Not bad, but I guess in todayโ€™s market, thatโ€™s considered mediocre lol. Have you played Alan Wake 2, SW? I havenโ€™t yet, but will play it eventually. They should have released the physical edition at launch.

Having physical at launch would have only helped them.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I like my games like I like my women, and that's physical.

From all reports I dodged a bullet because I hear it's pretty much a walking simulator now which is such a shame as the OG was interesting and a good game.

It is kind of like the Resident Evil games now. I do like walking simulators though. :)

Nice. I have yet to play this game. Can Alan Wake run/jog longer in the sequel? He was awfully out of breath in the first game.

They are still in the red too. But getting closer to breaking even.

I bought some EGS bundle that included the first and second game (and a Fortnite skin ๐Ÿ˜ฌ) but never played the games. Somedayโ€ฆ Iโ€™ve heard plenty of good things

The game had a budget of 70 million Euros ($75 million), including development and marketing.

1.8 million copies at about $60 would be equivalent to around $100 million gross.

When you take various other factors into account (like distribution costs, platform fees, and price cuts), it doesn't seem like they broke even.

I assume Epic covered a lot of the production costs as part of their exclusivity deal. So it probably didn't lose Remedy any money, even if the exclusivity deal lost them sales.

*edit* But yes, Epic presumably lost money on the deal. They're good at doing that.

It's odd how such well known and well reviewed games struggle to break even. Maybe they should start going smaller.

I doubt Remedy will struggle from this game. Epic paid for most or all of its production.

Also, the game was a massive critical success, and was widely recognised at one of the best games of 2023. The lower sales numbers reflect the fact that it's digital only, it was an extremely competitive launch period (releasing a month after the woke megalith that was BG3), and it was an Epic exclusive on PC (which always hurts sales).

If you look at all of those factors and your only conclusion is "lol it is woke", then you're clearly not very media literate or particularly knowledgeable about the industry.

@R4gn4r0k: A pooload. Too much is spent on b-list "actors", giving even worse performances.

I thought Kojima was up his own ass, but Sam took it to another level with AW2.

Playing Alan Wake 2 right now... it's fantastic. Hopefully it makes enough $$ for Remedy.

Not sure about Control 2 being an action RPG though... I hope that doesn't mean a bloated game.

If 1.8 million is a flop, then that's proof that games need cheaper development. Before, hitting 1 million sales was good. Now, hitting 1 million isn't even a breakeven for some of these games.

Then that would make sense why it under-sold... Epic exclusivity almost always kills sales.

But hey, if Epic were able to compensate them, then that should be enough to break even. Epic have too much Fortnite money to blow.

Sales would probably be double that if it were on Steam and other stores.

I know we all hate (or want to hate...or think others should hate...) Steam, but when the alternative is literally killing off sales and removing choice from customers, what argument do you really have to favor this practice?

Forced exclusivity, especially on what should be an open platform like PC, is a load of bullshit.

I suppose the only point here to make an exception is that this is a game published by Epic, so I guess it's only fair they have exclusive rights to sell the game. Even if doing so is cutting off their nose to spite their face.

@shadyacshuns said:

Not as much as being on Steam and GoG would have.

But you're right, physical probably would have helped a bit too, but I think maybe you overestimate the size of the "physical or nothing" crowd.

No, I wouldn't as i've heard it's not that good, mostly walking and looking for things and is light on when it comes to combat etc, such a shame as the first game was pretty good.

Oh, they've already released the physical version a month ago.

I only played the first Act because it is a walking simulator. That and the pretend investigation stuff, where investigation consists of fetch tasks where you pin the evidence to the wall, push a button, and get the next clue/task. No thinking required. There is some creepy atmosphere stuff, but in general I was bored out of my mind. I may guilt myself to try it again sometime, but that's probably going to require a bunch of alcohol.

Even though Alan Wake 2 did win a few awards from the VGA 2023, the word of mouth did kinda help it out but there are several reasons why it's still missing half the sales:

  1. Alan Wake 2 has yet to be released on Steam & GoG, and that alone is why EGS is still being hated for the exclusive despite Epic owning Remedy.
  2. No physical release is another reason why it miss the hype when the digital release. Companies need to stop doing digital only and release physical at the same time.
  3. If you get triggered by this post, just ignore my post and move on. Just leave because I gotta call this one out. SBI involvement did in fact hurt most fans feelings and after playing it, I can see why but still, I enjoy Alan Wake 2. Saga Anderson had to be injected to the story was fine, I personally like playing her more than Alan himself to be honest but that's due to her being in the woods more and it made it more creepy than being trap in Dark City.

1.8 million units sold is ok, but it could have been better.

The only way I will play it is when it's in the bargain bin just to see if it has any redeeming qualities.

It did get a physical release on October 22nd, so 1.8 million sales are piss poor for this well known game.

Why do hermits act like Epic will kill their first-born child if they use Epic's launcher? you guys should encourage competition on PC, not fight for Valve's monopoly.

Looks like I was right again... good thing they got Epic and Nvidia to fit the bill.

On a side note I played it on PS+ through the game trial and this game is legitimately terrible. I fought one enemy in chapter 1 and the entire gameplay loop is you clicking on highlighted objects and placing them on a board in order to move on to the next scripted section.

If you criticize Sony first party games for being to " movie like" and somehow actually enjoy this game you are a hypocrit.

The fact an old remaster sold as much as a brand new sequel tells you all you need to know. The company breeds shitty products and failed games. AW2 could be sitting at over 4 million copies right now instead it hasn't even turned a profit after a year. UNKNOWN 9 flopped miserably and the studio is already shutdown.

SBI hurting fans feelings? ๐Ÿ˜‚ Gaming sure breeds snowflakes.

The remake sold around the same, which is interesting.

SBI has removed the list of companies they work with because nobody's wants to be associated with them anymore ๐Ÿคฃ

Ok Mr Snowflake. 5 days later.๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ

Lol cope harder!

Your side has had to do that alot lately ๐Ÿคฃ

They likely getting around 500k more sales in a few month if they do those accessibility features like in Control or guardians of the galaxy. I am waiting for those and definitely buying at full price if that mode is updated into the game.
