I played it on PC and I could not get past that "hug the wall" gameplay. Sure it was pretty as hell, but the gameplay was just weak.
Also, did they improve on the game any for 2 and 3?

did u play it with a controller or keyboard/mouse?campzor
kb/m. I readily abmit that when it comes to first/third person shooters, I suck big time on a controller.
I thought it was decent enough but that's about it, and the graphics while being technically accomplished were a bit monotone and bland.I played it on PC and I could not get past that "hug the wall" gameplay. Sure it was pretty as hell, but the gameplay was just weak.

The games all play essentially alike, with the cover being a huge factor, but i do want to tell you that I liked the feel of geow 2 much better than gears 1, and gears 3 feels even better. Also in gears 3 the enemies mutate to invalidate your cover, so you have to change cover a lot more, adding a bit of tension when youre running to that next piece.I played it on PC and I could not get past that "hug the wall" gameplay. That sounds like a nice improvement.

i think it'd be best played with a controller (even if u 'suck' at it :P) i cant imagine 'locking' into cover with kb/m. Besides that i think the game was great. Had a lot of cool atmosphere to it.Have you tried tps with controller? Ill agree that FPS is miles better with kb/m, bit for some reason a tps like gears feels better with a controller.[QUOTE="campzor"]

Yea, it speeds the action up a bit, but on insane difficulty it really sucks to have to run through the open with giant gunker mortars flying at you.I played it on the PC, couldn't get in to it. Gears of war 3 on the other hand looks very promising.
Yes...you are the only one. ;)
Seriously of all 3 Gears games the first is my least favorite, but I would still take it over many of the big games this generation.
I like the Gears series as a whole but I think it is over-rated. Halo and Forza are the best Microsoft properties IMO (and Kameo). I am not even sure why Gears 3 gets so much graphics love. I do not think it looks that good but keep in mind I just got off the boat (30 minutes in I guess?)
I am NOT saying it is a bad game and I do think it is a AAA product, but it seems to be getting most of its hype because of the way it looks and not becasue of the more important elements. It is another Crysis. People look over its ho-hum gameplay because it looks so nice. Well, it looks so nice to most people.
Yes, you are.
Gears 1 was an unbeatable diamond (360). Gears 2 was horrible, though, and Gears 3 I don't care so much for.
I hate the Gears series (haven't played 3 though) but I'll say that it is one damn good looking game.
It was okay, but I couldn't really get into it that much. The gameplay was rather poor. I had also already played Uncharted: DF at that point, so going from the very fluid cover system and gunplay of Uncharted to the very stiff gameplay of GeoW was pretty rough. Good co-op though, so it definitely had that going for it. Horrible pop-in though.
my roomate at the time that game came out had a x box 360, he rented the game and we played it. needless to say while i liked the chainsaw gun, i wasnt big into the huge musclie characters. although id give it another shot seeing as there arent many great co op games around.
Wow, I thought I was the only one who thought this. Yeah this was my same problem when I was playing through the first Gears last year after playing through Uncharted 2. It felt too stiff and clunky moving from cover to cover and moving around in general, also the gray and brown color scheme didn't help either. I recently got the second game and it seemed to click with me better than the first. Other than playing online multiplayer I did my playthrough of the single player on co-op. It's funny how I brought this up with the Gears fans when I asked if I should give the series another chance with the second game and all they did was accuse me of sucking at it because apparently "everybody loves Gears, no one hates it except for fanboys" (note this was on the GT boards). It was okay, but I couldn't really get into it that much. you gotta love people judging old games by current standards.
everyone flipped out for it back in the day because it was great and probably had the most fluid, fast and action filled cover based shooting that had ever been seen at the time.
when i played 3 at my buddys house all i could think was man this game is slow and kinda clunky.
my buddy and i were all "wow, was it always this slow?" the answer is yes it was always this slow it's just that you didn't notice because everything else out was even slower.
that is not so true these days.
not bashing gears at all so dont jump me. Just want to say that a great game stands the test of time. I could play a 10 year old game like cs and its probably still better than most fps out there.you gotta love people judging old games by current standards.

No, you're not alone. when I got my 360 Pro, I rented Gears 1 from GameFly to see what the fuss was all about but I stop after playing about 2 hrs. It's just another generic TPS, was overhyped, overrated.I played it on PC and I could not get past that "hug the wall" gameplay. Sure it was pretty as hell, but the gameplay was just weak.

It's just another generic TPS, was overhyped, overrated. Overhyped & Overrated new ips dont sell millions. I think you got it backwards. They are called overhyped and overrated BECAUSE they sell more than what people think they deserve. e.g. Gran Turismo,I thought it was good but the mediocre campaign was significantly overrated. I was addicted to the multiplayer for some time, though. In fact its still one of my favorite titles of all time multiplayer-wise; a factI find amusing because of the fact that EPIC later admitted they never thoughtthe gamewould really take offand gain a community. The versus component was more an obligatory addition than anything. Anyway, I'd recommend picking up the second and third. Gears 2 has, in my opinion, the best campaign in the series. Its well-paced, and so long as you don't mind the majority of it being underground, its really a lot of fun. It also has the best Horde mode in my opinion, for reasons I don't really want to get into here. Gears 3 is amazing though, good campaign (though certainly overrated) and multiplayer that is literally so good I can't see myself getting into anything else for some time. They're all worth it save for maybe the first now.
