All Cars Get Damage in GT5, Deformation, Mechanical Damage Confirmed

Source

Video: Ferrari 458 Italia Damaged in Gran Turismo 5

After spending some hands-on time with the Gran Turismo 5 demo at the Tokyo Game Show, IGN editors got the chance to speak with a "Sony rep" who was able to clarify some of the questions about the differences in vehicular damage. Concerns were first raised when Yamauchi specifically mentioned "damage to racing cars", leaving the door open to speculation that "street cars" in the game may not be so fragile. This notion was reinforced when only Subaru's WRC rally carshowed damage at GamesCom.

Now, at TGS, we may finally be catching a glimpse of what this secondary level of deconstruction actually looks like.As you can see, although body panels do not become detached, they do, to quote IGN editor Greg Miller, show "deformation damagescratches and stuff". Greg was also able to reaffirm that all cars will experiencemechanical damage. While this is refreshing news, the question still remains: is Polyphony Digital restricted from showing "full" damage on street cars due to manufacturer licensing issues, or would it simply take too long to implement such severe deformation on GT5's diverse catalog of nearly 1,000 vehicles? It would be a great direct question for an interview with Yamauchi-san, but I'm not going to hold my breath… Check out the video after the jump.

It's both a good thing and a bad thing IMO, i like the fact they are at least making it so all cars get visual damage which is good HOWEVER i really hate the fact that only the proper racing cars get the full on deformation (with parts falling off etc) which is bad, I recon they should have stuck with 1 or the other NOT both types as it kinda makes it look half finished (if/when it's like this at release).

Not that impressive, really. Forza 3, GTR, etc. all do better, but with so many cars in GT5, something had to be sacrificed.

Why should they hurt the customer by not creating the best experience possible. Damage was neccesary (my biggest complaint was that if they didn't have damage on all models then it would be an unfair advantage for some cars). But I don't care about full damage mode on some cars (which means just cooler and better damage) and average damage for other cars.

It's more catch-up than anything. Here's hoping they have some anouncements about vehicle customization (at least let me repaint my cars in stock colours without buying new ones). Though to be honest I don't care about damage in my Gran Turismo anyway, as I don't play it for realistic racing - I play it to ogle cars and watch replays.

There's so much misinformation about GT5 that is kinda hard to believe everything PD says... by this rythm if they implement everything they swore to they will have it finished by 2019. Anyways its very lame not having any particle effects whatsoever, i see no smokes, no sparks... it is feeling more like need for speed underground in which you could literally play the entire game without braking, you just use the walls to set you on your way.

Superficial cosmetic damage (I.E. Need for Speed: Most Wanted) to all cars with race cars experiencing actual deformation or mechanical damage to all and deformation to race cars?

its not that simple. it depends on the car company. some will allow it some wont. forza 3 has the same thing. some of their cars isnt full damage like turn 10 kept braging about.

Why don't you go play Forza 3 and crash into a wall at 100 MPH and see if you can still finish the race like that...Or Crash into a wall and don't see actual deformation.

EDIT: Playing on easy and replaydoesn't count...

Well Bioshock is right...in this particular video (ferrari) there are only paint scratches and no damage at all. There also is other video with subaru losing part of bumper and opening doors but there still isnt any kind of deformation.....so far

GT5 will have mechanical damage that affects the car's performance as well. I think that's more important....

still for a game in developement which looked pretty far into its developement cycle its not gonna be perfect. But to be honest you always look at a way of trying todamage control, thats theres actually a good chance GT5 could come back and steal that crown off Forza for console racing sim king.

Both will be good games nonetheless but Poly went into their dev cycle a while ago and wanted their core formula down i actually think they were naive to the rise of the genre as a whole.

That's just it though. (So far) I've read that the Suberu and the Ferrari both had mechanical damage but in both those videos they seem just fine driving off after serious hits. Maybe that due to the fact that the game still has 6 months to go but Something like a car bumping into you while your breaking around a coner in the Forza 3 demo can affect your transmission shifting....As of right now Forza 3's sim damage is one of the best (if not the best) for any racer today.

There's is no damage at all. It just scraped the paint. As always though, what's more important is how the internal damage affects the performance of the car.

I'd think by now it would be obvious why they can't do that...Unless they are fake cars (Burnout, Grand Theft Auto 4) they have a limit to how much damaged they can do to a manufacturer's car. No one questioning if it's possible with either game, just who does it better with those limits...

The idea in a sim is not to total your car...this only serves as a punishment for people that take big risks or just drive stupidly. Still, actual deformation severs as nothing more than an indicator.

Not having that indicator is like Madden not having grass stains or feild deformation, or like Fight Night and UFC not having bruising or cuts. WWE not having limb damage or blood... You see what I'm saying?

And about those "concrete barriers."

Barriers on race tracks only exist in the concrete and the filled-with-water variations.... ones that are not filled with water or some other kind of barrier is simply not possible....

Excellent. Unlike Forza, I hope they don't wuss out on damage-outs. And rollovers are a necessity, now that Forza has it.

Patience is a great virtue, and this is something I have bucket-loads of being a Playstation gamer, lol. GT5 may have been delayed, though I am not sure if Sony ever confirmed a released date for this fall, they may have. Anyway the delay is going to do wonders for the latest entry in the most successful driving franchise to ever exist, can't wait to get my hands on it. I hope damage can be turned on/off though but it's definitely a welcome addition to the series.

Forza's damage is almost identical :?. Scratches and dents on the car. What GT5 does more is take race car damage to another level (Nascar & Rally). Street cars will be basically the same as Forza 3 though. Now we just need to know exactly how well the mechanical damage is done.
