There is a certain level of immersion that is automatically present when your in the first person. This is one of the reasons other genres have become wildly popular as FP games(see Elder Scrolls, Deus Ex and of course, Metroid Prime). What's better than combining the action of a well balanced FPS with a brilliant storyline, well scripted events and cutscenes and intuitive AI, often in a form that can't be emulated by another player(Ridley, Frost Trolls, etc)? In short, although I enjoy mixing it up in games like Halo Reach and Gears online, as well as getting pwned in CS and UT2003:P, there's nothing like playing through an excellent SP FPS experience.

Am I the only one who prefers SP to MP in FPS games?

Um, no? I prefer a nice and long SP campaign myself over multiplayer.

I also prefer LAN for multiplayer. Since LAN support is getting lesser and lesser, so is my multiplayer gaming.

I'm not bothering with any MP in FPS games since they're mostly all the same boring stuff

it depends on the game. and BTW i like my games in third person more. that "better immersion" crap is BS.

^ on those games? sure. but there are many FPS's built around multiplayer, and that really excel at it and provide genuinely fun experiences.

i like it SP if there's a twist. Like Deus Ex - that wouldn't really work as an MP game. Or if there's a decent story. If it's just manshoots then I prefer MP.

I prefer the immersion of single player FPSs as I'm less likely to find a spin-jumping, quick-scoping, bunny-hopper than in multiplayer.

No you're not the only one.

Most of my multiplat FPS are on 360, the rest on my PS3, and I still refuse to pay to play on XBL Gold.

I rarely play on PSN either.

SP all the way in my gaming. I catch s*** for it in the barracks i live in as most soldiers love their madden and cod mp. I dig the stories and settings of games.

both are necessary - quality of SP and MP isn't mutually exclusive. honestly, while i love a good campaign, i wouldn't bother with any FPS that doesn't have MP contents - there's simply no excuse not to deliver a complete package considering how competitive and developed the genre has become.

No you're not, a good FPS campaign can be really immersive and be a lot of fun. I could do without "well scripted events and cutscenes" though.

Single Player BY FAR best part of FPS. SNIPER4321
since you include deus ex, you are missing system shock 1 and/or 2 I think

I heavily prefer single player FPS. Multiplayer often induces shallowness in my opinion.

I couldn't live without FPS games in general, both multiplayer and single player.

I think multiplayer is more necessary to my life though.

For shooters i like sp and coop as long as it´s as addictive as Left 4 Dead series. I prefer a singleplayer RPG over anything else.

Depends I don't like SP on COD games for example, its just too much scripted,"die and retry" and linear for my taste.. and that applies as well for other franchises that copied the style of COD SP like Battlefield. These 2 games are meant for multiplayer, SP is merely fillers. I like a less linear style of SP like Doom 3, Duke Nukem 3D, Half-life, Far Cry, Crysis..They provide secrets and lots of replay value.

Multiplayer. A game like L4D really innovated and turned online mp on it's head

I prefer single player. but I do wish they would put in AI bots so that those who want to play MP but don't want the frustration of everyone else having instakill enabled can do so at their pace; like what Unreal Tournament had.

depends, but i lean more on multiplayer.

Counter-Strike and Quake Arena and Unreal Tournament with friends on LAN i could play for 8 hours straight non-stop.

online multiplayer? hmm...i dunno. playing with strangers isn't as fun as playing with friends.

Personally, campaign co-op for the win. Solo gaming and competitive multiplayer get old after a while - but I'v never gotten tired of co-operative play.

It depends, I honestly think the one or two shot kill type games aren't suited for multiplayer. I prefer to get into prolonged gunfights in multiplayer, not this "who shoots first" nonsense.

Only thing innovative is zombies vs humans and even Perfect Dark did a versus mode like that called Counter Co-op in 2000.

And Perfect Dark, Killzone, Battlefield, Turok, Timesplitters, Tribes, COD:Black Ops, etc. as well.

Really, I think its about the game. Halo and COD, made with multiplayer in mind. Bioshock? I see that as a solitary experience.

Yeah it's fantastic. It has the potential to be even better than L4D imo. Voice acting REALLY needs work though

Fail Ops doesn't have a practice mode against AI bots :?
