...don't matter as much as SW makes them out to be? EDIT: if people would learn to read, this thread is NOT about resolution, hence the edit.

When I say "HD gaming" I'm not talking about the 1080p or resolution or anything like that. I'm talking about higher-end gaming experiences available on 360, PS3, and PC (forgive the fact that some console games aren't HD and let's leave that argument for another thread).

I've played most of 2010's biggest games, yet the ones I've sunk the most hours into were handheld titles. I put a combined 200 hours (at the very least) into MGS: Peace Walker and Valkyria Chronicles II alone. I've put well over 30 hours into Patapon 2 (a 2009 title) and Golden Sun Dark Dawn. There are several lower-end PC and downloadable titles I've put hours into, but the handhelds have dominated my time. One factor is that I don't bother with online gaming (which is much bigger on consoles/PC than on handhelds).

Even starting out 2011, I've beaten Dead Space 2 (twice) and LBP2 (and even made several levels) but both of those games are shelved for a Japanese copy of Monster Hunter 3, and I've already put more hours into MH3 than LBP2 and DS2 combined.

I'm not debating the quality of console vs. handhelds games, per se. I'm just wondering if anyone else has put a disproportionate amount of time into portable games compared to their consoles.

Do you have a decent HD TV? I have a 46 inch TV while not the best there is but it is pretty nice TV and playing games Like Gears of War and even Heavy Rain I know there is a huge difference. If you are playing on a normal TV that would explain why you would think HD is not a big deal.

Only those who have not gamed in HD think it's a waste of money. Once you make the plunge into HD, you never go back.

On a sidenote, how's gaming in 3D? Haven't tried it yet but 3D generally is meh.

handheld gaming really is a thing of the past for me; I enjoyed it a lot more when I was younger, now, not so much.

of course the same can be said about most video games though.

I don't have a handheld, except for the GBA (Golden Sun!). So no, I game enough as it is with only a PS3 and 360. And I'm glad that they're HD, cuz SD games look like crap on my HDTV. If I still had an SDTV I wouldn't mind PS2 games.

Well that is a different topic of games that are all graphics and no gameplay for example I think Killzone is like that. Try playing Gears of War though and you will see it is amazing looking game and also amazing TPS game. As far as consoles I can not think of another TPS with better gameplay but yet it is still pure eye candy.

I hear you, psp and ds titles like dark spire, disgaea 2, peace walker, dq9, strange journey, vc2, y's7 , p3p, class of heroes, no more heores, etc.. and pc indies like eschalon, avernum as well as old games like arx fatalis, arcanum and fallout1 have been given more of my time. Although i have put time into hd games like Civ5, lbp2, me2 and two worlds 2.

I like playing handheld games, but i never have the time. I had a lot of fun with my DS but I sold all my handhelds years ago. I have two very nice HD televisions in my house and i would much rather play games on them rather than staring at a little handheld screen while laying in bed on on the couch.

If you're still gaming on an Xbox 360 you're gaming on 6-7 year old hardware and are massively behind the times compared to PC gamers... That statement is true, but it doesn't make 360 games bad. Just like not being HD doesn't make games bad.

My PC can do HD and don't care either way. Provided the game is good then I play it. Was just playing Blood today at the lowest dosbox setting which is below 800x600 I think.

3D on the ps3 from the 2 games i tried(Motor cross and stardust) wasn't very good but on PC it was very impressive being able to game in 3D at 1080p with the usual high image quality of the pc was amazing the effect it adds to games is very nice Assassins creed II,Team Fortress 2,Left 4 Dead 2, and Dirt 2 in particular looked really nice in 3D the effect is best in first person and third person games. I'm so impressed looking to get a 3D monitor in the future so i can game in 3D while at my desk and not just the 60" in the living room. Can't wait for glassless 3d displays to come out at reasonable prices I'd be willing to pay a $1000 for a 32" glassless 3d t.v.

HD gaming is better hands down on consoles.

With handhelds it's different, I'm not expecting the games to look like a console game and they are usually 30-40 bucks new rather than 60.

It wouldn't hurt, but as far as I know, MH has big emphasis on local co-op play, and on PS3, that might be a little harder to achieve (not sure how Wii approached the problem). And It's a game where taking down a boss can literally take more than an hour. In that case, I would go with portables.

I agree with you, but we are in the minority. I like my ps3/xbox 360 , but because the games are good, not the HD. I still have my Saturn and Genesis hooked and play them quite a bit. I do spend quite a bit of time on my DS and PSP, so I do like new games, I just don't automatically assume the console games will be better than the portables. HD games are great, but I can't buy the argument of never going back to SD games. However, I don't think that is the argument here- this isn't about current gen games being better than previous gen. At least I don't think it is.

When I first got my PS3 3 years ago, I was a man who didn't know much about technology, I was so hyped up about next gen graphics and such. Then I get the PS3 without HDMI, and I was extremely let down. It was fun, but the graphics were terrible (I was playing MGS4 and BC1). Fast forward 1 week, I get an HDMI and holy ********************************************************** it was so, so, so, so, so, so much better (well obviously, I went from 480i - 1080p HD and 720p HD in games since there are barely any console games in 1080p HD). I know way more about technology now, and even my friend who's gamed on a 480i tv, I explained to him the concept of resolution, I plugged in HDMI for him, and while he was playing Uncharted 2 he was blown away. Seriously, HD gaming is amazing, and is nowhere near cheap or bad or worthless.

I'm on the "doesn't matter" side, the grand majority of my time spent playing video games this generation were on handhelds/past generations games. HD consoles just aren't getting a lot of games that I find interesting.

I agree with you TC. I believe that gaming shouldn't be the resolution of one's screen or the graphical prowess of a console. It should be the experience and entertainment of a game.

I've played most this gen on a SDTV & recently bought a HDTV with my new PS3. The difference is pretty noticeable, but I have played on my cousins HDTV before anyway. Games like GoW 3, Gears of War, Uncharted 2 & even CoD really do look amazing in HD, but I much prefer gameplay to graphics & after completing a few of the PS3s exclusives (some amazing, some not so much), I've found myself thinking whether I should trade it in for a 3DS (I use my 360 for multiplats).

Then I remember The Last Guardian, Ico Collection & as far as we know FFvs13 are PS3 exclusive so I won't sell it. Long story short, I agree that while HD is awesome, gameplay is much more important & many handheld games don't have the graphical side to cater too... I need a handheld badly. Fortunately, the 3DS is backwards compatible with the DS so I won't miss out on that back catalogue.

*shakes head* and? whats your point I do love how you add all this stuff, who said the games were bad? It doesn't change the FACT that if your gaming right now in low resolution on computers our not on HD then your missing out on a whole lot. you added nothing to the conversation there because you created context that didn't originally exist.

You do notice the difference and become accustomed to it very quickly. But a game that's fun will be fun on any display.

It only matters on system wars when a game's native resolution on an HD console is below 720p, and only because they can flame the publisher/dev, not because they can actually tell it's below 720p with their eyes.

Lol... and to actually answer the whole handheld vs console thing, I was extrememly disapointed with the DS and PSP. I use to really be into handheld but this gens handhelds singlehandedly convinced me to quit on them. So I've spent almost the entire generation on consoles.

I'm not fond of the terms "HD gaming", it has all sorts of artificial nonsense involved.

For instance the term HD was coined to hype the higher resolutions provided by modern televisions, but the industry has tried to attach some sort of graphical standard to the word, with that standard just happening to fall exactly on current gen console graphics. Never mind anything higher than previous generation televisions is being considered HD these days, there are mobile phones claiming to be HD.

And what happens next gen when graphics progress? Are they going to make up another term to hype spin those particular settings as being a whole new standard; or will they just remain HD? If they are HD, do today's settings stop being HD all the sudden? They use HD to describe current gen graphics, so better than HD cannot be HD can it? HD is divided into HD ready and true HD, consoles are only 720p for the most part; so they are only HD ready. If console HD is just HD ready, what is the graphical standard for true HD?

Where is the point where we realize this is all made up nonsense that was only intended to describe resolutions higher than older televisions?

*shakes head* and? whats your point I do love how you add all this stuff, who said the games were bad? It doesn't change the FACT that if your gaming right now in low resolution on computers our not on HD then your missing out on a whole lot. you added nothing to the conversation there because you created context that didn't originally exist.

WilliamRLBaker

I'm sometimes playing in lower resolution, and i ain't missing ***, except crisper visuals. But that happens extremely rare, i usually play all my games in 1080p, on the PC.

So, here i am, enjoying games, no matter what resolution. I love crisper visuals on 1080p or much above, every human would. But playing in 800x600 or below is not a problem to me. I finished a couple of games like that.

I don't give a **** about any other's opinion about my taste in games or how i play 'em, i am just enjoying my own time.

On the other hand, with your logic, with a console that's ben long outdated since years ago, you would be missing out HUGELY by not getting a 400$ mid-PC that is much above a console.

---------------------------

But that's with your logic. ^ I love playing my SNES, Wii and PS2. On a daily basis. And i love playing on my high end PC rig that i custom made a couple of years ago.

So tell me, dear William, does my existence put a hole in your logic?

Btw., a large percentage of gamers feel the same way as i do. They play what they want to play.

Not what's more 'popular' or 'cool' or some other bull like ya'll children spew about.
