This is a genuine question here.....

How old are all the people that love cartoon style platform games. Games like Ratchet, Mario etc

I ask because i see alot of love for these games here on SW. I myself though just cannot stand these games and i put that down to my age, i'm 34. I liked them when i was younger, much younger and my kids love them, even my eldest daughter (16).

Most of my friends own consoles and most are over 28, none play these type of games. I buy them, obviously for my kids but never ever play them. ( well other than when my youngest daughter age 7 forces me to play LBP online with her).

I will only say that I'm older than you, a little older than my teeth and as old as my tongue but me likes some platformers just not as much as years & years ago. :P

I don't see what age has to do with liking a good game.

Slashkice

That is what i am trying to find out lol. I used to like Cartoonie platform games, now i hate them, just put it down to my age. I'd rather be playing a good RTS or RPG.

Yeah, I used to love platforming games too... but I've grown tired of them, kind of like turn based JRPG's too.

I've gone away from those games too, probably just bored myself of them after the later Sonic games failed to impress, same for Mario but thats just me... I like RTS and FPS and a good action game but it's not that i don't like cartoon games it's just i don't get the same sense of enjoyment i used to have so i went onto other genres.

Don't take offense at my question. I am not bashing the Genre, sales of these games do not lie. Just wanted to know if like me people turned away from them the older they got.

30, very ambivalent towards platformers; think the last one I played and really enjoyed was Crash 2 or 3 when I was 19 or 20. They just don't offer the experience I'm looking for, generally speaking.

This is pretty much what im trying to work out. I used to love games like conker. I remember playing the original Gex (side scroller) on 3DO and i loved it. Mario 64 was one of my favourite games. I always just put it down to my age as to why this genre just doesn't interest me, i do try. Maybe its just a case of "they don't make em like they used to".

Same age (34) and I wish there were more platformers being made. I have grown tired of all the other genres at one time or another but I can always go back to the good old platformers at any time.

I'm 22 and I love playing platform games I like the Ratchet and Clank series, LittleBigPlanet and the Mario games. I really like Prinny on the PSP it may look quite childish to some people but that game is very hard and frustrating but it can be fun. I wish consoles did get more platformers as the games market as far too many FPS games. Personally I don't care what people say I play what I want to play.

I'm 18 and my current favorite game of this generation is SMG2. I really don't see that changing, but I also get that your question wasn't meant in a condescending way.

I don't think age affects what one likes, it's that with the passing of time, expectation and preference change in principle. Personally, I despise most games that try to be dark, violent and especially realistic, which I find to be totally redundant. But that's just how I am, it might be different when I'm older, but I doubt it will. There is no real "ideal" audience for a visual styIe, there's just an ideal perspective.

I'm 22, and I still love games such as Mario and Jazz Jackrabbit. The cartoony presentation doesn't matter (unless if it gets a bit too cute and pink like in Kirby), and even fits well. The point is that these games still provide amazing, polished, original gameplay, and that is what true maturity is about for me. I find that the only people who truly care about playing 'mature' games are teenagers who try badly to act like adults.

But as I said, maturity and presentation essentially don't have a lot to do with eachother. I'll play Mario any day without feeling 'too old' for those games. Yet when I played God of War I was a bit embarassed seeing as the game very obviously tried to appeal to 17-year olds. The over-the-top gore and the beyond embarassing sex sequences will attest to that.

It isn't a factor really, why do so many people on SW insist on coming into a thread with this attitude.

It is a genuine question i want answering, do people of my age group play Cartoon platform games or like ,me have they lost interest in them as they have aged. It is a simple question, not meant to offend anyone. Fact is for me at the age of 5-25 i would have absolutely loved SMG, over the past 10 years however i have grown increasingly distant from the genre...is it just me or is it an age thing?..........simple question, maybe i should have made a poll.

Well, it also depends on why the games don't appeal to you anymore. Is it just the presentation that you don't like, or are you just not interested in the genre anymore?

Maybe it is a bit of both. I dont know what it is, probably the genre as cartoon style games do not bother me at all. Come to think of it i also struggle to like games like Prince of Persia these days, that is like a platformer too. Just strange how my taste has changed so much.

Oddly enough, that's the exact same feeling I got when playing GoW. If anything, it's games like that that I find to be "childish". Though I usually don't like to attribute a maturity gauge towards anything but the most pointless of edutational drivel (Elmo's Number Quest, how terribly exciting!)

Sorry, I'm just have a chip on my shoulder for people in general who thinks all platformers are kiddy despite the fact that one of those games got a 10 on GS. For me, I'm 20 and I still enjoy games like Super Mario Galaxy 2. I'm looking forward to Kirby Epic Yarn, and I thought LittleBigPlanet is a relaxing game to play. For the record, I also play Mass Effect 2, GTA IV, Company of Heroes, Fallout 3 and Neverwinter Nights series.

lol, considering some of the games i play on with my wife and kids on the Wii (and really enjoy) i could never call a game kiddie.

EDIT: i tell a lie, i do call games kiddie, but ones that actually are. Like the one in my Steam sig right now, World of Zoo lol. My daughters game, i told her she could get any $10 game the other day, she said that was $10, it was $15 the little sod.

i'm 20 years old and I still love platformer games. I adore LittleBigPanet and Super Mario Galaxy is a great game as well. One of my favorite games of all-time is Banjo-Tooie on the N64. Seriously, age shouldn't become a factor in liking or disliking these types of games. If that's really your case then I think it's because you're more concerned your ego and of what other people would think of you playing "cartoon style" games rather than you genuinely not liking them.

Heres an idea, actually read what i said, then read some of the other posts i have made before making such an assumption. Im 34 years old with 3 kids and one on the way. I spend alot of time playing cooking mama, Babysitter party, carnival games (i could list 40 others) with my kids and love it. It is nothing to do with ego.

"Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."
- C.S. Lewis

That's my feeling on the whole issue.

I'm 20 and will play anything whether it be cartoony, or realistic.

- C.S. Lewis

Heh. My first home platformer was Pitfall on the Atari 2600. Shows how old I am. Although I love PC gaming by far. I also take breaks from those and indulge in some SMG2.
