Feast your eyes on this 6.2 billion transistor Gaming GPU. It's beating matching or beating nVidia's GTX Titan in most games and the most surprising thing of all it's cost's $549.0 while the Titan cost's $1000. I was expecting AMD to charge at least $650 for it.

Getting almost twice the frame rate of my BIOS flashed HD 6970.

All sold out on Newegg:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=AMD+R9+290X&N=-1&isNodeId=1

Looks like AMD is slowly getting back on it's feet with the release of the fastest single GPU graphics card, along with thier recent $48 mil. profit.

Wow, 94C. That thing needs a way better cooler. Hopefully non-reference coolers can bring the noise and heat down to a reasonable level

That's a good point ron. I was skeptical about the new CEO but slowly he is starting to make some changes. He certainly brought in some talented people like Dr. Lisa Su, Senior Vice President of AMD's Global Business Unit who has a PHD, MS, BS in EE from MIT and she certainly seems very comptent and capable. But I wouldn't get too excited. While the R9 290X is a good launch and the $48 mil is a good start, we will see how AMD does in 2014. Amd has a LOOOONG way to go.

Heat is a price AMD had to pay for its small size. It was to kept the cost to manufacture lower so they could under cut Nvidia. Its price for performance ratio is great.

I am waiting for Nvidia 780ti to start popping up before I think about buying it.

Expensive video cards were never sustainable or a wise investment. $200 to $250 is where the sweet spot lies, and this range will only go lower in the future.

That's what I am looking forward to. We will se how Sapphire, XFX, Asus comes up with custom coolers. Will be looking at the GPU in years down when they come up with better cooler and when the price comes down.

Oh, did I mention that it cost's $100 LESS than GTX 780 and easily trouces it.

This GPU is really hitting all the marks.

Thx to Amd 290x, i cancelled my Ps4 and ordered a gtx 780 that just dropped in price to counter AMD. Best of all i get 3 games included with the graphic card, one of them was Assassins Creed Black flag (other was batman origin/splinter cell )the only Ps4 game i was interested in now when Watch Dogs got delayed.

Why has this thread migrated to SW?

I think we've reached a concensus that it sort of competes with the GTX780, and gets really hot and loud.

Holy crap... Nvidia did dump their prices......

A GTX770 almost costs the same as an R280X.

Which pains me, since I got the 4 GB version of MSI's 770 a month ago :(

Edit:

The MSI GTX770 Gamer 4 GB comes with a backplate btw; I thought some might appreciate such knowledge.

I genarally find that If you go with Nvidia, you're gonna get a working product out the gate. You go with AMD, your product will work, but the drivers will be a bit shoddy for a while, and you may have some overheating problems here and there. I personally went with AMD when I bought my gaming laptop. the AMD 7970m was giving out pretty much the same performance as the the Nvidia GTX 680m, yet cost $300 less. The only problem was that for people without Alienware laptops, who couldnt disable the iGPU, there was a driver issue with Enduro that caused the card to work at something like 50% GPU usage regardless of what game you were playing. In some cases you got terrible FPS (15-25) playing a game like COD4 on low. It was really quite terrible. But after some time they eventually fixed all those problems and it works like a charm now. I personally didnt regret my purchase. Yeah I had to deal with a few issues for a while, but for $300 less, I'm ok with that.

Would've probably still have gotten the 770, but it still sucks that it's almost 20% cheaper now.

Luckily I did'nt pay for it as much as I got paid with it ;)

I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but the 290x is only faster than the Titan when both GPUs are running at stock speeds. The 290x isn't much of an overclocker, whereas the Titan or 780 can be overclocked pretty well; the 780/Titan (GK110) performs better than the 290x when the GPUs have been overclocked (and who the hell doesn't overclock a GPU?).

Seems like it also loses performance in prolonged gaming sessions because it clocks itself according to temerature, just like GPU Boost 2.0 on Geforce cards.

Uh...if it weren't for technological progress we would be stuck in the stoneage.

And...did I mention that nVidia dropped the prices of their GPU's by $150 thanks to this GPU, which is a win-win for consumers. This wouldn't have happened if AMD didn't release the R9 290X

Yeah whoopty doo...

So, Tom's Hardware gave the R9 290X Elite Award. No other GPU's in the history of GPU's ever got this award.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-r9-290x-hawaii-review,3650-35.html

I wouldn't blame them considering that it easily beat's the GTX 780 and matches or beat's the Titan that cost's $450 more.

And at 4K the Titan doesn't even win any benchmarks. The R9 290X is all over it.

Might get a new GPU instead of a PS4 this year. But it seems my 4 year old 620W PSU would be an edge case for this particular one. I just wanna plop a card in and make things go better. :\

Wow, AMD's cpu needs to be overclocked for it to be on par with the stock speed of an i5 haswell cpu. Lol, looks like AMD was optimized for watercoolers. I could see why Microsoft chose AMD to be their next watercooler. ;)

You might as well get to it, 780 is about to receive a price cut:

If I could find the MSI Lightning edition somewhere for a similar price, would pick it up immediately, and OC the crap out of it... but Lightnings are pretty hard to come by around here...
