I was thinking how hardcore gaming was during the NES era. When the NES came out gaming was at the the for-front of hardcore-ness. The Nes was the reason for gaming magazines, gaming tv shows, even video to movies conversions. Video games were so hard back then that gamers needed to master curtain games because of its hardcore difficulty. I remember having friends, who use to cry because of how hardcore levels was in these games. The challenge to master some of these games were that intense.

I myself had times where i mentally broke down trying to figure out how to master a game as a child, example being Battle Toads and that infamous bike level. During the NES era, i can say thats when hardcore gaming started.

The Sony Playstation Station console was when most would say casual gaming started. I'm not sure exactly what aspect of the Playstation brand started casual gaming. I'm just going by what people been saying; that sony started casual gaming. I personally can say casual gaming started when Tetris hit PC and the Gameboy.

I even recalled Nintendo having a casual brand during the NES era, that was similar to wiifit. Is anyone old enough to remember the Power Pad? this device?

A lot of those "hardcore" games was just bad game design or technical/creative limitations in reality , we just didn't have much of a choice back then just in hopes to get some fun and fair challenge out of the frustrating games. It was a mess.

so games like legend of zelda was a technical limitation? games that limit the amount of lives you had too was a technical limitation? games like contra? i always thought it was about getting better or giving up on the game like a loser. it was all about memorizing a pattern, a level, etc.

Nintendo didn't start hardcore or casual gaming. There were other systems before it.

I wouldn't say Sony started casual, they were never really casual. They just converted/ brought over those otherwise casual to a more hardcore part of the market, hence the PS2 selling quite a lot.

The Commodore vic 20 and the C64 had a lot of what could be considered hardcore games on them. Both systems predate the NES. A lot of those developers moved on to the consoles after cutting their teeth on those early systems. Nintendo didn't start anything. What they did was revive a dormant industry and improve a lot of things that were already there.

and yet no one gave a flying frig about consoles before the nes. i played all those old school games before the nes and let me tell you, nothing really hardcore about them one bit. repeating levels had no sense of depth what so ever. the main gold was actually trying to achieve a high score.

ding ding ding, we have a winner!

Actually the first casual console IMO is the gameboy(Tetris is as casual as it gets...and very addictive to say the least)

Arcade then later for consoles Neo Geo started hardcore gaming. Arcade is by default look like a casual thing but most of ht efolks who play thre are hardcore gamers(Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat, Virtua Fighter, King of Fighters,...etc)

Atari, Intellivision, etc started the casual gaming. Nintendo started the hardcore gaming, but got worse at it over time. Sony just perfected the hardcore gaming.

Sony's PS1 and PS2 consoles had a fine mix of both hardcore & casual games. all i know is, Nintendo owns the rights to casual gaming as we speak.

Just because nobody cared didn't mean they didn't exist OR do it first. You are wrong. Just deal with it.Just because you want to be ignorant and ignore the facts doesn't make you right.

And "repeating levels had no sense of depth what so ever. the main goal was actually trying to achieve a high score."

Nonsense. The Vic 20 and C64 had amazing games. They were the PCs of their day.

Wait....what....seriously...albeit they were the first there, but c'mon. I'd say it's a far stretch of the imagination to say that those systems reached the mass market that the PS1 and it's predecessor(s) did

Atari 2600: 30 million units sold
Intellivision: 3 million units sold
Colecovision: 6 million units sold

vs.

PS1: 102 million units sold
PS2: 140 million units sold

c'mon....

So what? The market was a lot smaller then, but it existed.Sure The Playstations were more successful, but that isn't the point.Casual gaming existed well before either Playstation was even a design concept.

I never said it didn't exist in some form.......but Sony opened the door into casual gaming MUCH more than those other consoles you mentioned. And now Wii is capitalizing even farther into what Sony started (where even Sony didn't or couldn't go) and that was the point of my original post

It's a hell of a lot more accurate than saying Nintendo or Sony started it. I honestly don't know how you can start something that already started.

It's like saying the Beatles started rock or Michael Jordan invented the slam dunk.
