Tell me what games you have played that you felt were amazing but their biggest downside was that they were too easy?

My top 3 are:

1.Eternal Darkness

2.Red Dead Redemption

(somewhat big gap)

--

--

--

3.BioShock 1 (towards the end of the game)

But tell me one important thing - has too low difficulty level ultimately made you lose interest in the game overall? Or have you still enjoyed them greatly despite this flaw? How easy is too easy and how much could you take?

Dishonored, Far Cry 3 (Even patched on Master mode)

There's been more but those are my recent ones. I would say I enjoyed both of them a good amount but once I mastered the gameplay elements I found that there was nothing more for me to do. When death is no longer a fear how fun can a game remain? I think difficulty for me, mostly just attributes to replay value. I'd still rate Dishonored at a 9 and FC3 at an 8.5 despite how easy they become after few hours.

Prince of Persia 2008. Didn't bother me though, not every game needs to be hard. Nice to have a game every now and then that's just easy to enjoy.

The key to increasing Far Cry 3's difficulty is to set up challenges for yourself. Don't activate the towers, don't upgrade pouches, limited perks, no fast travel, etc. Try to keep the theme of survival in mind and it becomes a different experience.

I don't mind a game getting easy towards the end, because it makes me feel as though I made good choices and have become a powerful character. It's satisfying. I felt it especially with Morrowind. I'm feeling it now in Reckoning.

My problem with difficulty curves in games is it's rarely even, and even worse is that it tends to level out near the end of the game. Even with decent stat distribution and equipment selection there should always be a challenge to tackle.

Getting more powerful is fine, but adjusting the enemies you face to take that into account wouldn't be a bad thing.

That could be said for almost any video game.

The 3D Zelda games are all way too easy, sometimes laughably so. I still enjoy them, though.

sports games are the worst for this. I play and enjoy a fair few sports games (fifa, fight night etc) however once you have mastered the mechanics almost all of the challenge and therefore competitive fun elements are removed.

Saying that I love the fight night series, and do play it repeatedly just do enjoy it. Truly some of the most underrated games ever, unfortunately MMA seems to be receiving the majority of video game attention at the moment and its just not as good.

Oh yeah I've done that :P I did an entire play-through with a lot of self imposed limitations, I even posted a short clip on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awLylRggKxM

But still, why not feature a "Survivalist" mode that has all of those things disabled? It wouldn't be hard to do and it would be easier for people to just choose it instead of having to limit themselves and set rules. Also like a "Stealth Purist" mode in Dishonored, just as every game has a casual mode, they should also have a hardcore mode. If games are going to be for "everyone" they really need to be designed with that in mind. I found Splinter Cell Blacklist actually did a fairly good job of this, with the easiest mode being a joke and the hardest mode being pretty challenging (especially ghosting).

Not compared to other hack and slash games. It's all about the lack of saving and losing souls when dying.

With the qualifier that the game has to be "amazing", Super Mario Galaxy. Fantastic game. Total cake walk though.

He's right though. If you could save anytime you wanted it would pretty much eliminate most of the difficulty and cut a bunch of hours off the play time.

I don't think Eternal Darkness was too easy, though I don't think it was hard either. Dependent also on your pick of color in the beginning changed the differculty I felt. Green = Easier but more atmospheric, with having your sanity being quickly drained, than recovering. Blue = Middle Ground, give more unique abilities to mobs and they more focused on more of their magical attacks. Red = Harder, being everything did more damage and had more health. It felt right at its differculty, at least I thought so.

You could do those plus turn off all the training wheels altogether. Also, no minimap:

I find Far Cry 3 outstanding when all visual aids are turned off. Of course, I need to have some of the UI enabled in the campaign. But, in the post-campaign, Reset Outpost mode? Everything is turned off. Nice. This is why almost all other games are falling by the side. I find Far Cry 3 with these settings is very addictive.

Off the top of my head I would say CV:Symphony of the Night. I guess it's normal you are a bit overpowered seeing as you are Dracula's son. Probably my favorite game ever, but I remember wishing it was more difficult, and actually chosing certain items to purposefully make the game harder.

For me, it's important a game be challenging. But, it's a delicate balance not many games are able to achieve....to make it frustratingly hard is no fun at all. You need the game to have exceptional gameplay, so that you are forced to customize your character, use creativity, and every trick in the book to not only finish the game, but get all those awesome hard-to-reach items, etc. Case in point: Dark Souls 1......what an incredible experience...have not played DS2 yet, hoping they will come out with a next gen version....not sure I can stomach past gen graphics for 50+ hours, I still have Lords of Shadow 2 to go through....dillemas dillemas.....:)

You can make Symphony of the night much harder, just don't pick up the health ups.

Or restrict your equipment, like you said. There's some really OP combinations in that game however, still the best metroidvania I've ever played.

Also, I guess I'd say ICO. Amazing game but there's really not much to it difficulty wise aside from wacking at shadows, it's really more of a puzzle, platform, exploration game than straight up combat anyway so it didn't exactly hurt the experience.

Hack n slash games like DMC, NG and God of War have much more difficult gameplay. Some of them actually have puzzles too.

The Uncharted games.

U1 was nicely challenging.

U2 wasnt all that challenging, it was a bit hard on the higher difficulties but not really frustratingly hard.

U3 hardest difficulty wasnt as hard as U2's, but maybe is was do to the fact that i had played the shit out U2 and U3.

The Uncharteds werent too easy, but they werent really all that challenging. The only surivor co-op modes were challenging in U3

Most Zelda games, especially most of the 3D ones. It's still my favorite series, but I'd be lying if I said they were very challenging (although Majora's Mask is still quite tough at times).

The amount of games I consider amazing are very few and most of them do the difficulty just right which I guess is part of why they're amazing.

Good/great games that are too easy though? Most of the Zelda games, most of the FF games, some of the Mario games and damn near every AAA game to come out since last gen.

Also, I guess I'd say ICO. Amazing game but there's really not much to it difficulty wise aside from wacking at shadows, it's really more of a puzzle, platform, exploration game than straight up combat anyway so it didn't exactly hurt the experience.

Yeah, it's funny. ICO and SotC. Both games are easy. Both games are short. Both games feel rough around the edges... yet both games are awesome. I can never pinpoint exactly why I like these two games so much. I guess they just feel refreshing. Like Team ICO developed them in some vacuum outside the rest of the industry.

@ConanTheStoner: The thing about FF games is that they always (or usually) have really tough super bosses. Granted, they're optional but I think they should be taken into account. But I can see why in the case of something like FFVI you'd say the game is too easy. Get a Celestriad (or Economizer depending on the version) and teach a guy Ultima= instant win button. Still a lot of fun, though.

But other ones, like the DS version of FFIV are very challenging. FFIV was the second one I played and it's very tough at times, especially your first time through. I'm sure there are tricks to it, but they aren't immediately obvious like they were in VI.
