Alien Isolation has gotten 5 BAFTA awards nominations - more than any other title!

It's great that this game has been recognized by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, because it has been severely underrated in a lot of places, and even if it overall got a respectable Metacritic score of around 80, it hasn't been included in that many best-of 2014 lists. It was my 2014 GOTY by a country mile.

Do you agree with its nominations? How many do you think it will snatch? What do you think of other nominees?

ByPublished 10/02/2015

The brilliant, British-made Alien: Isolation has scooped six nominations for this year's BAFTA Game Awards - more than any other title.

Creative Assembly's claustrophic sci-fi creepfest is up for Best Game, British Game, Game Design, Game Innovation, Music and Audio Achievement awards.

Also up for Best Game are Destiny, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Mario Kart 8, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and mobile puzzler Monument Valley.

Far Cry 4 is the joint second-most nominated title, with nods for Artistic Achievement, Game Design, Music, Story and Performer.

Monument Valley also managed five nominations - for Artistic Achievement, Best Game, British Game, Mobile/Handheld and Original Property.

Kevin Spacey is nominated in the Performance category for his role in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, alongside Ashley Johnson (Ellie) in The Last of Us: Left Behind, Logan Cunningham (Transistor) in Transistor, Melissa Hutchinson (Clementine) in The Walking Dead: Season 2, Troy Baker (Pagan Min) in Far Cry 4 and Adam Harrington, aka Bigby Wolf in The Wolf Among Us.

The awards are set to be held on Thursday, 12th March at London's Tobacco Dock (tying into the first day of EGX Rezzed), and streamed live online via Twitch.

Actor and comedian Rufus Hound will present the show for the first time, taking over from long-time host Dara Ó Briain.

Pretty mediocre game apparently. Rare case where the game should've been a fair bit shorter.

It's a good game with an atrociously paced 2nd half. It should win for best audio design, and in their nominees best game, because their best game nominees suck. Bayonetta 2, Shovel Knight, Divinity: Original Sin, Talos Principle, and This War of Mine were significantly better designed games.

It shouldn't get any awards. That game isn't good at all. It should also be a sin to end games on awful cliffhangers now that it's 2015.

The game was awesome but the sound design should get a lot more recognition, one of the very best ever.

That's true, the sound design was insane, and the way music was dynamically and procedurally generated, including up to 3 different layers of overlapping music tracks that played all sorts of tricks on your mind.

Its probably the best Alien game, I really enjoyed it. In fact in 30 years of gaming I can think of only two Alien games I ever liked, the other was Alien 3 on the Megadrive (not including AVP1+2).

Yep, it was my personal GOTY for 2014. PC Gamer also gave it GOTY. Metacritic user and critic scores were in the 80's and Steam user reviews were 94% positive. Gamespot and IGN's reviewers got it wrong and didn't appreciate it for what it was, that's all there is to it. Amazing game.

Alien: Isolation truly deserves all the nominations it gets. It was without a doubt without one of the best games of 2014.

I enjoyed this a great deal. Personally I found it a very satisfying experience to finally play an Alien licensed game that does the franchise justice, it's been years. After the stinkers that were AVP (2010) and Colonial Marines, this was a breath of fresh air. Strangely the DS Alien Infestation game was a good bit of metroidvania fun, but license deserves something grander.

I loved this game from beginning to end. I've heard many reviewers say they thought the first half of the game was great and the second half was just dragging on and such. I strongly disagree with this after having played it myself. I think what others are experiencing is just the adjustment effect people experience from scary games where initially it's suspense and tension is more thrilling in the beginning and then become desensitized to it as the game goes on.

As far as the story and the missions/objectives go I still enjoyed the game to the very end. I think it's hard to talk about the later half of the game without spoiling it though so it doesn't get much attention. Some people also gave it grief for backtracking, I didn't so much mind it and in fact I thought it was part of the exploration of the game, as new areas open up you gain the tools to go into areas not yet explored to get those collectibles. Collectibles I think add a bit more to the game, obviously you can play and just press forward getting to that next save station. Going into areas you don't need to though, exploring, backtracking, it's not necessary, but it adds an extra thrill knowing you can die by an unpleasant random visit from the alien.

I've seen some people harp about always having the alien on your heals. Though, can't really defend that without spoiling the game. There's a perfectly good reason for that and it involves that there were multiple aliens on the ship the whole time, and a hive hidden deep in the ship.

I thought the game did a good job though breaking up the monotony of the space station atmosphere, with certain missions like the space walk sections I thought were pretty cool, or the flashback mission to explore the derelict ship (and it's cargo) on LV-426. And the hive mission toward the end was a good twist on things.

honestly that game got punished for some frankly lame reasons. The filler oriented 2nd half? Fair knock, some of the other stuff? Were straight BS.

I had my own beefs with it, actually (more on that later as I'm commuting to work atm) and while I can feel where this criticism about second half's pacing comes from - on the other hand we were uncertain when Alien would return. Besides, the game needed a bit of change when it came to the type of tension it had been employing up to that point and the end of the game was again, intense as **** - and its significance was fueled by the previous sequences which changed the pace. It wouldn't have been as relentless and pronounced if it was all one giant nerve-wracking onslaught. It's just like humour. You cannot keep churning out one punchline after another. You need some punctuation, some breathing space to make it work. However, in the long run I agree that segments with androids (however creepy they were) weren't as strong as the first half of the game.

I really don't care, and shouldn't, I haven't played it yet, so I can't pass judgement.

But I love how Salt is still so... salty about the score, lol. Or at least he was for a while there. He might be over it now.

Alien Isolation is definitely special.

However I don't think these awards should carry any weight given their other nominations.
