I just finished reading an anonymous blog on the work conditions in Rock sat san-diego.

No vacation time, 7 day work period, mandatory 6 hour over time, cuts to health care, cut for over time for experience works. Now, how would you feel to work like that for a year...

link....

I love their games and I understand that working close to something like this is common in the work place but come on, they have to treat their workers better than this.

Pretty harsh, not a nice way to treat your hard workers.

This pales to charges that were brought against EA years ago.

Rockstar deserves to get shot for that. Not cool. Weird thing. Video game companies either seem to have some of the best work conditions, or the worst.

I'll wait for a more solid source than an anonymous blog to condemn them.

From what I've heard this is the norm as it gets towards a game coming out, but all the time? That sounds really dodgy.

Game companies from second hand experience are either well managed with great working conditions and the occasional week or two of crunching before launch of a product, or hell-holes that drive the employees to high stress levels and depression.

Game companies are pretty notorious for having poor working conditions. The companies are under an extreme amount of stress to put out the expected product in a certain window of time, and they start pushing their employees to their limits so that they can get the job done. I'm not justifying these types of working conditions, but I'm saying that it's not uncommon, nor is it hard to figure out why such conditions are being imposed on the employees.

In the work world these kind of conditions *the unpaid overtime in general* is called "Crunch Time" and it's in your contract when you sign up, software companies use this alot as well and if your behind your deadline you have to work to catch up wether you like it or not.

Just looked it up, I over exaggerated that. The guy got overworked and the stress messed him up so bad he's like paralyzed now. I can't imagine Pixar level stress to meet dead lines. Cause every pixar movie has been pretty legit according to most people and nobody wants to be on the one that fails. So it's like they constantly have to outdo themselves.

They get paid to sit at a computer and talk about games all day. It's not like they're actually doing any manual labor.

Have you ever had to program anything more intensive than perhaps "Hello world"? It gets very hard and very stressful in a hurry, even if you are very good at it.

Yeah not really uncommon. I was doing some focus testing at a major studio (won't say who just in case) but many a time the guy i was focus testing with was pretty much sleeping at the office and was having an average of 4 days sleep a week. something definitely should happen to prevent this stuff from happening. At least 9-5, 5 days a week.

I want to work in the games industry, but if that means getting overworked and less pay i might look into other industries :?

Pretty much! I mean why do they need so many people to make one game?? I'm currently making KZ3 on my own, I have coded everything, done all the 3d models, animations, AI on my own and have done a 20 hour SP campaign with a perfectly balanced multiplayer. these guys are wusses...

In all seriousness, i'd like to see you work in a AAA studio and see how long you last if you're just "sitting at computers and talking about games all day"

I have no problem with this. If they feel they are being treated badly then they can quit and try to find another job. If they want to keep their job then they should stay.

I just read that article and some of the comments. I find things like this in life upsetting to be honest, it just seems like people are ebing trodden on and warn down for the sake of it.

Then we have the Bore fest that was GTA4 making a BILLION DOLLARS of revnue. Thats actually ridiculus the employeers should be rewarded for that not warn down.

I hope they do not change the work ethic at the studio so the case goes to court and they get sued. I dont like the fact they have the grace of a warning in the form of this letter and personally i hope all the management lose there jobs for to be quite honest being terrible management. Terrible i hate this stuff HATE it i have to work and i have met people with the mentality that the workforce is dumb or unworthy of being paid anything and people like that should be rooted out in a management course WAY before they get a position. Not advocating physical violence or anything but i hope some of them get whats coming to them.

What do you know? I mean saying that you sound like someone who's never worked and you sound like a child. Take a reality check its not always possible to simply QUIT a job and at the end of the day people deserve to be treated better. People with a mindset like yours are usually the root of the problem.

The way the letter was written it made it seem like this team was suppose to receive some type of royalty pay for GTA. I could be wrong but that's how I interpreted the "Not receiving loyalties for billion dollar game" sentence.

Overtime is pretty much standard in this industry if you like your job. Seems like the manager is getting a bit over the top, maybe that department is late or something. I would expect 6 or 7 days a week if it's really close to deadline anyway. Depends on what there doing and how much there getting paid.

Do work quicker.
