be better than a controller that has 8 hrs of game time as it’s only option.

You do know that Cyberpunk sold over 13 million copies after refunds in its first week, which is more than any Sony first party title sold on the PS4 lol.
