AMD to Intel: This is what quad-core is all about

4 individual cores as apposed to Intel's core 2 duo (2 dual core chips stuck together)

it should be much faster then the core 2 duo.  Link:

AMD will also be releasing  an octo-core platform, called "FASN8"

and AMDs chip comes out much sooner.

I used to be an AMD gamer.....

But at this point....Core 2 Duo is by far the best you will get for the money at hand.....Its just incredible how cheap they are...yet can max out any game no problem.

Why report on this? PC hardware only stays current for a few weeks anyway lol.

Nice processor though.

And then a few months later, Intel will release a processor that will best AMD's fastest.

It's like a game of leapfrog.

There will likely be a 5 to 6 month period before Intel will releas a chip to match it let alone out perform it.

Nice. Hopefully this will drive some of the CPU prices and I can buy me an Intel Core 2 Duo.

I still think it'd be faster than the AMD 4 core.  I just wish the chip makers would work on making faster chips, not just cramming more onto one die.

they're not going to be faster than any of the real quad-core stuff coming later on from both AMD and Intel. the 2x4-core stuff is actually pretty horribly ineffecient at scaling up for 8 cores compared to 4... somewhat similar to amd's 2x2 setup sucking. but yeah, the amd quad-core seems set to be about even or maybe better than intel's quad-core evolution in the fall of this year. edit: and yeah, they ran into a wall a couple years ago with just making chips faster. it's why they have this sudden migration towards multiple cores to do the work, because it suddenly got very very hard to make processors any faster than they are today. the core 2 duos are pretty much the same design as the pentium M's that have been around since 2002, which are themselves heavily based off the pentium 3.

No, they can always go faster, the problem lies within keeping the chip cool, that is horribly expensive and hard to do. IBM has cell runing at 5 or 6GHz. Faster is not the way to go, I don't know of any single application that can put pressure on a C2D processor clocked at 3Ghz so to make it faster would be pointless. Instead they make it where you can do more at once as well as very fast. That is the whole theory with multicore CPUs, GO BROAD OR GO HOME!

Quite possibly the first game to take full advantage of that technology will be Crysis.

No Crysis was maxed out on 1600p at 60fps on a sigle core CPU...

The only game that comes to my mind is M2TW which needs an insane processor for the calculation of 144k troops' morale/fatigue/attack/defence/AI/experience/ground angle/shield angle of each one of them...

Yep but they have to release them anyway otherwise we would be still using 386's.

Um CPU's have majpr changes every 3 years or so. Not every 12-18 months with 6 moth refreshes like video cards. New CPU archetechure is big news.

good cuz my M-Board only accepts AMD, hoepfully it fits into a AM2 slotR-Dot-Yung

it does, however it will not be able to utilize cetain features, such as faster Hyper Transport support, on current motherboards

Yep accept core 2 quads are fake quad core. They are just two dual cores in the same socket. So its really 4 dual core CPU's.

meh. the top of the line cpus don't really bring much to gaming since it's always GPU limited.

Still unparralelled in the performance area, especially something like video editing/rendering & gaming. With Intel's C2D chips you have to push them to get the best performance out of them. Like how E6600 outperformed QX6700 in some benchmarks.. Theres not really many apps that require 4 cores which leaves major ammounts of its power untapped.

clock speed shmock shpeed...my clock runs at 2.2GHz by default...I OC'd it to 2.8GHz(I have a water cooling kit) its all about cache and cores...and the Core2Duo's do rock but AMD has been better for awhile now IMO

it took intel 3 years to beat the athlon 64, if amd can get the perormnace crown back in 1 year thats a big hit to intel

Its codenamed Barcelona and is the K8L the media was reporting on earlier.  Its simply a k8 core with many small optimizations that add up.  It will Not be faster then Core 2's though.
